2009 Acura TL/CL Type-S-Merged Threads-All 2009 topics will be merged here

Was at the dealer on Thursday and the manager was also talking to me about how gorgeous the new models were. He also mentioned that they are planning a V8 upgrade for the TL but of course not for the 2009 models. Truth or fiction I don't know.
This is how the conversation went:
Him: Forgot exactly what he said but it was something about Acura planning/adding a V8 and V10 (NSX) to the lineup.
Me: V8? Wow, in what car, the RL?
Him: No, the TL.
These last two lines were exact.

@ JD TL-S: what do you mean, ONLY? 300 is where everyone is around: 335i, IS350, G35, etc., and to my knowledge, none of them offer AWD as standard, and defintetly not one as unique as Acura's SH-AWD. They have absolutely NO reason to offer more than 310 at the most hp on the base model. for a Type-S, 330 is a distinct possibilty however.
the current base TL goes 0-60 in something like 5.9, and a Civic Si in high 6s o low 7s. the TL will be a tad slower, but not that much. the 09 will probably go 0-60 in 6.1 or something.
As for the manual thing,I'm not sure if it will be offered with it. the TL is based on the Accord, which only has a manual availble with the 4-cylinders.
I noticed that no one has mentioned the CL. Does anyone think it will be revived? It would make for good competition for the G37, 335i coupes etc., especially considering how good the Acord coupe looks.

Maybe the TSX against the 1 series, and the TL 3 series. a 3.7L V6 only producing 300HP will not be able to beat the smaller lighter 3 series on performance tho. Then there's the G37 too. Guess we'll all have to wait it out until the LA show.

The TL could be considered a 3series and a 5series fighter, depending on your criteria. the TL is obviously around the same price point and power peak as the 3series, but with the space to match the 5series. the TSX in size could compete with the 3series, but is quite a bit cheaper,

Ok, so here is the 2009 Acura TSX.

I'm not feeling that front grill. Looks like a smiling mouth. The scoop at the bottom is pretty cool but I still dig my 04 TL front grill better. Hope they don't do the same for the 09 TL.

Gasoline is at an all time high and diesel is over $4/gallon. The majority of Americans don't want 350HP AWD.
This is why you see Acura and most of their competitors offer two models; base and sport. And the base model sells a lot more than the sport (i.e. IS250 vs IS350 and 328i vs 335i). Even those two max out at 300HP.
I wouldn't expect too much of a change. Perhaps a 250-260HP base and 300HP sport with AWD. I for one welcome the 300HP AWD model even if it's slightly slower than the current TL-S. It's not like I really push the TL-S on my way to work or to buy groceries.
If you guys want race cars then don't buy Acura. Go get you a plastic Pontiac G8.

Hey..... I heard yesterday that for 09 there will be 3 new models of TL!! WOW, A basic = front drive standard motor. 2nd = SHAWD little bigger motor. Then the S-type!! 3.7L worth of 310-320HP! With the improved S-type package. Also SHAWD! Yes. Just thought you might want to know. I talked to a guy that saw the type S TL. He said it was very impressive. I believe his words were "drop dead gorgeous!"

thats good to hear spiritman...just a quick question...does the addition of awd add on weight to a car?? if the new type s (if it will be out in 09) is going to be awd w/ a 3.7L engine, will it be as fast as say a g37 w/ 330hp?

IMO, SHAWD with 300HP would barely be faster than the current TL-S. The AWD system adds a lot of weight and sucks up much more power than it being FWD. Why can't they just go RWD

Last week my dealer mentioned it would be hitting show room floors in september. I'm split on getting an '08 or waiting for the '09. Based on the issues I had with my '01 CL-S during the first few years I'm a little cautious getting the '09. However, after 160K miles it's still going strong and with no more issues. Decisoins, decisions, decisions ........

Despite the rumors and hearsay, I personally doubt there will be a TL Type-S until a year or two after the 4G TL hits the market. That's been the pattern for the 2G and the 3G - to use the TL-S as a Mid-Model Refresh.
300 HP SH-AWD won't beat the current 3G base 0 - 60, let alone come close the current Type-S. Dyno's of the RL show that it loses 30% of it's HP between the crank and the wheels. 300 HP - 30% = ~210 WHP PLUS the extra SH-AWD weight. I'd call that lethargic. When it finally builds up a head of steam, I bet it'll turn well though.

