It's funny what pics get the attention while others sit dormant. This is my most viewed photo with 16,191 views!
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/acurazinedan/224149616/" title="Vibrant Flower 1600x1200 Wallpaper by AcuraZine Dan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/79/224149616_e11c507434_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="Vibrant Flower 1600x1200 Wallpaper" /></a>

I didn't think much of it when I took it. I was using a Sigma 24-70 at the time, which isn't your typical "I'm going to take photos of flowers" lens. But people liked it. I uploaded it as a 1600x1200 wallpaper and I think it got indexed on Yahoo somewhere.

This may help a bunch of you guys to view your raw images as thumbnails and in windows preview.
http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

I know i've downloaded the one for xp and worked for vista but the 64bit didn't work for win 7 so i just gave these codecs a try and they work like a charm!

They are free but i'm thinking of donating a bit for releasing the codec.

Hello Gurus,

I have 1592x688 photo of the Grand Canyon and I would like to make it into 6 separate 8X10 photos. Is this even possible, or would it be too pixelated when blown up? Can something like this be done in CS4, or should I take it a photo shop?

The photo I got from my sis, and I want to do this as a gift for her.

Main brain is super slow today and I can't think of the proper google search terms.

Thanks in advance!

That would be stretching it even for one 8x10.

A typical print resolution for an 8x10 is 1920x2400 and up. You should be looking for a file that's 5760x2400 if you want to print 24x10. A 300% blowup of your original will probably look a little rough. If you'd like to try though, shoot me a PM and I'll run it through Genuine Fractals or BlowUp to see what it looks like.

Google rasterbator...

It will pixelate it, but in an artsy fartsy kinda way.

Thanks. I'll shoot you a pm later. I want to make sure that she sent me the pick strait from the camera. The one I have is only 577kb--that doesn't seen right.

JLatimer- checking out the rasterbator right now. thanks

I use http://www.lensrentals.com/ Most of their lenses are always in stock. Their customer service is top notch also.

to elaborate a little on the "camera doing everything for you" thing I mentioned in the 7D thread...

I remember back when my dad got his N8008 (right when it came out), he never used the AF. Why? Because he didn't feel any reason to. He saw it more as, a waste of battery life. I'm not a camera historian but I think this was the period where SLR's were just starting to get AF, and I *think* it was frowned upon in many circles. Would love to hear some of the seasoned guys' take on this.

I got to go to a ribbon cutting of a new portrait studio this weekend!

My wife's job entails going around to the different businesses in our area. Before we went, my wife was telling me about how this person went to school for photography and goes into how she feels that Canon and Nikon hurt the true professionals because digital photography has made everyone a "pro". I was excited to see some awesome portrait work and check out the studio setup and possibly set up something to have some family portraits taken around the holidays.

When we got there I started looking around at the prints she has hanging everywhere. Within 5 minutes I was ready to go. Nothing impressive at all!!! I told my wife she shouldn't comment about Canon and Nikon making everyone a "pro" because she falls into that category, nothing more and shouldn't be making that statement to anyone.

Granted her photos probably look good to someone that has no idea about photography and I have no doubt she will be somewhat successful in our area because of that. But damn, kind of irritated me a little!

AF is needed with digital bodies, the viewfinders in them are not as good as the one's in the old film bodies. If I had a old split-prism screen in the digital bodies I'd be pretty happy.

Yep, there was a time when everything pertaining to focus was manual. It's how a lot of us older folks learned.

My dad gave me his old Asahi Pentax Spotmatic right before he passed away, a perfect example of a fully manual SLR. They didn't make for the best sports cameras, but they make you appreciate the great shots photogs of the era were able to capture. Some real skill involved there.

I did not mean that as a direct comparison. Moreso, about the progress of technology in general.

In that context, I think there's no question AF has come leaps and bounds from its early days of, what, the early 80's? It's pretty damn reliable now, all beefing to the contrary.

I don't mind the advancements. It's still about light and composition and subject. The camera is just the tool to capture it.

I don't mind em either - but, I have some issue with a camera doing all the technical work for me, just as I have some issue with a car shifting itself and helping me drive. (not totally comparable but similar).

and, if I was one of the people in the "ass" category in the other thread (or this one), . personally, I thought we were having a slightly heated, but still respectable debate.

But you still have complete control of the camera, you're not just pressing a button, if you don't won't to.

No, I meant the assholes in other forums. They are some real dicks at POTN and FM, but it's not as bad as dp. Take a couple features with the 7D, there's a screen that allows or shows you how to get better bokeh with it. Someone dickhead at POTN was screaming at the person why she bought a 7D and doesn't know how to use it. All she asking for was help finding the screen again. She found it just glancing at it when she first got the camera, but didn't know how to find it again, because she didn't know what it was called.

It's a little odd, but I suppose if you can AF accurately yourself, why not?
Depends on how much batteries were too - no rechargeables back then.

I have a better example for you - Multiple autofocus points, especially with SLRS. Very easy for multiple points to light up, and you know for sure that only one of them will be in focus due to DOF.

I meant that we have "discussions" here w/o being asses to each, as in other forums. We talk about the equipment and not dis'ing each other.

I dreamed I was shooting with my dad's old 35mm the other night. It's just sitting in my office. He had it all spruced up and sent it to me a couple of years ago. I need to load it with some B&W and take it for a spin. No AF.

I shot a roll of film through my old Minolta XD-11 that I used in my college photography course. I don't miss film

I do have all of the stuff for a darkroom setup though. Just don't have the time to use any of it.
