from my understanding, the only noticeable difference is going to be ads. everything else should technically be the same.

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
I think he's talking about stats, not view counts/photo.
Stats still seems to be Pro only.
I think I'll create a fake account and try to set up an API key for that account - if I can pull stats data through the API without paying, I may downgrade (assuming AdBlock can block the ads).

Is there ANY way to customize the page?
No offense to my friends, but I dont want 75% of the landing page to be your giant pictures, no matter how nice they are...

30 pages of just one petition to get flickr to fix this mess... http://www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-...708919/page30/
Not going to do a damn thing, but one user summed it up me thinks...
"Flickr, you just committed suicide"
I am still unclear on any monthly upload (300MB?) or display limitations (last 200 images?) if I switch to a free account.

Many peeps switching to ipernity or 500px.
ipernity is quickly developing a bulk transfer script to move mass amounts of images from flickr to their site.
Anyone on 500px know how many sets I can create with a free account?

So, based on the use/philosophy of the CEO, I don't think this is going to get any better...
Here is her iphone drivel photostream of a whopping 19 crappy images.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/marissamayer/
The comments on the photos are great though.![rofl](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/rofl.gif)
This is just going to be another place for 15 year olds to upload their 95 stupid cell phone pics of "Peace Sign Ducky Face" that no one cares about so that Yahoo can feed them ads for crap.

My landing page is 75% consumed by pictures from my contacts...
Why the hell would I want their pictures so prominent? I liked seeing the strip of them, but in proportion to the other stuff I was able to see.
Here is a screen shot of my landing page... (Rubin, you hog...!)
I mean, they are nice photos, but they take up the WHOLE page!

Even my home page (/username) feels cluttered and claustrophobic.

I seriously only saw it for the first time today - if I want to look at my contacts photos I click on contacts -> recent photos. and that screen is just like how it was before.

The old Free accounts were limited in a few ways though:
1. MB upload PER MONTH was capped at 300MB (would take a LONG time to fill 1TB!)
2. Number of visible photos was limited to the last 200 uploaded
3. I think you were capped at a certain number of collections
I am hoping they clarify these three issues soon with respect to the new Free accounts.

I wish I could make it so that the "landing" only shows photos of people that I've actually added to MY contacts. But right now, it's random from people that added me (for whatever reason) as well as the people that I personally added. I don't want to sound cocky, but to me, just because someone added me because they want to follow my uploads, that doesn't mean I have any interests in THEIR stuff. If someone added me, and I never added them, I don't see why they consider that a "contact" ![Dunno](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/dunno.gif)

The only thing I really dislike it that it tells me when people comment on such and such. Don't care!!
Other than that I like the bigger photos of contacts, ect. I really don't see why people hate it so much.

It used to be a simple, clean interface that allowed for great customization and organization. Much of that has been turned on it's ear.

so Petapixel raised more than a few eyebrows with this thing they posted yesterday about there no longer being such a thing as a 'professional photographer'... so here is the followup including clarification from Marissa mayer.

13 Traits That Make a Photographer “Professional”
![](http://cdn.petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2013/05/professional.jpg)
This appears to be a big week for Yahoo! with their $1 billion Tumblr acquisition announcement followed by a number of changes to their Flickr service. Exciting stuff in the tech world. However, amid the Yahoo! hoopla, CEO Marissa Mayer managed to insult the entire professional photography community with her comments, being widely interpreted as “there’s no such thing as professional photographers” anymore.
Oops. Now, we’ve all been in a position where an off-the-cuff comment doesn’t come out as intended, fair enough. But this one continues to sit poorly with me. Here’s the actual quote, in context:
![](http://cdn.petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2013/05/photogs1.jpg)
We can all apply lovely filters and share our images via websites, social networks, contests, and even on any number of corporate “communities” where brands may showcase user generated photos. But let’s be very clear… NONE of these tools makes us anything close to “professional” and the role of the real professional photographer is very much alive and in demand.
I’ve had the good fortune of surrounding myself with professional photographers for several years. And from them, I’ve learned that there are more than a handful of traits that define a professional photographer. So, for Marissa Mayer and anyone else who may feel that there’s “no such thing” as a professional photographer anymore, I submit the following list.
A professional photographer…
Filters, “likes”, and terabytes of storage don’t make any of us any more “professional”. Being a professional is about how photographers conduct themselves while carrying out their projects and serving their clients. These are skills that are learned and honed, and those who excel at it deserve our respect.
Please don’t hesitate to add to this list, I’m sure I’ve missed more than a few.

P.S. As of this afternoon, Marissa Mayer has issued a clarification via Twitter. And, I continue to stand by items 1-13, above.

About the author: Andrew Fingerman is the CEO of PhotoShelter. This article originally appeared here.

