so, there's an resident apple hater, and a resident apple cocksucker. I think there's a good balance, imo.

forgive typos or errors, I'm typing on an iPhone.

And if it was an iPad you'd have a almost full size keyboard.

blind love of a company i see.. there are PLENTY of people who thought this was going to be obsolete even before release, and now that we KNOW it is, get over it.

apple could release a bag of poo and call it iPoo and some of you would buy it for $400.

also, i have an iphone, and i love it.. there's no company hatred here.. the device is a rip-off and has no appeal over other products apple has released other then its Huge-ness.

and when i say hard drive, i mean memory... excuse me for not being technologically correct.

Wait, tell me more about this "iPoo". I am interested in buying this.

Does it do Poo in HD?
Can it Multi-Poo?
Are there Poo-SB connectors?
Can it run the iWipe app?
Does it have enough storage so that I don't have to dump the iPoo more than twice a day?
Can the iPoo handle the iPee protocol?

I need answers, dammit! Not rumors!

unfortunately you'll have to wait for the update or hack it like most of us apple users to get any benefits from it.

Honestly, no Apple hate here. To each their own; but, seriously, please tell me that Apple enthusiasts are not a little underwhelmed by this thing.

Listen to Pandora and check e-mail at the same time: No
Flash, or planned support of Flash in the next two years: No
Required purchase of an additional data plan from AT&T to use 3G: Yes
USB or SD inputs: No

They are marketing it as the "ultimate" multimedia device, yet it won't play a majority of web video or animation, no multitasking, no camera, no support for external devices, etc., etc. Sounds like a novelty device to me

I have an iPod Touch and it's been collecting dust since I picked up the Moto Droid.

I don't see why people are complaining about the data service.
Yes the kindle gets it for free, but look at what you can do with it. Pretty much only read/download books.

As for the camera, I don't see a regular camera working well with it. A front facing one for video chat yea, but not a regular one.
Just imagine holding and using a camera the size of a magazine.

If I had an iPod touch and got any touch screen smart phone w/ data service, I wouldn't use the iPod either.

Actually a front facing one for video chat wouldn't work well if it can't tilt. You'd have to hold it straight in front of you for it to work.

It's an e-book reader and was marketed as such.

The iPad was marketed as the end-all-be-all device, and is nothing more than an iPod with data service. I think that's the biggest problem people have with the iPad.

The iPad is being marketed as ebook reader as one of it's functions.

Why the hell are you still comparing this thing to computers? It's as if you haven't read all the other posts in here about how this thing is NOT a computer and they KNOW that it doesn't do all those things. The market they are targeting DONT CARE about these things that you've listed. You said yourself that "Apple enthusiasts...." Listen. They're going after people that have never owned a computer in their lives! Stop already! They knew that Apple enthusiasts were going to criticize this thing. And guess what? The Apple enthusiasts are doing exactly what they thought they'd be doing. Are they listening to you? Nope. And I don't know why I am either.

Do you hear anything at all? Or do you just come in here randomly and tell us all why you think this thing sucks? I think you secretly love this thing but just have a hard time admitting that. Hmmmmm. Anything else you want to tell us?

No no no. It was not marketed as a end-all-be-all device. That's what everyone 'thought' it was going to be. That's the beauty of it all. They came out with something completely unexpected, targeting a group that does not include everyone that is criticizing the thing.

So? Are there moral quidelines Apple is supposed to follow? Can't put out a device unless us computer geeks are gonna like it? Do you think the target demographic they are marketing this towards would like it if it was full of what 'we' wanted it to have? What about being nice to them?

Dont hold your breath waiting for Apple to apologize for not being nice either.

Calm down man I wasn't comparing it to a computer. Honestly, I was comparing it to the iPhone/iPod Touch--which it essentially is (just a giant version). Basically, I was just pointing out that besides the e-reader, this product is really much ado about nothing

Apple wants you to compare it favorably to whatever you were planning on buying. If someone thinks it's an excellent dishwasher alternative, Apple wins.

Anyone care to wager on the percentage of people naysaying here that were equally unimpressed in the original iPhone announcement thread on AZ, but have since purchased one? (I'd would probably be one of them.)

I think it's worthwhile for everyone to express their opinion on what the iPad is/isn't but there's really no point in arguing those positions so vehemently. None of us have actually used the device and whether or not it will prove a worthy success is to be determined soon enough.

Using history as a lesson, and adding a sampling of the passion exhibited by both camps here, odds are the iPad will have a significant impact. I'd wager that an examination of history would show that most were wrong about the iPhone, and most are likely to be wrong again.

I for one share some unmet expectations of what the iPad would be. Nonetheless I'm bullish that it will be a commercial success and prove a revolutionary change in computing. I'm enjoying dreaming up apps to design & build for the device harnessing means of interaction that are only now likely to be available to the masses.

… besides, you can get behind the wheel for only $499, it's not like they're asking for your first, second, and third born. I've got a closet full of PDA's that cost twice as much and never really did anything but look impressive until they were obsolete by the following Christmas.

For me, when the iPhone first came out I knew i wanted one right away.
It's cause it was cool looking and I liked the fact that it had a more full fledged browser, because at that time I had a palm t|x and that browser sucked balls. And cause of the data plan letting me get online anywhere.

I guess I'm the opposite: I was impressed by it, but didn't buy one. I probably didn't post anything in the iPhone thread here, but I do remember first seeing the keynote from a link in a Sarlaac post. I was pretty blown away, to be honest. No, I never bought one, but I had the sense that it was a revolutionary product.

I would never expect Apple to follow a moral guideline that they didn't author. But, more in response, I am getting a little tired of Apple defining how things are going to be. It's not so much that they are targeting a different demographic, it's more that they are saying "this is the device, now, become the demographic." The people that are already in the demographic have no problem with it. Those outside have to choose whether to dumb themselves down to this next level or risk being left behind. Judging by the rebellion in the community, it doesn't seem people are willing to make that leap.

Apple is only concerned with the end result, which is probably why they are so polarizing. And to have a corporate figure, who has been elevated through reverence to god-like status, tell me how I'm going to use my phone, how I'm going to browse the Internet, how I'm going to expand my options on my devices I purchase... that doesn't sit well with me. Especially when it's delivered in a tone that says "we know what you need better than you do"

Apple used to be different. Back in the Apple IIe days (when I was an Apple fan), it was all about customization. My first Apple was an Apple IIc and I hated it. It had no expandability. Starting with the IIc, then the Mac, it became clear that Apple perceived having less options to be equitable to having greater control over the experience and (if you want to be a conspiracy-theorist) the user.

There. That's my say. And like everyone else in this thread, it's a personal opinion.

Seriously though, the amount of closed thinking present in this thread is unbelievable.

Can you people who already hate the iPad not think of some truly revolutionary ways that it will change the way we interact?
