Honestly I think this is the best thing for Toyota. This can help force them to inject the quality back into their products.
For the prices they charge, I expect nothing less.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted May sales of 117,173 vehicles, an increase of 19.1 percent, the company announced today. American Honda year-to-date sales reached 487,282, an increase of 14.1 percent versus last year, based on the daily selling rate*.
Honda Division posted May sales of 105,407, an increase of 18.6 percent versus May 2009, led by total car sales of 62,597, up 20.5 percent. The Accord was the top-selling Honda model with sales of 30,077, an increase of 33.1 percent compared to last year. The Civic posted sales of 28,458, an increase of 37.3 percent. Additional models with year-over-year increases included the CR-V, up 22.5 percent with sales of 17,820; the Pilot, up 32.7 percent with sales of 9,834; and the Ridgeline, up 26.8 percent to 1,853.
"May marks the seventh straight month of sales increases for Honda," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "This speaks to Honda's focus on long-term, steady growth as the market continues to regain momentum."
Acura Division recorded May sales of 11,766, an increase of 24.3 percent versus May 2009, led by total light truck sales of 5,882, up 70.0 percent. MDX was the top-selling model for Acura, with sales of 4,064, up 65.5 percent.
*The daily selling rate (DSR) is calculated with 26 days for May 2010 and 26 days for 2009. Year-to-date, the DSR is calculated with 126 days for 2010, versus 127 days for 2009. All percentages reflect DSR.

Acura is performing better than Honda. not that Honda is bad. Alot more Pilots/CRVs. More Civics and Accords than Fit.
Look at MDX/ZDX/RL/RDX and add to it TL-SH-AWD.
AWD vehicles are now closer to 70% mark. Almost matching Audi.

I think price has had some effect as well, the TL has had some substantial price increases since 2006. In 06 you could get a 6MT no nav in the low 30's (maybe high 20's depending on incentives). To get a 6MT in 07 you had to get a type S with nav and you were in the mid to high 30's. If you want a 6MT now you are going to spend upwards of 40K.
It certainly isn't just the lack of 6MT sales that has led to the decrease in overall sales but the 8-9K price increase on a 'fully loaded" TL over the past 4 years could be part of the cause.

Remember these sales figures are compared to May 09 when car sales were the worst in decades. Even 10-20% increases are just barely enough to get sales back to relatively normal levels.

Why they ever thought it was a good idea to release that abortion as the next model in the line-up is nothing short of mind-blowing.

It's the styling. The 4G TL is a better car in everyway than the 3G except for the grille. It's too polarizing. Why can't they get a clue and make it at least like the TSX and not as pronounced.

Considering its price and that it's selling twice as many as the RL, Acura should be happy. It's probably still nowhere near the sales level they expected but not dismal like the RL.

So the ZDX is on track to move around 3,500 units this year. That's not good (although the X6 only moved 4500-4800 so far in its run on American showroom floors).
But then again BMW likes the sales of their X6 and Toyota has kept their low volume Land Cruiser in the market.
So unfortunately for us I suspect it will continue to be prowling American roads for a while.

^ Someone mentioned that the sales goal was 5000. At 3500 it's still not dismal like the RL, where one has to wonder what is keeping Acura from completely pulling the plug. At the RL sales levels they probably built enough already for the whole year and now they are just waiting to sell them off.

The fact that the MKS EcoBoost AWD, a LINCOLN, is handily outselling all RL trims says an awful lot about the RL.
The real interesting piece will be when the Equus goes on sale. If THAT thing outsells the RL ....

^^ I'm sure Acura is so excited to sell 300 per month versus selling their stated goal of 500 per month.

That's been the excuse for poor TL sales around these parts ever since the 4G debuted.
I believe its also the official excuse for crappy Insight sales and was once the official RL excuse until that train obviously left the station.
Apparently Honda/Acura is the only company that suffers these availability issues. Other makes sales issues are because of the product, not Honda/Acura, they just don't make enough.

However, when a manufacturer announces a sales target I think they're generally conservative with their estimates. The fact that the ZDX isn't hitting its conservative estimates is telling.

