true or false?
a 35mm at f1.4 is sharper than a 70-200 at 2.8

I think it depends on how good of copy a 35mm 1.4 is. I've used the 35L and it was extremely sharp at 1.4. It would be close.

Probably also depends on what version of 70-200 2.8 you're talking about.

But generally a prime is sharper wide open than a zoom wide open. IIRC.

I didn't know if it was canon specific though. Their 70-200 2.8 IS II is a definitely sharper than the first version.

I haven't used the II, but IMO the 70-200 4.0 IS is their sharpest of those lenses.

Define "definitely" sharper? I have a good friend who had both and did some extensive tests. He eventually sold his Version I but honestly felt that Version II was "worth" the upgrade. I think he posted a very comprehensive review on his blog, let me see if I can find it.

I guess I should say from the tests I've seen version II was sharper at 2.8 than the previous version. The new IS system is also an big improvement over version I.

I don't think I would upgrade my 70-200 2.8 IS to the version II anytime soon though. It's working just fine for me.

How much would you charge?

So a friend has a potential opportunity to shoot a firefighter calendar. It is a relatively small fund-raising calendar with a distribution of only around 1500 copies. It would involve shoots at about 3 different locations (25km radius) with the intent of providing about 30 images to be processed, then they select 12 for print and publish.

She doesn't want to lowball, but wants to be reasonable.

I donate my time to fundraisers for organizations that I like to support. I'm not a proponent of giving things away to publications, but a firefighter calendar for local fundraising? I'd donate my time. If it were to be sold nationally at retail chains by a publisher, that's another story..

Firefighter calendar? Sounds gay as hell. I would charge double the going rate because of this.

speaking of possibly ghey scenarios... yesterday i got invited to shoot a bachelorette party night.. 8-10 girls. "Obviously we would escort you every where with us and take care of your drinks." this could go good or bad, lol. usually strippers don't allow professional photos (or even regular photos) so I think it might be OK. And they are ending the night at a cabaret type of show, so I think overall it could be... fun!

yeah agreed, if its for any type of fund-raising for causes I like to support, I have the attitude that I am donating my services and photos for the cause. and have done this on a few occasions in the past, with success. I think of it as, they would need to go into the funds they raised for that event, to pay me. and that just doesn't sound 'right'.
