Microsoft: Surface News and Discussion Thread

Looks like they're not leaving Windows 8 up to OEMs only. They want to make a Google Nexus-like device to show off the Windows 8 platform.

This is a 180 of what they've been. They originally said that Google's Nexus devices were going to alienate Google from their partners....

Q: What is a PVD finish?

A: PVD stands for physical vapor deposition which is a manufacturing process that creates a very durable finish which looks like highly polished brass. PVD finish is commonly used for bathroom fixtures and entry hardware which needs to be highly tarnish resistant.

"But we know some people prefer to have a cover. It's an integral element of the PC. A magnetic connector." Oh boy, this looks familiar a bit.

"When we looked at the Surface cover, we challenged ourselves to do more."

We said, why not do something with this surface? We made it a full multitouch keyboard." Whoa, people are hooting.

^That is bad ass!!!!

THey're making an ARM and Intel version!

"A Surface for Windows RT, and one with Intel chips for full Windows."
"This is surface for Windows 8 Pro."
"The Windows ecosystem has always been about choice."
"Less than 2 lbs, less than 14mm — but it's a full PC."
The Intel Surface has a different, higher res display. ClearType Display.

Looks like the Intel version also has pen support

"This surface has two digitizers. One for touch, one for digital ink. It sees the proximity of the pen and stops taking hand inputs."

The pen magnetizes to the body of the tablet.

"If you want to unlock the highest res that this supports, we have a DisplayPort. I have a full workstation with the power of a PC."

"What if you prefer tactile keys? We have another product — the Type Cover. I can touch type on this as fast as I can type on any keyboard. Full trackpad with clicking buttons. I'd like to pull all of the family together."

"Surface for Windows RT, Surface for Windows Pro, and the touch covers." There are some Microsoft folks just straight up screaming in celebration at these announcements.

Well I said I was going to buy a Windows 8 tablet and use along with my iPad, I think it's definitely going to be one of these two. Now do I want ARM or Intel.....

The keyboard has an accelerometer and know when it's been folded behind the tablet and I'm assuming disables input

"Surface for Windows RT available in 32GB and 64GB — priced to competitive rates with ARM tablets."

"Intel version will have higher storage capacities... also priced to compete. So, no idea."

So they don't know or feel it's too early to say. Maybe they don't want to force their OEM partners into a lower price range by announcing theirs today. They'll let OEMs decide their prices for their tablets and then MS will match them. Still don't want to step on partners toes too hard.

IMO this was a necessary move for MS. They couldn't just leave the success of Windows 8 tablets to their OEM partners who have a history of making mediocre hardware.

This blows away anything I've seen from any Windows 8 OEM so far.

If I were an OEM I'd be pretty pissed right about now. Surface like a good device.

With this be Zune-tastic?

We've been down this road before....a product that seams to be better than it's Apple counterpart.....only to fall by the wayside....because Apple is "cool" and M$...not so much.

MS didn't put much effort into the Zune they entered that market just as it was starting to die, they knew that. The tablet market is here to stay for quite a while at least and they need to be competitive, they will drop billions into it.

Bad Analogy.

If they'll enter the tablet market what's to stop them from entering the phone market.....

They're announcing the next version of Windows Phone in 3 days. What if a phone was developed alongside this tablet.....

They need a "super phone" to push Windows Phone as badly as they need this tablet....

Stay Tuned

Microsoft's first Zune hardware launched in late 2006, around five years after the initial Apple iPod hit the market and less than a year before the iPhone changed the smartphone industry. Former Microsoft executive Robbie Bach, in charge of Zune at the time, says he would skip portable media players if he could launch Zune again. "The portable music market is gone and it was already leaving when we started," admitted Bach at an entrepreneurs' event in Seattle last week. "We just weren’t brave enough," he says, accepting that Microsoft ended up chasing Apple without a compelling reason for consumers to purchase Zune hardware.

I don't think so. They mentioned seamless lines when talking about the kickstand

"Putting a kickstand in this product breaks seamless lines, but we needed to do it. We couldn't take chances. Take a look at these three hinges you see on the product. They are custom, and they were spec'd to feel and sound like a high end car door."
"When you close it, it just goes away."
"We really wanted to get the sound right, so you get that visceral feeling, that emotional attachment. It's there when you need it, and goes away when you don't."
