Microsoft: Surface News and Discussion Thread
Not sure what I'd do with $25 bucks at a MS store

Or is it like a visa gift card?
Yes, pro doesn't come out for another three months. I think they're waiting for the next intel chips to come out.
Yes, wifi only. The surface guys did a q&a on reddit today and that was one of the questions. They said that 2/3rds of tablet purchased today are wifi only and of the 1/3 that have cellular only have of them are ever activated. So they say 5/6 of tablets don't use cellular.
I don't think they're on display yet, just available for pre order, they drop on 10/26
Here's the reddit AMA, lots of good info in there

From what I read its 30 days as long as the device hasn't been opened or altered what's wrong with that?

here's a good read on the design process of the device. Really gets you to like this product.
I'd honestly be more interested in the pro version, so you get to use the full power of office. Which I think could be a big deal. But looking at the price of the RT, I think it will be too expensive.

Probably get an Xbox game for my kids.I wish it was a visa gift card, but its a voucher for their store. Unfortunately, it expires October 25th, before some of the more hyped video games come out.
They were giving out a free T-shirt too, but I think you'd feel silly wearing it.
Microsoft's initial stock of Surface RT devices has sold out in the United States. The 32GB base model, at $499, sold out earlier in the week, but all stock has now been depleted with a wait time of within three weeks rather than a guaranteed October 26th delivery.
Microsoft reportedly building 3 to 5 million Surface tablets this quarter
http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/16/3...mor/in/2859835
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer may not have seemed serious about selling the company's Surface tablets, describing them as "just a design point" that the company "may sell a few million" of over the next 12 months, but it looks like the software giant is serious about Surface. The Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft has placed orders to manufacture between 3 and 5 million Surface tablets in the fourth quarter.
Mass production of the devices reportedly began earlier this month, and the company appears to be preparing to take pre-orders for Surface soon. Microsoft's first Surface ad aired on US TV earlier this week, alongside similar ads for Windows 8. Suppliers who spoke to The Wall Street Journal claim that the 3 to 5 million figure is similar to the orders placed for the Kindle Fire tablets and Nexus 7 by Amazon and Google respectively.

You read it wrong. The website ship date was always accurate but some got an email saying that their order that was supposed to ship on oct 26th had been delayed a week, that was an error. The website is still an accurate ship date

I'm sure there wasnt much in stock. There seems to be a lot of people that are waiting for initial reviews and a lot that also wont buy it
but a good amount will i think. I dont get why a LOT of people are saying its way overpriced.... that seems to be the biggest thing against it.

yea it is expensive... but thats with the bundle, its actually $120 standalone haha.
But then again it is 4mm thick and it also acts as a smart cover. The magnetic clips are strong enough to hold the the surface even if you let it fall. At least somewhere i read. So its not like they cheaped out on it. Kinda helps justify a ltl bit of the price. Not the whole thing though.

Apparently PC Mag released their review of the Surface before the embargo was lifted and then pulled it........but not before google cache saw it.

It's only the first page of the review but they gave it a 4/5 "excellent" rating.

Conclusion
In terms of its hardware and operating system, the Microsoft Surface with Windows RT is a very good product. It's very light, and powerful enough to run a version of Windows, so it's very attractive to Windows early adopters as well as business users who have plans to migrate to Windows 8. It's powerful enough to be a daily carry device for work, always with you on your commute across the state or across the country. It shares some programs and its main interface with Windows 8, which is a boon, provided you get used to using the new Windows UI. Users who haven't yet tried Windows 8 will have to get used to the new way of doing things, but since Microsoft has mandated that all new PCs come with either Windows 8 or Windows RT, you'll have to start using the new UI on new Windows PCs and tablets eventually.
So should you buy a Microsoft Surface instead of an iPad or Android tablet? If you use Microsoft Office for work or school, then it's a no-brainer: Get a Microsoft Surface (or one of the other upcoming Windows RT tablets). Even though Pages and QuickOffice are pretty good programs, you really can't beat a real copy of Office when your work is on the line. If you use Office programs constantly, the Surface is the tablet and laptop replacement your inner road warrior has been searching for. Discounting Office, the Windows Store's limited selection holds us back from giving the Surface an unequivocal recommendation, since the iTunes Store and the various Android stores have significantly more vast collections of apps. There's no doubt that the most popular apps will be ported over to Windows 8 and Windows RT, but when that will happen is still up in the air. If there's an app you can't possibly live without, then you should check if it's on the Windows Store before plunking down your money for the Surface. It's because of the limited selection in the Windows Store that we can't give the Microsoft Surface the tablet Editor's Choice over the Apple iPad or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 . But we see the potential. If you're a tech pioneer or someone who appreciates well executed design, then you probably have already put the Microsoft Surface on order. In that case, enjoy.

This is something I wanna see succeed so i hope microsoft does good with the surface in the future
Overall, it seems the reviews are all saying the same thing. Great hardware but software needs to mature a little. Exactly what I was expecting from this device. The question becomes, are devs gonna spend the time to create apps for the RT version and just invest in the Pro version. I guess only time will tell. Personally, I'm interested in the Pro version but I'm gonna wait it out.

I think there's a couple issues for why there's some bugs, first this is a brand new CPU architecture for Windows (much like when Apple released the first iPhone or when the G1 came out) so there's probably still some kinks to be worked out but overall it's working well and they'll fix that over time.
2nd, developers all have new apps and they haven't been able to test their apps against these ARM based tablets so they can fix any performance issues, that will also be remedied over time.
I've yet to see any real performance issues on my desktop except for an occasional app crash. Though it's a hyper-threaded quad core....
I was at CompUSA today and they had one of the Acer 10.1 Windows RT tablets on display. I spent a good ten minutes on it and it worked well. I tried out all the gestures, took me a little bit to figure out the force close gesture (swipe from top of screen all the way down), wasn't able to seem to get it working in portrait mode. Not a bad device very thin and light, I liked it.
You know i think it could be that MS did some hardcore marketing in NYC and the bay area. At least from what I read a while back. From subway stations to bus stops, there were ads of the surface everywhere.

Seems like the in thing is to lower stock to create hype. Apple is no exception.
wait until they announce sales numbers at the next quarterly meeting, if they do that
they've opened a M$ holiday store not too far from my work near union square in SF.
