Legend (RL) refreshed in Japan
Temple of Vtec
We told you back in the spring that the RL would be receiving another mild refresh for the 2012 model year. We also told you to expect to see the fitment of Acura's 6-speed automatic transmission and some mild styling tweaks, but little else was known concerning what else might be in store for us. Now that Honda has officially issued a press release detailing the changes to the Japanese-market Honda Legend, we (probably) know a little more. According to the google translation of the press release, along with the expected 6-speed automatic, the update brings new noise reduction technology in the form of an in-wheel resonator designed to reduce in-cabin noise. Here's the translation of the relevant segment:
hollow resonator 18 (silencer) to be fitted in around the wheel so, or when the seams over the highway, and discomfort that occurs inside the tire when traveling on rough road resonant sound, with the wheel mechanism is suppressed by the world's first Noizuridyushingu resonance absorption.
Also, it appears that the RL will benefit from an upgraded VGA navi display and an updated HDD-based navi system. No surprise there. There appear to be few other changes of note.

all that technology won't do any good or attract new buyers if the design is still poop; lexus uses no such noise cancellation technology and it's super super quiet; infiniti already have some sort of noise cancellation and it's still loud as heck.
don't understand why it took this long for the RL to get a 6-speed; for crying out loud, the Legend of old got a 6-speed stick.

yeah i dont get this noise cancellation BS. ive driven a TL that has this and i still hear road noise. how about some thicker or laminated glass and more insulation instead.

I am more surprised to find out that the Legend is not discontinued afterall, contrary to previous reports.

The RL has the ASC already but this is another system which features a resonator build into each wheel and tire hub to absorb some of the noise before it becomes noise. This is more specific to noises from road surfaces. It supposed to be an industry first. Wonder how effective it actually is?

i agree. they need better sound insulation instead of all these high tech gadgets that don't do a thing. even the germans can't figure it out how lexus can be so quiet. my RX330 is way quieter than my RL. and the few LS400s and LS430s that i test drove is silent at idle and barely a whisper on the road. simply amazing!
#2616
I hope this tech QUICKLY trickles down to the other models in acuras and hondas. If this is just part of the actual wheel, wouldn't it be almost an instant update for most models?
My 2010 TL Base is quiet, but still barely luxury quiet to me. It still transmits way too much noise over rough roads and too much hwy noise. Though it's near silent when cruising below 60mph on perfect pavement.
It may give me a reason to upgrade my wheels hmmmmmm

I also agree, why not just simply add more sound deadening? It's not like the sound deadening turn lexus vehicles into heavy tanks, most of them are about average for the class. For example:
Lexus ES350 3605lb
Acura TL Base 3721lb
The lighter ES is significantly quieter than the TL in all situations. Not to say the TL is simply heavier in other areas, but I hope i made my point. (more sound deadening doesn't necessarily mean significantly more weight, if any)

If this is in or on the hub of the vehicle im not sure i would want it. Its just more unsprung weight that i wouldnt want.

Acura TL FWD handles better than RWD GS350 let alone ES350. which is even worse than FWD Honda Accord.
There is no evidence from tests that lexus is quieter except for LS460.
MDX is as much quieter as LX570/GS460.

I don't disagree but I feel Acura's are at least above average when it comes to wind noise and outside of the cabin noise insulation, it's the road noise (tires, wheels, suspension and road surfaces) that is the problem and the new silencer seems like a direct solution to a direct sound related issue.

Why they don't follow others is another issue but it seems to me that this is probably the cheapest, most effecient way to combat this issue while not investing too much into an over extended model cycle as is.
Being so critical and negative of this new feature, I would imagine you are in a market for an RL and don't approve which is fine but why not wait and see the kind of results it produces before judging it?
Maybe we will be saying Acura can do why can't the others, or maybe not. Either way, being for or against this approach is a little premature to declare right now.

Acuras are more sporty, taller, wider than Lexus. so some of the road noise is wider tires, larger frontal areas. and higher rpm engine.

