just looked threw your thread for the first time, holy crap! any way what i was trying to bring up to you and others who have holes in their strut towers is reinforcements. ive seen alot of torn sheet metal in cars and high spring rates and low ride height are hard on a chassis.

im worried about tearing out my rear trailing arm mounts and rear swaybar mounts with under 300 lb springs in my car. well here is the failure as seen on a totally stock m3, this is very common on cars that are tracked:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28...8/DSC01630.jpg

my solution for this is, that unfortunately i didnt have time to weld up this weekend when i dropped my subframe but ill have it done soon enough.

what the plate does is reinforce whats there by welding onto the bolt holes, and then to the surrounding metal via rosette welds (the little holes) then it gets seam welded around the edges to stop any cracks from running any further then where the outside seam weld is. theise plates i was able to get from a forum supplier for cheaper then i could make them.

i did get the sway bar tabe reinforced. boxing in one side and the bottom. seen here in this pic, the thing with 4 holes in it in front of the yellow subframe bushing, holding the sway bar. this stops lateral movement from deforming or breaking off the tabs the the sway bolts onto.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Picture759.jpg

thing is to do this kind of work you need a mig welder, around .030 guage wire and a co2/argon tank. and not a harbor frieght welder... thats why my welds look like crap on my swaybar reinforcements. and unfortunately for you, u would need to go to a shop with enough insurance to cover frying any of your electronics. chances are slim youll have a problem but it can happen. i could however make you plates to have a shop to weld in, free too as im not happy with the way those holes look.... look into RAI motorsports to weld them in, there local to you, im certainly not very optimistic on what those holes in your strut towers are going to look like after 75k miles.

^^^that is quite a 2nd post and screen name.

I've gotta say thanks for the heads up, but I highly doubt that what we use our cars for and how small a hole we cut will ever have any kind of issue...My cut was barely bigger than a golf ball and will only allow the adjustable balljoint nut a little opening to pop into.

^Exactly. Plus, the holes these guys have in their TL strut towers aren't close enough to any of the upper mounting points, so if we were to track our cars (we won't), none of the stress would be near the hole.

Thanks for sharing that pic and ideas though, that plate is a great idea!

as someone that works with metal every day i can say this is an issue on any car. strut tower deformation is common on just about anything. its incredibly common for strut braces not to fit on most any car thats not brand new. and the thing about shock/spring rebound is it exerts forces on the strut tower and the forces go evenly outword in a circular pattern, for every action their is a reaction. there is alot of potential energy made from the compression of a 500lb spring. every inch of compression exponentially increases the kinetic energy relesed by the springs expansion and multiplied by the shocks rebound rate.(not even considering what nailing a bump stop in a slammed car does...) and not much of that energy reaches the tires contact patch, most of it is exerted to the chassis, and its not threw the control arms, its from its pickup point, ala strut tower. this results in minor flex that is designed into the chassis, thing is with making a hole in a peice of metal it kinda makes it stronger. well basicly more resistant to flex. and this is what you do not want. engeinering 101. dont go drilling holes in a load bearing structure. and yes all the weight of the front of your car is riding on your strut towers. with some of it going to the control arm pickup points.

now im not saying this is a short term issue and something to scare people, but the thing is if you do have a problem with this down the road, the repair it will require will be very large amounts of money. if a crack runs to far and you need to weld in a new strut tower your comming up to a $10,000 repair probably more realistically once you paint everything. and thats hoping when the failure occurs your not driving and damage anything else. at the very least the deformation of your strut towers will screw up your alignment possibly messing with your thrust angle. or just making you unevenly wear tires. and id be surprised if even hagerty collector car insurance would cover something like this.

you could weld in a $10 piece of metal and never have to worry about it, and in the process cover the hole in your stuff so your not flinging dirt from the wheels into your engine bay. and not have people like me questionable of your practices... your guy's cars are to nice to be grouped in with stanceworks folk that try an mount 4 point harnesses to their seat bases.

ive spent enough time around the track and drag strip to see some crazy thing happen, ive seen hondas torque their strut towers off from drag launches, shocks plow threw a strut tower and nail a hood sending a car into the gravel trap. ect. and i dont think you realize that a slammed car on 500lb+ springs on the street hitting pot holes is alot more stress then what is seen on the track where the surface is smooth and consistent. an u dont have a cage to stiffen up the chassis.

TLgirl...I'm with you on that. I go jogging most days at noon during my lunch break, rain or shine. It gets brutally hot but I don't mind it. I remember growing up without having central AC and not using the AC in the car during most summers.

a car battery was in his back seat and got knocked over and leaked battery acid all over his seats so he replaced everything. brand new leather. custom stitching, etc.

There's a guy with a silver 7 Series at the park...he vinyl wrapped his hood, roof and trunk with black CF.

The last 10 times I've seen it, I thought he had crashed and had primered black parts on his car. I hate the look.