I was at my dealership last Saturday and my service manager (who happens to be a Supra Tuner) said he had seen pix of the new TL in some brochures that had arrived.
He wouldn't let me see them but said the car looks "very muscular" and that I would like what Acura had done.
we'll see...

For everyone arguing that 3 series is in the same proformance range as the TL-S I think you might be wrong. The 3 series out proforms the tl-s by a mile. I think a lot of people are forgetting that the bimmer comes with a stock twin turbo. I drove my buddies 335i and all I can say is that my 08 TL-S wouldn't have kept up with it.

^^^everyone knows that an 08TLS can keep up with a 335 but everyother 3 series out there cant compete. I thnk that Acura will proabaly come out with a more efficient SHAWD system that can somehow hinder the amount of drivetrain loss & hopefully the weight as well. But thats a huge wish.

You're absolutely right, an extra 10-20 Hp for the type-S model would be very foolish on Acura's part. Acura talks about being a Tier 1 luxury auto manufacturer, if that's the case, they need to make the Type-S much more powerful than the base and SH-AWD versions. Mercedes has AMG and BMW has the M, and both models are much more powerful than the base model engines. The Type-S version needs to be head and shoulders above the other models in the lineup. 10-20 extra hp is a waste of time in the Type-S, because I'm sure Acura could squeeze 10+ Hp out of the 3.7 engine anyway. If Acura wants to play with the big boys, they need to make the Type-s more prestigeous. Sure, many of us probably wouldn't be able to afford it, but it would be aimed at a higher (richer) demographic anyway.

Well...
I am at my dealer for some quick warranty fixes and they had quite a few of the new TSXs on the lot. So that reminded me to ask sour the 2009 TL. According to my sales guy, the new TL will come in 2 models, base and technology packages. The base will feature a 280hp fwd platform while the technology will feature a 305hp awd platform. He said we shouldn't be seeing any pics for another few months tho. I guess the Type S is going into its usual hiatus until the 4g mid model refresh.

Just like with the TSX, the grille can be painted...no biggie. The wheels are great. The only thing I don't like, from what I can see, are the tail lights. Overall, I like it (depending on how the rear turns out).

I think the 300-310 figure stated above isn't the Type S statistics but more or less the SHAWD set up of the TL.
I see the 3.5 being in the base TL which would be FWD (thus being cheaper, because it's easier to transport the engine with it's drivetrain)
And since we're getting a Shawd setup, my guess is that the SHAWD will get the MDX/RL engine and the matching drivetrain (which proves that they really messed up the RL's position, i don't think the RL/TL teams were collaborating on this).
And methinks that the as i've said before, the Type S variants get 30 - 50hp Boost (RSX had something in the vicinity of 44hp, and the TL's have had in between 25- 30)
Meaning the Type S with SHAWD would get between 325 - 340....
No?
Edit: The TL picture, dunno it looks nice, but still that Grille...
Edit 2: The Canadian market got heavily hurt for the TSX pricing (i mean our base has CLOTH seats, yet costs 5 thousand more? Our top of the line has the same stuff but costs 8 thousand more?)
Let's see how the TL pricing compares...does anyone else see 44 - 60? Which puts this car right before the RL which starts at 70 Canadian?
Anyone else think this is...well ridiculous?

I jsut want to give you guys my little input first. I like the front end, the grille is not bothering me at all. As a whole it all looks quite intimidating. From what I can see of the back it looks like a G35 sort of with the tails. And the wheels are sick, they look like they came of the Infiniti FX. The shape and th elines are quite nice....but i dont hitnk anything will ever top our 3G's
Was not expecting somethign liek this at all after seeing the TSX and RL. GREAT job again ACURA.!! I look foward to rreading the pages and pages of what everyone has to say!

Holy
Those Fog lights! looks like Jaws ugly head coming down the road!
The rims are sucktastic....
and those tails....holy crapola....looks like a huge hershey smear on the rear quater panel
If they change the rims....the cars appearance would probalby improve three fold.
But those fogs......oh dear god.....they dont look like they belong....looks too blocky and rice a roni....
grill and headlights are not toooo bad, but if the grill gets changed (which they wont) it would definitely improve the look of the car...
my initial opinion...but itll change, and itll grow on me...but right now....i love my 06 that much more.
