Getting explorer to run sounds great and would offer a large range of opportunities to us that would like to really change the functionality of the nav system.
However, unless it just really isn't pratical at all I think most everybody would really appreciate a hack to bypass the requirement to press the touch screen everytime the system is booted.
In any case, you should definately work on the project as it best fits your needs, and I think I speak for everyone saying thanks for sharing!

Good work Bysin, keep goin!
I agree that you should work on whatever you want... we appreciate anything you share.
However, I will put my vote in for removing the "OK" or "GO" button on the nag screen. That's the only part of it I don't like (the text didn't bother me).
A bonus would be the wallpaper stay visible until the actual map comes up.

I need to take a poll on what people would want on their windows ce desktop in their car, keep in mind I have to recompile the kernel as small as possible..
Wireless Internet (internet explorer)?
Games?
Mp3 player (on the PC card)?
DVD?
etc.

Oh yeah, and kill the OK button.

Actually.. wireless access to transfer mp3s wouldnt be possible because you'd need 2 PC cards to do it.. 1 as a wireless receiver and 1 to write the data too.. but our car only has 1 PC card slot..
You would need to transfer data via the PC card, which doesnt seem too hard.

How would you get the wireless internet to work? Im guessing a bluetooth sync with my treo650 (unlimited data plan) would be an option? Or a wireless card in the pc slot? Guessing the later would be the better option.
My vote is definitely for playing mp3s via pc card slot or maybe a dvd-r full of mp3s, and the ability to play dvd movies. Divx would also be nice if they can be played via a dvd-r full of divx movies! Keep up the awesome work!
I am not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but here goes:
1) Get rid of Nag
2) Play movies on DVD
3) bility to transfer data into and out of Nav (personal addresses, appointments)
4) Pop up notification of daily appointments when system starts
5) MP3 playback from PC card
6) Customizable Trip computer or some way to just display time/date/temp
7) Ability to run nav from PC card instead of DVD and thus reuse of DVD player
8) Wireless Internet sounds useful but cell phone based service? might be too expensive for me!

guys, DVD should def be #1 priority here, if you want MP3s so badly why not just use an iPod? We already have all the hardware needed for DVD, and this would save a lot of people money on a Navi/DVD converter. Bysin if you made a decent DVD mod I would definitely donate 20 bux
What I don't get is with the DVD idea - who is going to watch a DVD for a short drive to/from the grocery store? People who are travelling farther are probably going to be using their NAVI - therefore they can't use the DVD player, am I mistaken?
madmanmax3000 - there is no way to have direct sound for the MP3 from an ipod or any other mp3 player. The best option (as far as I know) is from an FM modulator - and they suck.
Either way, Bysin, keep up the good work. We all appreciate it. Whatever mods you do, make sure they are what you want also - afterall it is your time.

Ahh, forgot this is the TSX site. I was thinking for the TL. oops, my bad. Thats right - I had the snhond3 for my TSX with navi.
I think MP3s is the way to go, but using teh cd player would be best.
Would we be able to use steering wheel controls? Would they appear on the nav with ID3 tags? Not quite sure how the setup would work.
No-nag is huge too
Would take movies as a distant thirsd, but am greatful for whatever can be done.
THANKS!

ya tho DVDs would be awesome for me. Since Juniors aren't allowed parking at my school its first come first serve on the streets around my school. I get there 40 minutes early every morning so I can get a spot close enough to go out for lunch. Having a DVD to watch in the mornings would be sweet. I'm sure there are other people who would have opportunities to watch DVDs

My thoughts on hacked features.
If DVD support was possible the trick is being able process the 5.1 sound through the sound system to get the full experience of the movie and to maximize the sound system. Several people out there have already hack/mod'ed the TL to play movies but if I understand correctly the sound is processed via FM modular or some facsimile.
Not sure if this is something that is possible .... and if it is how much work would it be required to do it...
Granted if there was a way to play the DVD's it would either have to be process via the DVD player in the trunk which would take away the NAVI functionality, unless the PCMCIA port was used somehow.
Or is it possible to use the DVD functionality from the head unit??
What would be killer would be having the option to being able to hold down another touch key like the 'OK' button to bypass the navi and launch another app like an explorer on MP3 player.
My vote is
1) remove the acknowledgement 'OK' button
2) implement an explorer with the possiblity to access the PCMCIA port to access internet.
3) MP3 support
4) DVD support is possible.