…there’s no such thing as Flickr Pro, because today, with cameras as pervasive as they are, there is no such thing really as professional photographers, when there’s everything is professional photographers [sic]. Certainly there is varying levels of skills, but we didn’t want to have a Flickr Pro anymore, we wanted everyone to have professional quality photos, space, and sharing.
OK, so we are all now “photographers” thanks to the fact that a camera is always with us. Sure, I buy that. I’ve taken more than a handful of good photos with help from my inexpensive DSLR and a few good lenses. And, I’m as guilty as everyone else when it comes to Instagramming my kids and my dinner (only the stuff I cook, mind you).![](http://cdn.petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2013/05/photogs1.jpg)

So, for Marissa Mayer and anyone else who may feel that there’s “no such thing” as a professional photographer anymore, I submit the following list.
A professional photographer…
- Approaches a project in a manner that shows respect for both the subject and the client’s goal.
- Works with a client to achieve that goal under specific budget constraints.
- Delivers the end result, as agreed upon, on time and in a manner that shows the client’s most critical needs are understood.
- Finds ways to make a client’s life easier from the beginning of a project to the end, including saving them time and making them look like a hero.
- Is prepared to face any problem with a creative solution, from the most dire to the off-the-wall.
- Takes criticism and adjusts (quickly) in order to get the job done.
- Can completely pivot among all kinds of changing circumstances.
- Presents, negotiates, agrees, executes, invoices, and follows up with consistency and personal pride.
- Knows how to pitch and market oneself with accuracy so the promised service is what’s delivered.
- Researches the subject of a story and contributes insights and vision that make the end result better.
- Builds rapport with a subject in a way that gains unique access, makes them more comfortable, or exposes their personality.
- Keeps one’s composure while dodging bombs, borders, and mobs, linebackers and foul balls, sharks, elephants, horses, and bees, roadies, divas, tornadoes, and brides and any other incoming threats or obstacles, and still gets the job done.
Filters, “likes”, and terabytes of storage don’t make any of us any more “professional”. Being a professional is about how photographers conduct themselves while carrying out their projects and serving their clients. These are skills that are learned and honed, and those who excel at it deserve our respect.

Marissa Mayer Sorry for “Misstatement” on Professional Photographers
![](http://cdn.petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2013/05/mayer1.jpg)
- Eric Calouro · May 22, 2013
![](http://cdn.petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2013/05/mayer1.jpg)
Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer found herself in the spotlight earlier this week following a controversial statement made at Flickr’s NYC press event regarding pro photographers:
There’s no such thing as Flickr Pro today because [with so many people taking photographs] there’s really no such thing as professional photographers anymore.
Photographer Zack Arias took offense to the comment, and before long, a number of publications picked up the story, sparking discussion and debate on the matter. Some users even took to Mayer’s Flickr page to voice their opinions.
But according to Mayer, the comment was taken out of context. She’s taken to Twitter to explain her remarks to outraged and confused users, stating that she “worded [her] answer terribly”.
Mayer says her “misstatement” was related to the terabyte of storage now available on Flickr and how many photos users are taking. In other words, Mayer is suggesting there isn’t quite the need for a Pro account given the tremendous amount of storage space now available to all users.
Mayer is also using her Twitter account to apologize for the confusion, and it looks like the community is taking kindly to her outreach. Certainly, it’s understandable how a comment can be taken out of context, and this being the Internet, it can easily can be stirred into a controversy very quickly.

^^ that is hilarious
as much as people are hating on the new Flickr, I can't. I've had above and beyond noticeably more views than ever before. The day of the change, I had 12k views. Day after, 10k. And I didn't change anything I was doing. I usually averaged around 2k views a day prior to that.

I'm seeing only slightly higher Stream views. Photo views are relatively flat except for one or two photos that spike up every once in a while, but those hits never come from flickr.

A user mentioned as a comment to an article about the change (and I see his point):
I never would've compared the old Flickr to a gallery space but I think now it's an apt analogy.
Ever see walls of a gallery completely filled with images? No - they have their own space and breathing room. This is Google Images. Did the developers develop a case of horror vacui?
And you realize the justified photostream randomly and arbitrarily resizes and emphasizes your photographs. I had three square photos from the same camera on the same day and they come out on three rows in three different sizes. What could the point of that possibly be?
Ever see a gallery where you have to ask to read descriptions, or rollover a spot to make them appear? No, they're there, right next to the piece.
Ever see a gallery with black walls? Why the obsession with black backgrounds?? Most photography is presented on white walls with white mats. Black was never the default until photo sharing sites decided they looked better on smartphones.

I have all the original images locally stored, but not necessarily the exact sets and organization I ave on Flickr.
