Just dropped my car off today at Acura Downtown (Toronto) to get started on the oil consumption test. They said the first step is to do an oil change. Will keep you guys posted.

As I posted in another thread on the same topic, if you got the same letter I did, I'm not certain what good the test will do unless you qualify for the 8 year/ 200,000 km extended, since the "interim" warranty will be up before your test is complete. If your in-service date is late 2011 or later, you should be fine.

I actually didn't get any letter for this, but I am not the original owner. I just noticed it burning alot of oil, saw this thread and called them. They checked my VIN and told me the manufacture date was sometime in July of 2011 so I am barely making it in the time frame. Mine is a 2012 and my mileage is currently at 170,XXX KM.

When I dropped my car for the oil consumption test, they never did an oil change. They just top off the oil and ask me to come back after 1000 miles.
So I got the car back after Acura did the oil change and airbag recall. I checked the dipstick after I got to work and they did change the oil and it was topped right up to the line. They said to come back when I notice the level go below the bottom line or when I hit 1500KM, whichever comes first. Although, the service guy told me that my oil pump is leaking. I highly doubt the oil pump leak is the cause to this. But they said they'll still do the consumption test and see what the results are. The service guy seemed pretty aware of the oil consumption issue. Other than that, the service was good at this dealership, it went smooth and they didn't even try to upsell me anything.
Here is a picture of page 1 of the invoice if it helps anyone.
Just an update from my last visit to Acura. Last week I noticed there was no oil on the dipstick so I called to make an appointment. When I checked the dipstick I was at 910KM but by the time I got an appointment with Acura and brought it in, I was at 1275KM. So according to them, I lost 1.7L in 1300KM. I will update on my next visit.

My letter said all vehicles will be covered regardless of age or miles until September 2019. Plenty of time.
Maybe its 6 months after they send you the letter with different people getting the letter at different times.
Im not sure its true but I would also assume that you really only need to START the test within those 6 months because if you think of it, what if you don't drive your car a lot? What if it takes 8 months to drive 4500 km (1 liter burnt in 1500 km x3)?
It took me pretty much 6 months to drive the 3750km it took my car to burn 3 liters.

Totally different letter.. Maybe Canada vs US? Mine had my name instead of Dear Acura Owner. Dated February 2019, but I don't think I got it in February... Doesn't seem that long ago.

I agree it should be that you have to start the process within the 6 months. And I spoke with my local dealer, and he said that's how they're treating it (though the consumption test has to be documented on a work order). That said, the letter doesn't say that.
In my case, it looks like it doesn't matter anyways. I started my test in February, and am now down to 70-80% oil life, and I'm still showing plenty of oil on the stick. Doesn't appear that I've got a problem.
Just another update, I took it into Acura today after noticing there was no oil on the stick this morning. I have driven 800KM since the last visit. They told me I lost 1.7L again. The lady told me I most likely will be getting the warranty parts replacements. So figures crossed. But I still got 1 more test to do. Which doesn't seem like a long time at the rate it's burning the oil. Will keep you guys posted.
Sorry to sound like an ass, but I don't think we need to hear every detail about how the dealer is treating everyone during their oil consumption tests. It would be much more beneficial and interesting if people would report back AFTER their cars are fixed and what their impressions are of the service they received, other components they had replaced at the same time (timing belt, water pump, etc), if they've noticed an improvement in fuel economy, engine performance, etc.

