2 yellows in 1 game = red card (miss next group match)
red card in group stage= miss next group match..

if you get a red in the last game of your group it doesn't rollover to the round of 16..

If Onyewu had gotten a yellow today he would have had to miss the game againt ghana beacuse he got his first yellow against the czech...

any questions?

and that had to be the worst fucking ref I have ever seen in world cup history..

wow, unbelievable. that game was absolutely nuts.

the ref got suspended before so i guess they decided to give him a second chance... good f'n idea!!! certainly made the game ridiculous. i loved bruce arena on the replay you could see him yelling fuck you and fucking impossible.

so now us has to beat ghana obviously AND italy has to beat czech, bc if italy loses, then czech goes thru in first, and then usa (assuming win against ghana) will be 1-1-1 and italy will be 1-1-1 and it will go down to goal differential.. and right now that favors italy... unless usa pummels ghana. so best bet is a win for italy, so now gotta cheer for the azzurri

I love when that happens in sports. One day, you're cheering your brains out against one team (like Italy today) and the next game you're cheering FOR them.

Go Italy!!

Im not so familiar with the rules of soccer, what did McBride do wrong when Beasley kicked the ball in the goal somewhere in the 70th minute or so? It wasnt offsides was it?

thought the first 10 min of the US/Italy game was good, as well as the last 5 min. Otherwise I thought both teams looked flat. Italy didnt seem to into the game at times. And good god, that ref was very inconsistent. I hope he gets shot

yea technically it was offsides, its like "obstruction" i think is the technical term or something, when youre behind the last defender but blocking the goalies view during a shot, bc it wasnt a pass.

He would not have been offsides if he was not involved in the play. Even though he didnt directly make contact with the ball, his position was one where he was considered apart of the play. If he was over by the corner flag in a clear offsides position the ref would not have called him offsides as he had nothing to do with where the ball was, etc.

edit: i meant to quote h20-pr00f but i'm too lazy to change it.

At least the U.S. showed some life today. They actually looked like they belonged in this tournament. Good energy and plenty of scoring chances and Keller was on. Night and day from the first match.

I thought we had them when Beasley netted that ball, but the goddamn ref took it away. The officiating in this game was awful. Several yellow cards that shouldn't have been called.

We really needed to win today, but let's get Ghana and cheer for Italy! This is really a great event.

Kudos to the americans for stepping it up. That was one crazy game. Now every team in this division has a chance to advance, which should make the games pretty exciting. I think to advance the US needs to beat Ghana and Italy needs to beat the czechs?

What about Ghana today. Holy crap they looked good!

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany -- When the referee finally blew his whistle, when the emotional roller coaster of a soccer game finally came to a screeching halt, all Landon Donovan could do was lay there.

His body was numb. His emotions conflicted. Smack in the middle of the field at Fritz-Walter Stadium, with chants of "USA, USA," echoing from all around, he tried to make sense of what had just taken place on the field before him.

"I guess it's bittersweet," he said. "You want to win the game. But at the same time, we gave everything we had. I mean ... everything ... we ... had."

When he made his way to the locker room, Donovan would need an IV to replenish his fluids. Not far away, three stitches held together the gash on Brian McBride's left cheek. And Jimmy Conrad walked through the postgame interview scrum with a chunk of gauze poking out of his nose. And those were only the bumps and bruises that were visible. In a physically exhausting match with 37 fouls, four cautions and three expulsions, there assuredly was more.

But at least for a while Saturday night, no one on the U.S. could feel the pain. Despite losing two players to red cards in a span of two minutes, despite playing a man down for almost the entire second half, the Americans tied Italy 1-1 Saturday, keeping their hopes for advancing to the next round healthy and alive.

"These guys bled for our country and our team tonight," goalkeeper Kasey Keller said afterward. "Today was about the team."

Yes it was offside. A player can be in an offside position and the goal will count as long as that offside player has no impact or interference on the play.

So in the case today, McBride was clearly offside and also tried to deflect the ball. If he just left it and stayed away the goal would have counted.

I didnt think Donovan stood out this game at all. I was often questioning why he was kept in the entire game. I still think he is overrated

I thought it was cause he was obstructing the view of the goalie while offside, but thats just what the announcer said so who knows if thats right...

exactly. so he interfered with the play while in an offside position.

If he was onside the goal would have counted, or f he was offside but didnt try and interfere with the goal it would have counted.

Even if he didnt try to interfere, he would have been off. His position was one that was involved in the play, even if he didnt move. If he was by the corner flag, for example, it would have been a goal.

I agree to a certain extent. I think he was a presence in the game today, but he needs to step it up even more. They HAVE to beat Ghana.

Oh yeah, he stepped it up this game over the last. I think the team/media has hyped this shit out of him so people expect more. I think he has talent but doesnt deserve the attention he gets.

Possibly. He was standing so close to the goalie that the ref/lineman may have considered that he was involved in the play regardless or if he tried to interfere of not.

But I just wanted to clarify the rules - i.e. a player can be in an offside position as long as he is not considered to be involved in the play. In this case he was involved so it was an offside call. (not obstruction)

I think he tried to deflect the ball, but even if he didnt, simply screening the goalie is enough to consider him "in play". Hence the offside call.

Correct. It really boils down to the ref's discretion. Offsides is a pain in the ass to figure out in certain cases. I've had ref's even debate whether the forward can be even with the last defender or whether they have to be one step behind. I dont know if FIFA has further defined the offsides rule since I last read them but I'm sure the debate is still there.

^-cool, it seems i've always had the most trouble (as a player and a ref) with the offsides rule by way of a universal understanding as its discretion affects the game the most.

Speaking of offsides, how about that Ghana player who was standing right in front of the goalie, and then passing the ball to his teammate, who was clearly in an offside position instead of finishing it off himself. That was a dumb move.

Dumb move??? how about kicking the penalty without the ref consent then getting a yellow card which means he is not going to be in the next game . AND then KICKING THE PENALTY AGAIN AND MISS IT . Ghana has a lot of good players but they are not very intelligent .

I dunno, no goals, but he definitely played very well. He had a few nice runs, and some great setups. One player can only do so much.

Speaking of, found this this morning. I know some of these have been posted but thought this one was entertaining. Gets really interesting at about 1:40 in