Honda sales way down in Canadia.
http://www.canadiandriver.com/2010/0...own-in-may.htm
I'd like to think Canadians are ahead of the curve on this one. The Civic has lost its position as Canada's best selling car to Mazda 3 for the first time in around 11 years.
And I'm not sure about the entire lineup but I could have sworn I was seeing 0% financing on the Civic and Accord for the last couple of months at least.
http://www.canadiandriver.com/2010/0...own-in-may.htm
Toronto, Ontario – Canadian vehicle sales in May were up slightly from the same month last year to 154,285 from 154,018, a gain of 0.2%*. Vehicle sales have increased every month this year, but in a sign that new vehicle sales might be slowing, May was the smallest sales increase so far this year. Year to date, overall vehicle sales are up 8.4% to 631,195.
Light trucks (SUVs, pickups, minivans) continue to be more popular than passenger cars. In May, light truck sales increased 12.8%, while passenger car sales slid 10.6%. Year to date, light truck sales have increased 18.9% while car sales are down 1.5% overall.
Interestingly, domestic brands did much better than import brands in May. Domestic vehicle sales were up 8.9% in May mostly because of a surprising performance by Chrysler (+53.5%) and Ford (+19.4%) while GM slid (-17.6%). However, GM’s figures include a steep drop in sales at Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer, three brands that it is phasing out. Sales of its remaining brands, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac increased 15.4% for the month.
In May, import brands’ sales slid 6.5% overall with disappointing performances from Honda (-28.2%), Toyota (-16.6%), Nissan (-2.4%), BMW (-11.8%) and Suzuki (-44.2%). However, sparkling sales from Subaru (+25.6%), Hyundai (+12.6%), Kia (+13.9%), Volkswagen (+9.0%), Mercedes-Benz (+22.2%), and Audi (+13.4%) helped lift import sales.
In the first five months of 2010, domestic brands share of the market increased slightly to 45.2% from 44.5%.

Point taken. The investment in R&D to get the ZDX on the road wasn't much so its gravy on top of MDX sales.
However, when a manufacturer announces a sales target I think they're generally conservative with their estimates. The fact that the ZDX isn't hitting its conservative estimates is telling.

MDX is basically late 2006 design. except for transmission other updates are mostly cosmetic.
Compared it to X5 updates of new turbo 3.0 engine vs normally aspirated 3.0 engine. along with lower starting price. BMW price went down, engine seriously upgraded to V8 performance and transmission went to 8speed.
Acura prices are going higher with minimal updates and sale performance is not bad considering size of model line up.
Acura sales more than Lexus in Canada. other companies are throwing alot of money into there luxury brands from diesels to full line up of hybrids to coupes to convertibles etc. Acura is still standard formula.

I'm kinda surprised the CR-V is still doing extremely well. It's been getting dinged in some recent comparison tests, and I have been seeing a lot of the new Hyundai Tuscans, which I thought would take away some sales.

Well, a few months ago I read that Honda didn't build a lot of ZDX's, but were planning to increase the production number gradually. I think we have been seeing that for the past few months:

It's not impressive but the overall trend seems to be going up. We'll see if it will hit the target of 500/mth.

I hope it doesn't sell well. Hopefully that will get the point across to Acura that something needs to change, most importantly STYLING, even though that's no guarantee.

In terms of volume 50% of the Acura's sold are trucks, and 40% of Honda's are trucks also. Considering where Honda/Acura were a decade ago that is pretty impressive. If half of Acura sales are SUV's then having the ZDX flagship makes some sense, though sales could be better.
The real disappointment is the hybrid sales, a new drivetrain approach is really needed there.

Hyundai has all new DI engine, 6speed auto and options that only available in Acura like Push button start, rear view camera, HD radio Some people like electronics. and than there is 10 year warranty. (It is another stupidity to give 10 year warranty on DI engines. it will definitely has long term costs)
Hyundai is doing badly in higher priced vehicles like Genesis, Azera. I can forsee that Hyundai Sonata will have sales momentum for 1 year atleast. than it will taper off. Honda has pretty stable long term customers that buy vehicles on very long model cycle.

woweee the Sonata is definitely headed in the right direction. For the record Acura in all of their wisdom believed the 4g would hit 70k in sales annually when it was first released. I'm sure they revised their target after the first full year of production.

Sonata isn't going anywhere my friend.
sonata's sales numbers is just the beginning. fleet sales is still very low. #3 in retails only with 4 bangers. sonata will seriously challenge both accord and camry whenever turbo/hybrid arrives. they expect turbo and hybrid to be at least 15% of total sales. and sonata wagon might come here too.
and hyundai is planning to move Santa Fe to Georgia so they let montgomery plant build only sonatas.

Genesis is doing alot better than RL. Azera is hyundai's RL. it's getting killed by competition.

Tucson has such a small cargo. CRV is alot bigger. but Tucson is selling as well as CRV in many smaller countries where size doesn't really matter.
