Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread
over the weekend my phone slipped out of my hand and the screen broke when it hit the ground. I think I have 1 year warranty on the screen but I am not sure if it applies since I broke it. I will check if it's covered by the warranty offcourse but does anyone know where i can get a repair kit for it, that's legit? I saw some on ebay but they range from 30$ to 100$, and I am not sure what to get.
I just jailbroke my 3GS and have cydia, installous and blackrain, now what? I don't know how to use either of them, and nothing seems different about my phone now.
I need to check with my friend, he also showed me how to change all my settings including 3G and some other crap from some shortcut, but now I can't find it.
I feel like an elderly, techno-illiterate parent

any guides or websites for jailbroken iPhones? I'm trying to learn as much as I can without having to bother my friend again.
one question I have now is how to do that 5x5 grid of apps instead of a 4x4 grid

New AT&T plan to come into effect monday you can sign up for...
unlimited calling AND data for 99 a month, does not include texts of course.
This is a $30 dollar cheaper plan than the prior unlimited plan, which is AT&Ts answer to Verizons new cheaper plans.

I assume I have to wait until my current contract is up...?
It's called FiveIRows. You need: Five icon dock, five column springboard and FiveIRows GUI... All from Cydia.
Not sure. I tried making my custom ipsw file with pwnage tool and it kept failing at the dfu stage. Tried blackrain and it just got stuck on geohot's mugshot. Downloaded a new ipsw and went at it with pwnage tool again (this time with the iTunes helper process killed), still failed. Downgraded and it worked on the my first attempt (with iTunes helper killed).
(I'm on a ppc mac)
If you have installous then you need to change the setting to sync cracked apps, you also need to download AppSync through Cydia. Even then, your cracked apps are not guaranteed to take so use caution...

hmm... don't have any cracked apps yet, at least I don't think so. My friend did the initial setup at first and all I did was download a few free apps on Cydia and got themes/skins for my phone. still works.... but I'll heed that caution when I do start getting cracked apps
I wonder if they will come out with an unlimited family plan?
I read the lastest rumor that os4.0 is out there being tested and the next iPhone will have a 5mp camera with possilbly a flash and oled screen
sounds more like a wish list to me

Last I heard grumblings for were a 5mp camera and they testing LED flashes. And 4.0 being tested but not released in beta because it has too much in the way of revealing things about the tablet.

I bought the screen+digitizer off ebay for like $50 and fixed it myself.
it's "ok". Don't expect DV-quality film, but it's not bad. It's more like a "oh hay, we heard you guys wanted a video camera on your iPhone, well here it is" sort of deal instead of a dedicated, super high quality camera that would be one of the main selling points of the 3GS
here's a sample of the quality:

Its best when you get the video off the phone via iphoto and its not as compressed.
When you keep the video on the phone and email it and post it etc from the phone it compresses the shit out of the video to make it easier to upload.
good points. I just watched the video again on my phone, and it does look better, and it is a phone after all, not a dedicated camcorder. The framerate is quite a bit smoother than most other phones, that's for sure.
I'll have to look into this iphoto deal
stupid Youtube

Thing about Apple is that they are very polished and neat looking, but they are never cutting edge when it comes to hardware. Their whole product line is usually a step behind when it comes to hardware functionality. Almost as if they put too much R&D into aesthetics. I don't expect anything groundbreaking from Apple, but they will most likely catch up with the rest of the players (N1, Droid), maybe have a snapdragon and a OLED screen, but buy that time the N1 will have had them for 6 months already and Google will probably be prepping phones with 2Ghz processors.
Look at the past iPhone updates, it's never anything spectacular:
3G capability - Everyone and their mother already had a 3G capable phone at that point.
3GS - Just faster processing, and that processor is outdated at this point.
Apple's media capability (software), App store, and ease of use are what make it such a strong device and high seller. I think this device is going to be a catch-up update, then next year, with the release of 4G networks we will see a major update from Apple.

here's hoping for no OLED screen. I've heard nothing good about them outside in the sun.
I'd like to see something groundbreaking in the way of battery life, other than that I have no need to upgrade from my 3G.
I am excited to see what OS 4.0 brings.

both vids and photos get compressed when "sent".
Apps being able to run in the background FTW!