Okay there moderator..
This is what this forum is for. Contributions and feedback. If its not helping you, it will definitely help someone else. So think about other people before you start speaking on behalf of everyone.
Another update: I went in for the last phase of the test today after I noticed no oil on the stick. They said I burned 1.1L and I drove 800KM since the last visit. They said I'm approved for the replacements but I'm going to have to wait to get it done as they need to order the parts. I'm taking it in on Aug 26th.
After starting my consumption test, looks like I am at 1qt per 2000 miles.
Service quantified it's 1qt per 1000 miles to qualify for the repair.
Also, said I can take it in every 1000 miles until.......September. Then, it's over.
While I'm not exactly upset I don't qualify, I still think it's excessive consumption. I'm not looking to get the repair completed just for the sake of getting a rebuilt engine...at least not enough to push the issue. But.. if I qualify... I qualify... and would want the work completed to fix the problem. I've never had to add oil between changes to any car I bought after, at least, 1995.
But at least until September, I'm getting topped off every 1k miles. Paid enough for the car... I'm getting my nine dollars in, well deserved, oil!
I've stopped on 06/25/9 by Syracuse Crest Acura to get a time frame as to when my car will be getting repairs done. Service adviser informed me that they are out of some parts and did not provide me even with an estimate.
Received the recall notice for my /12 TL in December and began the testing shortly after. During one of the test visits to the dealer, they noticed the rear valve cover gasket was leaking and I had them repair it.
Went in for the recall service at the beginning of June. Work took 2 days, and I had them do the water pump and timing tensioner while they were in there. Haven't noticed any significant improvements in fuel economy or performance since, but glad it was done as I'm just rolling over 200,000km.
This is a follow up post for my Oil Consumption test.
The test started on December 27, 2018 and ended July 31, 2019. I don't drive as much as now a days which may explain the longer testing period.
Results are:
Dec 27, 2018 at 141,239 KM was when the test started.
April 12, 2019 at 145,328 KM was when oil level reached the lower mark. I brought it back to the dealership where they topped it up.
May 27, 2019 at 146,459 KM the oil level reached the lower mark again. I brought it back to the dealership where they topped it up again.
July 31, 2019 at 148,759 KM the oil level reached the lower mark. I brought it back to the dealership for a final analysis and to determine if I qualify for the engine work needed to prevent this issue from occurring again.
I was told that my vehicle does qualify for the repairs. The dealership mentioned there is a shortage of parts. The parts will not be ready till Dec 2019 at the earliest. In the meantime, they indicated to continue to top up oil levels as they reach the lower mark on the dipstick. I don't need to bring it back to the dealership for that, I can do it myself and still qualify for the service work.
For those who are curious, I bought the vehicle used from the dealership it had about 9,000 KM on it when I bought it. I noticed that it started to consume oil around June of 2017. Since then I checked the oil levels monthly and topped up the oil as needed.
I received the letter from Acura Nov 2018, at that time I already did an oil change outside of the dealer. I decided to get the oil changed again at the dealer so I can start the test without waiting till the next oil change. Based on my driving habits this would have been in July of 2019. I should also note that I was due for Service A13 at the dealerships recommendation I held off on getting the servicing done until the test was concluded. By the time I had the servicing completed I was about 500 KM overdue.
Some key items I learned through all this is,
Check the oil levels when the engine is hot. That was the direction the dealership gave me.
The oil levels have to be at the lower mark or below it. If it is even slightly above the mark, the dealership will tell you to come back. I had this happen twice where the oil was just above the lower mark.
I checked my oil levels weekly and took photos. However, the dealerships won't use the photos.
I am located in Edmonton, Canada the dealership I am working with is West Side Acura.
Hopefully this helps everyone going through the test or about to start the test.
I'll post another follow up post after the engine work is done, which I hope is in December.
HI,
I am buying 2013 TL from my daughter which she bought in 2016 from a non Acura dealer.
I don't think she received a recall letter.
Car now has 94K miles. I will have to check with her if car is losing oil.
Is 2013 covered in this recall?
I entered the VIN and it came up empty.

Yes to 2013. The recalls only apply to the 3.7L AWD model. Is that what you have?

It isn't technically a recall, so it won't show up. The issue is on the 2009-2014 TL (and other Acura models) with the J37 engine (SH-AWD). My 2011 doesn't consume any oil for the first 2,200 miles, then progressively starts to consume oil up to a rate exceeding 1 quart per thousand miles, which is the threshold set by Acura. Unfortunately I missed the deadline by a mere two weeks and was therefore declined a warranty repair. The vehicle has 106k miles. Visit your local dealer and ask them the start an oil consumption test. It's free of
charge.

It will depend on when the 2013 was first sold. As long as it hasn't passed its 8 year anniversary it should be covered.
Thank you all,
Yes mine is 2013 SH-AWD.
I did change oil today and noticed it very dirty (may be specks of flakes? Not metal)
I will call dealer tomorrow to setup an appointment.
My daughter had the car serviced at other Acura dealer but I will get records from her...
