On paper, this new Acura 6AT is no ordinary gearbox. It can blip the throttle to do match-rev downshifts; rather than using gear clutches to speed up or slow down the engine rpm, like ordinary auto trannies.
But this 6AT is not exactly like the real dual-clutch trannies, with which the other disengaged clutch is already spinning at the correct speed for instant next-gear engagement.
So this new 6AT will definitely perform better than any other conventional auto gearboxes. I want to see how similar it is in fast gear shifting, especially when down-shifting like 6->5->4->3->2 from high vehicle speeds, when compared to the real dual-clutch ones.

LOL, there are so many 'experts' here! Yeah, the last gen TL Type-S blipped the throttle on SS downshifts. It couldn't to the 'double kick down' feature though. (I believe the 370Z also does it)

Don't understand why Honda would leave out the good stuff (throttle blipping), but eventually decided to put it back in into the 4G MMC TL ?

Wonder why Honda has carried over the 3.5L-V6 and 5AT, from the 3G TL-S, into the 4G pre-MMC TL, all except for the throttle blipping feature ?

I'm the Firestarter
I looked at the pics on acura.ca. It's still not a good looking car, but at least now it's less ugly.

the programming for the blips on downshift made downshifting on auto's a bit odd and not as smooth as they should have been. Probably it was due to limitations in the TL-S transmission so they took it out of the 4G TL because they couldn't guise it as a Sporty feature. Now with the 6AT, the issue is probably corrected and allows for better downshifts that are probably much smoother.

While comparing the exterior color charts for the Acura.com and the Acura.ca, I noticed that the Canadian SH-AWD Elite (=Advance for US) has one more silver color choice - "alabaster silver metallic", other than the "forged silver metallic", and will be available as of July 2011.

My wife and i were at the Dealer sunday looking. She really likes the TL after our little weekend in LA with Acura. She also really likes the ZDX and is torn.

That sucks that the advance package isnt available for the 6MT and the color selection for it isnt that great either.

As my 09 MDX will be in for its A123 service (negotated to < $200), I'll check out the new TL while I'm waiting. In addition to a styling that seems to have gone from pukable to tolerable, the 20/29 MPG makes the base TL a tempting lease prospect for the wife and I.

idk i would feel so weird driving this gen with a 6MT lol. So huge, it looks more like a cruising car than a car to actually speed with. i'm just saying since i love to speed and evade traffic.

2010 TL AWD 6MT: New King
I'm not sure why Acura will not offer the advance package with the 6MT. I would have gladly paid for ventilated seats and BSMS if it were available in 2010, obnoxious beak and all.

With the SH-AWD advanced package it does it better than the 3g does, especially with the blind spot warning.

Because of the lack of demand. MT models account for 5% of total TL sales. They can't have too many variations unless they charge more for each car (like BMW/MB/etc do). Heck, even for those tier 1 brands, they don't offer everything. For instance, 4matic is only available with MB C300.

IMHO, people who want the 6MT won't mind paying for an exclusive machine (at least I wouldn't)
Well, guess you can't satisfy everyone :throws tomato at myself:

Yeah and at a certain point you have to throw in the towel. Acura's continued model proliferation hasn't resulted in increased sales or (judging from posts like this) more satisfied customers or prospective customers. Don't forget that Acura sold umteen TLs in earlier days with essentially base and Navi as options. Personally, I'd welcome a return to a simpler model line up that included less trims, and more models (coupe???)

I agree MT models account for a low percentage of sales. However, given that the TL 6MT is already beefed up with a required Tech package ($3-4k additional) and mine had the HPT ($1-2k), what's a couple thousand more?

The traditional preconceptions of smaller size, lighter weight and even balance don't really apply (at least not as much) to rear biased AWD's with torque vectoring. You only give up a little straightline due to size and weight as expected but still you can make a case that this is the best handling and braking car in it's competitive set and there are publication test results to back that.
Not liking the car for it's style might be warranted at this point but it's more capable than any 3G I have had, which includes a 6MT A-spec and 6MT TLS.
