another thing, if you eliminated the tree and that other part (by framing differently) - the picture would take on a more 'iconic' look. Always keep your background in mind - sometimes its not easy to do this if you want a certain angle and happen to be at a certain event etc, but try keep it in mind to the best of your ability. And, if you need to you can also remove things in post.

I had to B&W the first one due to the nasty yellow lights... What do you guys do when there's so much yellow halogen lighting on your subject at night or indoor?

white balance (which you probably already tried?) and also you can go into selective color and try reducing the yellows manually. it's a balance you have to find, sometimes you may want to leave some of the yellow in, because the real lights are actually yellow.

White Balance setting on the camera? I actually have never tried it before.. I always just put it on AWB....... Should I utilize that?

I'm going to try that selective color thingy right now.

well you could try in-camera, but I find it to be so-so (at least on my old 5D) so I always do it in post. If you have Photoshop, use Color Balance.

Just tried Color Balance in CS5.. So it's the bottom yellow and blue bar that I have to play with right? It works pretty good!

thats good too, but you may not always have the chance to set it for certain conditions or shots. shoot in RAW and you're good to go.

^ Yes, when I took those shots... I didn't know how godly RAW format was...

After testing JPEG and RAW JPEG myself... it really convinced me to shoot in RAW mode.

i-94 coming into Chicago from the south - click the pic to see it at 1024px -

Canon 5D above (cropped to match 7D)

Canon 7D below

same settings, same lens, same minimal tweaking in LR, same sharpening.

(adjusted color balance minimally in post on the 5D shot)

if you look you can see a double image above each streetlight, on the 5D shot. after testing, I *think* this is happening as a result of the vibration from the shutter closing. I took several shots and could not get one without this. Electronic shutter ftw!

Interestingly, the exposure level meter on the 7D prescribed 13 seconds, while on the 5D it was showing 4 seconds. 13 seconds is the "correct" amount (and it's what I used on both shots).

Lens: EF200mm f/2.8L II USM
Image Date: 2010-06-26 21:01:21 -0500
Focal Length: 200.0mm
Aperture: f/20.0
Exposure Time: 13.000 s
ISO equiv: 100
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual
White Balance: Auto
Flash Fired: No (Manual)

I need to do this over again... I forgot about the time gap in between the shots.... because it was not my intention to do this when I took the initial 7D shot at 9:01 pm. I took the 5D shot about 20 mins later.

Rubin, I hate you for the hate that you are ultimately going to bring upon me by my fiancee when I end up with a 7D
