They started the $80 rebate a week after I bought the tires. Coming from 17's I love the more responsive 35's along with the wider tread.

This thread moves wayyy too fast for me to keep up! Rex, those RPF1s look AMAZING! I wouldn't paint them; who knows how long the paint will last with all the heat cycling from the track. And for a cast wheel, powder coating is out of the question.

Someone on here stated that we're all used to seeing the 3G TL in it's luxury form and that seeing it in it's full race form is very nice. I couldn't have said it better myself. The 3G looks amazing as a race car. Who would have guessed.

Also, what Carbotech pads are you running again?? And which tires??

And how are your control arm bushings and other steering/suspension components holding up so far??
I know this has already been addressed before, but I have 17x9 rpf1s on my type-s, and it wasn't easy getting them to fit lol. My wheels have a +22 offset and they BARELY clear the Brembos. I believe Rex has the factory Brembos painted red (judging by the shape of the caliper).

Several issues come with the low offset.

1. Aerodynamics - My wheels "poke out" past the fender, effectively increasing the frontal area. Spinning wheels create a hell of a lot of turbulance and unless you're running a wide-body, I would avoid "poke" at all costs.

2. Hard to control vehicle in the case of a blown out tire.

3. More torque steer (imo more fun to drive , but detrimental to track times).

4. Fender clearance - depends on the size tire you choose, but if you're as low as villo is, i'm pretty sure a 255 tire will rub. I'm not rubbing anymore only because I'm running 245/40R17 and i'm only 1.4" lower than stock. A lot of rules forbid fender cutting, which was required to fit these wheels.

Yes, you get the benefit of a wider track with a lower offset wheel, but imo the pros don't outweigh the cons haha. You're lucky you get to run 17x9 +45 rpf1s on your car, fenda rolla! If I could, I would too! lucky.

You're gonna love the R-S3's...I just tracked with them recently and I was very impressed. Handled flawlessly. Which track are you going to? And what track wheels do you have?

Haha! It's the very, very few times like these that I'm glad I have the Base instead of Type-S!!

I am excited, I have never gone to the track. Been talking with Randy a lot so I am probably going to go with him, not sure which track yet. Your videos are actually one of the main things that has inspired me. I am picking up some 17in RPF-1s this weekend.

I should say I have never taken my car to the track, I did this exotics racing thing about a year ago. Did 21 laps total in a R8, Gallardo 560, and a Murc LP640. That was pretty amazing! I know my car will not compare to that but hopefully it is still fun hehe

Excellent!! I'm very glad my videos helped you plan on taking the plunge into tracking your TL! I noticed you're in SoCal, there are a few tracks you probably already know about in your neck of the woods...Buttonwillow and Willow Springs are pretty close to LA, and Laguna Seca is between LA and San Fran I believe...but ya can't go wrong with either of them!

Keep us updated on when you're going and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!

That moccasin story just confirmed to me that this weight reduction thing can go way too far and yes Tim, you ARE nuts at this point!

Definately not safe, I would only do it to test fit and see what size spacer you need.

By the way, the three right angle corners are going to need special attention. It's not at all level with the other 95% of the frame around the window so I'll need to figure out an alternate way to seal them because a rivet or screw would not work in these areas. don't really need to add anymore rivets or screws or anything, just enough silicon to seal it up tight.
These look really good. Excellent job.

So I signed up for my first track day at Willow Springs on June 1st! It says Friday is for beginners but I looked at the list of other cars going so far, and they are all beasts! I am gonna get destroyed lol. Also my friend wants me to do an autocross at El Toro airfield on June 17th also. Question for fenda, vill, or whoever, how many track days do you guys usually get out of a set of tires/brake pads?

Its so subjective its hard to say. I'm so light my race pads last me multiple seasons damn near and depending on the tire probably around a season or so. but i remember burning thru a whole set of EBC yellowstuff pads in a weekend at near stock weight. it is really hard to put a predicted lifespan on something like that cuz of all the variables

^^^ this...my Carbotechs are still going strong after a full track weekend and daily driving, and I was not easy on my brakes at all on the track. I still have plenty of pad left. And the rear RS3's still have the Ventus words and flame designs on the treads (which are imprinted pretty shallow). The fronts are definitely rubbed off, but still have about 70% left and the rears are barely used up, about 90% left! You're gonna track the RS3's right? And which pads are you going with??

And bro, congrats on signing up!! You're gonna love it and don't worry about the other beasts out there, you saw what our cars are capable of seeing Villo's and my vids! You're gonna be surprised what you're capable of out there! Just go easy the first couple sessions, learn the track, watch plenty of YouTube vids of others on that track and plan what you're gonna do (what gear to be in at what time) and just have fun! And don't go off the track! You need to drive home afterall! And we don't want that beautiful car having any war scars...yet...lol

I see, I kind of figured as much being so many variables and all. Yea tires I am using are the Hankook RS-3s. Pads I have are racing brake et500s. Thanks for the advice, also the Willow Springs track is in Need for Speed Shift game so I can practice it a bit. Too bad all the cars in this game are too fast to compare to mine. I also recently picked up Live for Speed and it has autocross in it, very fun!

Give Forza 4 (Xbox) or Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) a try. Depending on what system you have.

Willow Springs isnt in Forza, unfortunately. Not that a video game is anywhere near the same as real world driving.

Anthracite - Id bring a new set of pads to run on the track, that way you can always swap on a set of good pads for the drive home.

True, just a suggestion. Also, a simulation racing game is the closest to driving. NFS is super unrealistic.

Thanks again for the advice, yea I love racing games but I know they are nowhere close to the real thing. I have Forza and I rented GT5 but yea Willow Springs is not in those. It is in NFS Shift and Shift 2, I am just going to drive around it a few times anyways just to memorize the turns a bit. The track I am going on, Big Willow, is pretty big and very fast. Probably not the best track for my first time lol, should be fun! I am already watching tons of videos on youtube. There is a ton from this course. Some guys have even made instructional videos on how to drive the track which is nice.

Just remember to take it at your own pace. They should go over everything before you even set a wheel on the track too.

Exactly, set your own pace and don't let others intimidate you. As you already know from regular driving, it's easy to want to floor it and end up going too fast. Do practice laps at a normal speed to memorize it and practice taking turns then when you're comfortable bump it up a notch.

Again lots of variables in this and I haven't dialed these in yet for Road Atlanta (yes it's definitely track dependant) but my fronts are around -1.5 to -1.7* and the rears are around -2.6* or so.

Try more like 28-30 cold. If you want the most from your tires you need to measure the tire pressure while hot...If you can, get on track and about mid session, do a hot pit and have someone else take the pressure (as fast as possible so temps/pressures don't fall off) and adjust them to have consistent HOT pressures, then whatever they cool to is what they cool to. I'd aim for around 37psi hot and see how they feel.

finally picked up my own 16' car trailer today. Needs some minor work but it's gonna be so nice to have my own for once. Gonna have to figure out some sort of ramp configuration to get my car safely up onto the trailer but I'm sure I can figure that out no problem.

Now for some tires and I'll be set to hit the track as soon as I move to Omaha.

This might be of some help for your ramp set up. My buddy has a lowered supra with a 18' trailer and uses an f250 as his tow vehicle. Since he's so low, he carries a pair of rhino ramps and drives the rear wheels up on them to angle the trailer for the front lip to clear.

Yeah I've had to do that as well, good tip though. my car's problem is that the front splitter is so far in front of the front axle. makes everything a bit more of a PITA.