Then we have you and your pontification:
1. taller/wider = Sporty. Your opinion. Check
2. TL handles better than GS/ES because you read that in some magazine. Check
3. No evidence that lexus is quieter, because you didn't read it in a magazine. Check
4 MDX is as much quieter than LX570/GS460, because you might have read that in some magazine. Check
Got it! Just making sure everything is still working for you. Your research is impressive.

smart key.
Power folding mirrors.
In Japanese specification it produces 276 ft-lb of torque and 305 bhp. 40gb HDD.
I dont fully understand the Fuel conumption calculation.
new Accord V6 gets 9.9km/Litre in Japanese standards.
new Legend do 9km/Litre.
If these standards are extrapolated. I am expecting fuel economy only 10% difference from USDM Accord V6
This is for a car that is 500lbs heavier than Accord V6 with AWD.

For example, compare my 760Li to an LS460L. In the LS I test drove, a cop car passed by me and I heard it a full blare. As well I could hear other road noise like the radios of other cars. Did I hear wind noise? Not really.
But my 760 is different. An ambulance passes me and I can hear it, but it's not as loud as it was in the LS. As well, I can't hear other peoples radios nor can I feel their thumping bass. To top if off, a friend said to get my brakes checked out (I had my service due indicator on for new rotors and pads) and he was waiting for me in a parking garage. When he got in I asked him why he said that. His response, I could hear them pad squealers from the fourth floor level! I couldn't even hear the squeal in the car, that's how good it's insulated. (FYI, just to explain the seals on my drivers door, there is a seal between the fender and rear door and as well the top of the door and sideskirt, then double seals on the bottom, sides and top to help further keep stuff out.
The Germans are very smart about sound technology and over-doing other things. For example my doors have 3 seals on them and are fitted tightly. This helps quite a bit with wind noise and as well sound suppression. Add to that numerous modules in the door along with padded full leather interior panels with thick glass and you can barely hear a thing!
Acura on the other hand would go with the more economical route, 2 seals on the door and slightly looser gaps to avoid more "error" panels. Further more, a thin sheet of ashphalt mat is applied to the floor in strategic area's versus using thick carpeting and plush padding along with thick sound deadener to silence out sound.
If anything, the statement that you get what you pay for is true. A better value in terms of features means cost cutting in other area's.
As far as Honda's new noise suppression technology, I think it's a great idea to an extent. If it's lightweight enough and also makes a dramatic impact, its good in my book. I've been a supporter of be work smarter, not harder.
The same principle applies here as with other automotive aspects. Rather than have a V8 putting out 300 HP that revs to 5K RPM, I'd rather take a V6 that revs to 8K that puts out 300 HP.

Well, I think it's a good feature to have, and it's unique too. I mean, at least Honda is not copying other companies (which is quite different than some other companies).
IMO, before saying this tech is useless or it won't be useful, or it will add too much unsprung weight, why not be patient and wait for the full specs to come out first? The silencer could add 10lb to each wheel, or may be 0.1lb, we don't know. It might reduce 0.1dB, or 10dB, again, we don't know.
Whether it works well or not, at least Honda is listening AND actually doing something to address some of issues.

Honda is trying to match Audi A8 with handling, comfort, breaking and super silence.
インチノイズリデューシングアルミホイール hollow resonator 18 (silencer) to be fitted in around the wheel so, or when the seams over the highway, and discomfort that occurs inside the tire when traveling on rough road resonant sound, with the wheel mechanism is suppressed by the world's first Noizuridyushingu resonance absorption. さらに、ボディ各所に効果的に配置した遮音材/吸音材との相乗効果により、走行中の様々な周波数のノイズを 効果的に低減し、最上級セダンにふさわしい静粛性を実現しています。 In addition, strategically placed insulation throughout the body / acoustic material and synergistically to effectively reduce noise while driving at various frequencies, to achieve the highest level sedan worthy of quietness.
