Since the trunk is full, it made for a claustrophobic ride home

Having had an AP2 originally, if an AP1 had popped up in good condition for the right price first...I'd have jumped on it. There's something very pure about the AP1.

Wonder how much it costs to ship a car across the country...

I can't get over the 'older car = badder' stigma even though this AP1 is 30K.. I'd still want an AP2 for the purposes of age.

I'm crazy. or just need to do more research

I prefer the aesthetics of the AP2, however, I can't imagine that I would be worried about looks when the tach hits 9k

$1000-$1500 to ship w/ an "open" trailer.

$1500-$2000 for enclosed.

It really depends on distance, my mom shipped her AP2 from New Jersey to CA (enclosed) for $1800.

Aesthetically, I like the AP2 more. Wheels / headlights / taillights / both bumpers =

Mechanically, I'd take an AP2 just for the stronger valve retainers and added torque.

AP1 is more raw, AP2 is more refined and got more refined as time went on. Many people love the AP1 because of it's raw and uncompromising characteristics. I preferred the AP2 because it is more refined.

If you're seriously interested, I'd be happy to check this one out for you in person and report back.

Agreed with the first part. You can upgrade the valve retainers in the F20 engine if there's ever an issue. I'm guessing the issues aren't overly prevalent anyway. The biggest cause of failure is mechanically over-revving the engine which is what causes them to fail. As long as you are good at driving a manual, you'll be fine. You can keep an eye on them and replace when necessary though.

Get what you like. Drive both and figure out which speaks to you more. The AP1 and AP2 have slightly different characters in how they drive so find out what you like more and get that. Don't worry about older cars or valve retainers, the F2X engine in the S2000 is rock solid for hundreds of thousands of miles unless abused.

tl;dr, figure out which you like, find the lowest mileage best condition one you can afford and buy that.

In addition to what ^ said about AP2,

Ap2 also has better stock shocks, wider tires, bigger interior space.

basically AP2 is perfect except i only wish it had a little higher RPM... i always thought 8.3k redline was not enough

saying AP2 is refined misleading, it is still more raw than pretty much anything else out there (Except for Elise).

AP2 is more livable than Ap1 is more accurate.

Great summations from both yall. Thanks! yeah I definitely need to at least sit in one, I've never even done that. I also wouldn't call myself a great stick driver... Probably going to need to practice some more before getting an S.

Thanks for the offer to check it out Sam but I'll pass on it for now. Not ready financially yet. Need to sell an older car first then I'll seriously start looking

Been seeing a lot of nice S2000's in San Diego lately and it's really making me start to regret selling mine again. It's been ~3 years and I still can't fully get over that car, lol. I'm highly considering selling both the G and the GSXR to pick up an AP2 and throw a Kraftwerks Supercharger kit on it! 400+whp S2000? Count me in!!!

Edit: The G alone plus a little extra cash would probably be enough for the build posted above, but I feel like I wouldn't ride my bike at all if I owned a boosted S2000. It's 95% the same thing/fun level of a bike.. and safer to boot. Haha

Agreed, that's a good way to state it. AP2 is definitely more raw than anything on the market today (elise is NLA in the US )

FWIW, you can get the AP2 to rev higher. Just need the ECU from a 00-01 AP1 or AEM ECU. The Hondata flash for the 06+ cars raises redline to 8500 as well.

I wouldn't do it, but it's possible.

No worries, if I can help let me know. Finding a clean S is frustrating.

IMO, 400+hp in a S2000 ruins the car and the way it was made to work.

04/05 were the most trouble-free according to billman, but not easily tunable since throttle cable and not drive by wire.

04-05 is the best.... No traction control FTW.

the seats are also much better looking than the leatherette look alike 06+ ones.

Still blows my mind that people want to tune the engine for more power out of this thing. I'd wager that the reason most of them aren't getting the best lap times is not because the car isn't powerful enough.

The only reason I'd want to get a tune is to get the VTEC to hit earlier. That's it.

They changed the seat material in the later cars? The leather in the one I have is fantastic.

Yes they did.

I had a 05 and a 07. The seats in the 05 were much better in looks and material. I seriously think the outer area of the 06+ seats are leatherette. It looked like it and it felt like it.

See pix below

which is what leatherette looks and feels like.

I had the leatherette in my F30... the texture and the feel is very similar to the 06+ s2000 seats.

Agreed, the S2000 is a momentum racer and most people can't get the most out of the power given from factory (myself included). My Intake & exhaust didn't help my first track day & AutoX session, tires & dialed-in suspension (coils & sways) would have gone a lot further if I was looking at lowering my lap times.

Although, not all drivers track their cars - not everybody has the same goals and priorities (this thread is a great example of that)

As a young tot, I was obsessive with seeing a creation unfold; Drawings, LEGO sets, K'NEX sets .. even as far as Gran Turismo car modification , etc. It was always the drive to make adjustments & minor tweaks to get further enjoyment out of what you have.

And here we are today - cars have had my attention for a solid 8 years or so. I like to fiddle & modify cars because I genuinely enjoy the process (except for spending the $ ) Unwrapping the boxes, reading the instructions, the installation, and reaping the benefits.

Not all drivers are the same, but that's the beauty of this thread. We all have 1 thing in common, we love cars & we love to drive.

/end rant.