Response to prioritization of features:
1) Remove OK button requirement (Nag Text would be fine, actually, if I didn't have to hit OK!)
2) User-customizable "skins" -- I would like an "'05 RL" look'n'feel to my Car's OS!
3) MP3 playback support (in stereo, using all 6 speakers -- possible?)
4) Internet Explorer for use with WiFi or GRPS PC Card or Bluetooth-connected GRPS/Edge phone/modem.
Addiitional thoughts:
Removing the OK nag button would be the greatest contribution because it's fixing a problem that we all share. Every other feature is wanted by some more than others. I think everyone can agree that if we had the option to not hit "OK" every time we booted up our cars, we'd be happy.
I'm wondering how viable mp3 playback is going to be seeing that the NAVI /WinCE output is only in the front 2 speakers, and likely mono. Thoughts around this?
If you're thinking about wireless internet, then definitely think about drivers for a GRPS or EDGE modem using a cellular network. This way, assuming we get a data service from a cell phone service provider like Cingular or Verizon, we could check our webmail or google something no matter where we are -- assuming we're in or near a metro area with cell data coverage!
WiFi is great for the garage... and soon Philadelphia (a 135 sq. mile hot spot in 2006), but I think the killer app would be using a cellular provider to access the 'net from our cars!
And, if you decide to look in GRPS direction, then also consider that for those of us with bluetooth phones, all we'd need is a bluetooth PC Card to access the GRPS or EDGE "modem" within our BT phones... Meaning that the phone would be the modem, and it'd be wirelessly xmitting data to the WinCE system in our cars.
After all, my Nokia 6230 can act as a wireless GRPS modem for my laptop now. It's just that my laptop has a USB port with a BT adapter plugged in. Not sure how you'd get bluetooth into the PC Card slot. I'm sure someone makes one.
So, those are my thoughts. I'd be interested in hearing Bysin's and other people's responses to these ideas.

Wouldn't the nag screen not be a problem if you were to load straight into windows CE? Then you would see the desktop first and then would just load the navi.exe when you would want to run the navi?

I think I'd rather keep the current OS and mod it up then go with a generic WinCE that didn't have the NAVI, HVAC, AUDIO and other screens that I have today.
I guess it boils down to the question: If we do get access to WinCE, what do we lose?

peter ubers on the TL site directly hooked his ipod to the TL, im sure the same rules apply.... he even has XM still operational

wish this guy had a tl cause it already can read DVD's (audio dvdS) ... there must be a way to make it play video without using additional hardware.
I'd vote for either MP3 or DVD in that order.
What'd be really awesome is if you could stick a USB/Firewire pc card into the card slot, and connect that to an iPod or even a notebook drive in a usb/firewire enclosure and be able to control it / have the track names (and even album art) appear on the screen.

Deffinitely DVD!
i dont know why people are so hell bent on MP3 but i guess it would be pretty useful.
me, having a TL, i would go for DVD cause it can already read that format.
people pay over 5 bills just for the convertor alone to attach a dvd player. theres gotta be a way to play with it in the software to allow a region 1 dvd to be played.
bysin.... if you are willing to , id be more then happy to send you copies or the files on the dvd player and see if you can take a look at it and modify the correct one?
IF its even at all possible

you all are talking about hardware related thing that probably cannot be done.
the dvd audio player in the tl is part of the sound system. This is not the same dvd being used for the navi. The navi can obviously read a dvd and perhaps the os and hardware could decode it but is their enough processor horsepower to do this job without skipping? Will it even decode a mp3 at speed (without skipping)? You must admit sometimes it is very slow just running the navigation software.
Someone needs to look at the hardware first.
