A v8 for for the Acura brand is convenient. Since when is Acura about convenient?

That might not be a bad idea. It was light, rwd, and cheap ($2000 and 2200 lbs). "We need an economical RWD coupe back in the USA!"

The pinto sold quite a few more units per year then most people think...

Acura sold 200,000 units total as a company for the 2nd year in a row:

http://www.hondanews.com/CatID3000?m...56922&mime=asc

In it's worst year (1980), Ford sold 185,054 pintos, and at it's height (1974) it sold 544,209 pintos.

http://pintopage.fordpinto.com/Production%20Figures.htm

Most car companies would be estatic nowadays to sell 185,000 of one model much less 1/2 a million in one year.

Honda sells a little over 350,000 Accords per year:

^^ Greenie, you're on to something here.

I never understood why Honda didn't plan the current S2000 for platform sharing. Hopefully the next-gen will offer a light, FR coupe with Acura luxury. If it is priced around $30-40ish, I'd certainly consider buying one.

I've been saying this for awhile... a hardtop s2000 with a very small backset would be a decent seller IMHO.

The XGA/Sports4 could be just that...

Make it a light, rwd, 2+2 coupe and it will be the only one out there other than the RX-8 until BMW brings over the 1series or until Ghosn brings back the Datsun name for a company specializing in lightweight RWD vehicles.

Yea, great idea, we can have a 'HOT' ass sale that sucks people in and then they are dead, its perfect. Sales without a warranty, CAUSE THE OWNERS ARE DEAD.

They don't need to bring back the CL name. It's just interesting that Acura doesn't have a coupe at all in it's lineup. No RSX (really a hatchback, but technically still a coupe), and no NSX.

I dont' really feel the need to comment on your "I see dead people" argument, as it really has nothing to do about the point YOU were trying to make about sales figures (or lack thereof), but what the heck...

The CL had 16,000 units sold in 2003, and that's why it was killed. The pinto in it's worst year sold 11.5 times that even after people died in fiery car crashes.

Any car company that can sell 185,000 cars with people dieing terrible deaths has one hell of a marketing department Instead of spending $11 per car to fix millions of pintos, ford figured it was cheaper just payout on the wrongful death lawsuits instead

But the NSX was really never about selling large amounts of cars. It's a halo car, only used to help shape peoples perception of the Acura brand as a whole.

It would be nice to see a FR sub-nsx 2+2 coupe tho'... and, heyitsme, it doesn't have to be called a CL and it doesn't even have to look like anything like a pinto either

It's in silver (what a surprise) and sadly ... pics look underwhelming. Hoping when I see it in person in Detroit next week (or so) ... it'll look better.

Detroit 01/07/2007 --

The show-stopping Acura "Advanced Sports Car Concept" made its world debut today at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. The dynamically styled concept provides a preview of the design direction for the successor to the Acura NSX.

Created to take exotic sports car styling to a new level, the concept is designed to incorporate a powerful front-mounted, V-10 engine and a new high-performance, rear-wheel-drive based version of Acura's exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive(TM) (SH-AWD(TM)).

"The Acura brand will always be a home for people who love to drive," said Takeo Fukui, president & CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. "As we advance toward building a car like this, I can tell you it will feature advanced technology matching our passion for performance."

The concept's exterior demonstrates a dynamic fusion of advanced technology and emotion. The long, pronounced hood features deeply sculpted lines and embossed air vents, both of which hint at the powerful engine beneath. The exterior lines run the length of the body, creating a ribbon-like effect from the front headlights to the rear wheel arches, evoking a feeling of movement and power.

Although modern in its appearance, the Advanced Sports Car Concept retains the subtle cues associated with its predecessor, the NSX. The concept's slim, LED headlights are pushed wide and designed to mimic the pop-up headlights found on the first generation NSX. Other styling hints include a modern take on wraparound rear taillights and the all black cockpit.

"Our intention was to design an exotic sports car that gracefully combines advanced technology and strong emotion," said Jon Ikeda, principal designer, Acura Design Center. "The technical, machined surfaces and keen-edge design are balanced with sweeping curves and dramatic lines, all of which results in the ultimate exotic sports car."

Wide and low to the ground with a 108.8 inch wheelbase, the concept is anchored by grippy 19 inch front and 20 inch rear performance tires which are mounted to custom billet-machined, polished aluminum wheels. Powerful, ventilated carbon ceramic brake discs and eight-piston calipers accent the wheels. Bold wheel arches and flares add to the concept's aggressive appearance.

The low slung cabin is constructed entirely of tinted glass and sits flush against the body. Door handles are also flush mounted, allowing the sports car to retain a clean and aerodynamic appearance. The Advanced Sports Car Concept features a carbon fiber underbody and the rear is finished with aggressive quad exhaust pipes and integrated rear diffusers, further communicating its high performance potential.

The Advanced Sports Car Concept was designed by the Acura's Los Angeles-based design team that will be based at the new Acura Design Center, opening this summer.

Additional Acura information and downloadable high-resolution images are available at www.acuranews.com.

Overall the lines are nice, but it looks too...concept-like. I was expecting something closer to reality from this concept. It reminds me of the concept that came out for the RDX and MDX.

Oh no.... I am so underwhelmed by this! It certainly is NOT show-stopping. It's "nice" but as far as I am concerned, for such an important sports car for Acura, it needs to look aggressive and it is supposed to scream "look at me" and "stop the traffic"!!! Unfortunately, this does not do either. Also, apart from the central crease all the way from the nose to the trunk, where are the other Acura design themes?

As much as some of you didn't like it, the Advanced Sedan Concept achieved exactly what this one did not and should have.... sigh....

But the production version of those two car didn't diverge that greatly from the concept version.

I think you guys are expecting WAY too much. I like it, but I won't hold judgement until I see the actual production vehicle in front of my eyes.

there is a reason its called "advanced sports CONCEPT".

The platform is obviously the one being used for the NSX if all the rumors are true about it being FE V10. I almost am willing to bet that the next gen sports car will use this platform and some of the curves but look more "reality based" like the HSC.

just my

OH YES, baby!!

now we wait for the rear-biased SHAWD TSX and TL!! I agree the new design is not ground breaking revolutionary like in '91, i hope to see the new engine and AWD technology!

ceramic rotors and 8-pot calipers...that car better go hella fast!

Show us an actual car now... those are just CGIs. Why even bother discussing a computer render of what it will sort of look like. It looks like the sketch we saw awhile back turned into a computer drawing.

This thread will be interesting when we see some actual pictures of metal.

I still don't think this car will hold up to the hype... maybe Honda will prove me wrong.

I don't want an over weight SH-AWD system with rear wheel bias. Give me RWD like the original NSX.
