This wasn't designed purely as a stand alone device. It was still designed to sync with your laptop or desktop.
Apple doesn't want you using Pandora, they want you to buy music from itunes. Apple doesn't want you to use Hulu, they want you to buy shows off iTunes.

Simple as that, can't say I blame them.

The storm was made to complete with the iphone and failed.

Do you get it yet? Wake up !!!!

Do you really think that 90% of the population are computer geeks that care about multi tasking and all that other crap? Nope. It's more like 10, maybe 20. It's that 80% to 90% that are being targeted by this thing. How do you call that a limited market?

I hate to blow smoke up anyones ass, but this may very well become a model for marketing classes. Make everyone think you're going after a particular market segment. Then at the last minute swing your guns 180 degrees in the other direction and fire!
I get it, you want a quick and peppy solution to browse the net and check emials with a decent sized screen. Edit: and apps, cant forget the apps. And they will sell like hot cakes.

Pandora and Hulu are so popular because they are free. You have to pay for music and shows in iTunes.

Yes he did. They tried filling that gap with netbooks but they failed. Why? Because the netbook is still a computer, and it's completely missing the market that's made up of people that don't want a computer but do want the internet.
That's where he's gonna hit a home run with this.

Bingo! You said it better than I did. If someone comes out with an Android tablet (or the upcoming Chrome OS) that allows all this stuff along with multi-tasking, this will look dated very quickly.

Yeah, I get what your saying. Remember youtube changed their whole format to work on the iphone. Possibly hulu will strike a deal to do that same. They have an app for mac desktops.

And there is a pandora app for the iphone. The question is can it play in the background like itunes.

So the target audience is for people who want a simplified computing experience. That's totally in line with Apple's philosophy. Entering this nirvana comes at a premium price. That also is in line with Apple's philosophy.

It really is surprising that Apple has kind of a liberal, hippie personality, but the actual experience is limiting and controlling - for your own good of course.

Right again... this whole thing hinges on the closed Apple ecosystem. If you live in it completely, this works great. If you want other options, there are some glaring limitations.

True, and we all know thats how apple has always ever really designed their products. And because of it they always just work. I know PC fan boys get their panties in a twist because this means they can't go in customize every little thing. But I'll gladly give some of it up to have products that work, work well, and work together with ease.

I think a lot of people are adopting this mindset as well. Apple moved themselves up the ladder pretty damn quick from a company that only used to have a tiny 5% stake in the computing world.

Apple dominates the market in small media devices (iPod, iPhone), but has a tiny market share in the desktop and laptop market because most people don't want the limitations despite the better user experience.

Apples tiny share especially in laptops has grown quite a bit in the last 5 years. I dont think its quite so tiny anymore.

Dont know about you but every time I walk by an apple store they are packed with people. Every display computer always has someone playing on them.

Agreed. I wouldn't call Apple's share in the Laptop market "Tiny" and while it may have been a niche product back in the day, even everyday computer users want Apple laptops.

Back in college when I used to mess around with film editing/rendering, I'd loath ridiculous Adobe Premier rendering times (around 8 hours for a 15 minute shoot) on my PC while an Apple laptop (Powerbook back then I think?) did it in a fraction of that time. I made myself believe at that time that I would only want a Mac for video purposes but wouldn't like it due to the lack of compatability with PC software. Those days are long gone now.

As for desktops, I'm not sure since I've never shopped for one.

Yes, iphone can't multi task. Hence no running apps unless the app is in the foreground.

The only reason push email works well for BB devices in the corporate world is because companies that rely on them run their own Blackberry Enterprise Server boxes. Talk to anyone that routinely deals with Blackberry devices using cell carriers as a mail provider and you'll likely find the BBs being just as susceptible to just as much crap as any other device.

Their desktops are trickier.

They've positioned their towers in to a very Pro user category and priced them as such.

That leaves the imacs which I LOVE LOVE LOVE, but some people are stuck on the all in one idea.

So, there is still the whole build and upgrade your own tower section of people.

again, thats not 100% true, because you CAN run ipod in the background of several apps.

That is SOME form of mutli-tasking

Yes yes, I know. The phone and mail apps also run in the background. When i say multi task, I mean that developers can't make their apps run in the background unless Apple says they can.

The only time I've really, really wanted multi-tasking is when I'm playing something on my GBA app and hadn't saved for a while, and just did something crazy like beat a boss, and someone gives me a call..... OMFG &^$%#@^%^#$

The more I think about it.... the more I think Jobs probably announced this product poorly. Instead of calling it a "netbook killer" or even comparing it to a netbook, they should have just approached it as a new class of device... i.e. a "portable internet/entertainment tablet."

I can see atleast a dozen other companies that will probably try to compete with the IPad in a similar shape or design. And chances are, those other companies will fall short... sort of like how all these phones are trying to compete with the Iphone. To date, there has been no Iphone killer.

If apple does continue their trend of improving future designs, perhaps the IPad can be successful.

The numbers disagree with you. From CNET on July 16, 2009:

According to research firm IDC, Apple has dropped from the No. 4 purveyor of laptops in the U.S. last year to No. 5 this spring. The firm estimates that Apple has shipped 12.5 percent fewer laptops than the same time last year, even as it maintained its 7.6 percent market share.

Dont let a fact like we're in a recession factor into that at all I'm guessing all laptop sales dropped.

Regardless of how laptop shares are...How does that really honestly factor into this product?

It's like saying: "Oh, BMW controls the entry level luxury market for sedans and THEREFORE, their upcoming crossover will dominate."

It's clear to me that it is not a laptop replacement...so, let's not talk about it like one. It's something that is clearly for a niche market and well, if it does well...great! Because the competition will sure to follow and voila, innovation from competition...

I wasn't pointing out the sales drop, I was pointing out the fact that Apple's market share is still tiny (less than 8%) and NOT growing (as you guys were claiming from your observations). Toshiba passed them for goodness sake.

You may have missed the context. I made the point that Apple dominates small hand-held devices, but has a very small market share when it comes to something you put on (or under) a desk. Sarlaac countered that Apple's notebook market share wasn't so tiny anymore, and I responded.

In other words, people expect more from a desktop/tabletop/laptop device than they do from a pocket device. Apple chose to market this as a multi-use competitor to the Netbook, and they don't do well in that space (market-share wise) because consumers don't want the closed Apple ecosystem in that context.
