never heard of that being the case, my understanding is that it is a unique engine and was only used in the CGT.

Drag races are so predictable. I'm sure the Tesla needed new tires immediately after.

No relation. Engine derives from a modified 3.5-liter motor Porsche built for Formula 1 back in the early 90' to go into the original race before that project was scrapped. That engine though, made it in the concept CGT before the production motors were detuned.

It could if Akio really wanted to explore it since part of his goal is to inject more sporty cars into the brand; hence why we even have RCFs racing in IMSA now. But, I imagine with the brand still being luxury first, something like the M4 GTS wouldn't fly. Besides, for what we do produce, it has been seen as underwhelming compared to the competition (outside the LC). The next gen. RCF/GSF need a bit more kick & refinement before tackling something like a RCF GTS.

Cool idea, just don't think we have the brand image to push it.

Yah i agree. That is why i said it was not going to happen.

Before any of those GTS stuff, Lexus needs to do something to make their cars really compete with Germans. They came very very close... but seems Germans are pulling away in recent years.
Unlike Acura, Lexus/Toyota has the balls and the hardware to make it happen, it s just a matter of time.

I can tell you everything wrong with the RCF.

1. It looks like a 4x4 when it's not supposed to, a bloated one at that. It needs to use sleek panels and shapes to create a somewhat sleek car. Think M3 or S5 etc. And drop it a couple inches.
2. The name sucks. Nobody of consequence is going to get behind a car named "RCF". It needs to be a sexy name that flows off the tongue with ease. LFA. Lexus knows how to do it, they just aren't thinking well. Chalk this up under bad marketing / development.

Those are the main things. Fix these and the car will do well.

Also they need to make RCF more stand out from RC-F 2.0T.

Unless i am looking at the exhaust, otherwise i cant really tell the difference between a 2.0T F sport and RCF.

Perhaps we can add that it's a heavy beast and that its structure was created by mashing two legacy bodies together to make a coupe. That makes for bad dynamics.

The name came from the IS F seeing as that's what started the trend with the marque. The LFA's name is just a case of coincidence. It was under Lexus' policy of all concepts being LF- & two letters. Tanahashi could not decide on two letters, so he simply went with an "A". Years later, they needed a real name, so he decided to just remove the dash.

The biggest issue with the RC F is the use of a convertible sub-frame in the middle. It added unnecessary weight because they planned to make a convertible out of the car. Beyond a couple concepts, that seems like a pipe dream now as they focus on the upcoming new TT V8, LC F, GX update, GS successor, & now, a LS F supposedly.

They need to focus on the GS-F, ISF and RCF or maybe even a RX-F (since SUV is the new king) ... not the LSF.... how many LSF are they planning to sell...

But they wont listen to us anyway haha.

RX is getting a 3rd row, extended wheelbase in Feb. Lexus has done a solid job keeping performance SUVs out of its market, and letting the RX do what it does best.

They don't sell very many LS Hybrids either, but they keep building them as well.
A LS F could be a decent platform depending if its performance is up to par for the price. The new LS will start at $75,000, just $2,500 over a current model and isn't expect to exceed $100,000 fully loaded. I would assume LS F to sit around $120,000. 4.5 seconds to 60 is what Lexus claims the upcoming car can do, so if the LS F comes with a TT V8 (hopefully boasting more than the standard 467Hp), it could be around 4 seconds flat. That'd be very quick for a big luxury sedan & put just behind the B7 & S63 AMG which would be in a pricing bracket above it.

As said, the RC was originally planned with a convertible in mind; the middle sub-frame is a IS-C. But, it's yet to come to fruition.

I'm ok with ISF - that works. the "RC" doesn't. The name is very important for these matters and can alter public perception in subconscious ways that might not even be measurable - yet the larger effect can be noticed....

I actually didn't know that about the convertible sub-frame - but that explains a lot. You start with that, you're gonna have that unnecessary bloat. It sounds like they're gonna have to go back to the drawing board and start from scratch if they truly want to make something the public will eat up. I have started designing cars again, after taking a.... 25 year (?) break. Perhaps I will try designing my vision of the next such Lexus.

2018 Camry rental this week.

Put 300 hp in this thing and it's still a boring pig of a car. There is nothing exceptional about it.

I suppose. The RC isn't one of our big sellers; you could be on to a reason why. I agree that they need to go back & start from scratch on that as well. Because of that weight, the car performs the exact same as the GS, yet the 4-door is typically, a more fun car to drive because of how they set it up. For me, it's no wonder the GS F was met with praise unlike the RC F & that's ignoring it being compared to the Germans. It feels more engaging, it sounds a little more menacing, it's just a perfect daily driver for someone who wants performance and needs cargo room. Not that the RC F is bad but considering the financial trade offs (RC Fs are cheaper, but hold higher residuals) I'd still side with the saloon.

With the TT V8 expected to be their power plant in the coming years, it'll be interesting to see if they swap the engine or design an entirely new RC generation to showcase it. The GS successor is rumored to take more of a BMW Gran Turismo style as an alternative to the reports that the model would be axed (due to the next gen. ES taking the styling as a smaller LS & thus, leaving the GS in an awkward position). We'll see if the TT V8 debuts it in as well.

This the closest we've gotten in 2014 right when the RC line started production. Lexus shared a photo of it on IG back in July & a couple outlets have touted it as 2019 model, but we haven't heard a peep about it. At one point a year or so ago, it nearly got shelved as Lexus wanted more SUVs. The story goes that the engineers were not happy with the change after the time spent on the RC preparing for this car, so they backed off. Of course, here we are now and no convertible or news of one to speak. Instead, we are back to the 3rd row RX & another "SUV" under the NX.
