That's weird. The HTC Evo doesn't use AMOLED. It uses a regular LCD. I think the author got confused with the HTC Incredible. Regardless, the HTC Incredible is on backorder due to the shortage of AMOLED screens. Samsung probably made a dick move and focused on their Super AMOLEDs for their Galaxy S and told HTC they don't have any AMOLEDs left. HTC has started using Sony LCDs in exchange for the HTC Incredible so there should be some differences in color reproduction in the new HTC Incredibles.

The HTC Evo shortages, on the other hand, are due HTC not being able to keep up with demand on the Novatel LCD screens. There's actually 2 screens out for HTC right now because they couldn't keep up with the original screens. I think the first earlier phones had a Novatel LCD screen whereas the newer builds have Epson LCD screens.

Each screens have there strong points and weak points. One does whites better while the other does blacks better. But to be honest the only way you would really tell the difference is if you are comparing to Evo's side by side with different lcd screens. Im not to worried cause it will be out of sight and out of mind.

Yeah. I don't think its noticeable for the EVO 4G as its moving from LCD to LCD. At least in that video they didn't look that much far off and I actually liked the newer screen. However, in terms of the 30 fps cap HTC placed on the screen, the ROM devs have only been successful in removing it on the newer, Epson, screens so far. Although, I believe they're almost able to uncap it on the old, Novatek (correction from my last post), screens:

For the Epson screens (Newer screen):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763

For the Novatek screens (Older screen):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711964

Article on what they're trying to achieve:
http://www.androidguys.com/2010/06/2...g-30fps-limit/

Of course, that shouldn't be a deal breaker, but according to HTC, the fps cap is there for the HDMI and that it was intentionally placed. Meaning it won't ever go beyond 30 fps even when its capable of doing so. So you might see some lag when swiping left and right in the home screen, for example, and during gaming because it has lesser cushion room when it starts to drop frames. Now, if you don't game, you might never notice it:

http://www.androidguys.com/2010/07/0...e-restriction/

As far as moving from the AMOLED to the LCD in the Incredible, that might be a different story. AMOLED just have a better contrast and color saturation, uses less battery, but has crappy visibility in sunlight. LCD on the other hand, has better visibility in sunlight and is an older tech. Gonna have to wait and see what happens when the new batch of Incredibles come in.

can you recommend a game to test the lcd. I know that cyanogen is working on a fix to up the 30fps.

For non-rooted and rooted devices:
I use the ddms.bat file inside the Android SDK. Plug your phone in with the USB cable. Open up the folder where you extracted the SDK. Under the "Tools" folder, scroll down to a file called "ddms.bat". Double click it. (Note: It needs to have Java installed. In my case, I had to copy the whole Java folder into "C:\Program Files\" as I am using Windows 7 x64 and it installs the Java files in the x86 folder only for some reason.)

1. Click on your phone with your serial number "HTLXXXXXX"
2. Click on "Device" on the top
3. Screen Capture
4. Save the file anywhere.

It saves all the screens in a png format. You can upload them on your flickr fine.

For rooted devices:
You can install "ShootMe" and shake the phone to save a screenshot. I believe it saves it on your SD Card. Haven't used this program but from what I read thats what it does.

Let's see some screens.

This is so cool. I've always wanted to build a Car PC but how about Android instead?
HTC Droid Incredible TV-Out to my Range Rover Sport. This is the ultimate carputer ; replacing the built in OEM NAV using Google Android. Using the TV-Out, I connect to a GVIF adaptor that allows me to bypass my Car's built in OEM.

Gonna have to look into something like this but for 7" monitors...

Thought I'd share this cool update with ADW.Launcher created by Anderwebs found in the market or on his website:

Anderweb's Website: http://jbthemes.com/anderweb/
Paper Theme: http://themes.piratemedia.tv/2010-07...tem-adw-theme/

Recently, he just added the ability to theme his launcher and Eliot Stocker created this awesome Paper Theme:

Home Screen:

App Drawer:

Its pretty cool home replacement and the best thing is about it is, you DON'T have to be rooted to try it out! ADW.Launcher also has a lot of cool features too like changing the amount of desktop screens. Number of icons per row on the desktop. (If you look, I have 5 icons per row, but you can do more if you have a bigger screen like the Evo.) You can resize the widgets. And a whole bunch of other cool features.

The icons that are hand drawn were manually made by him and they're all functional. But if you have an app not in those icons he made then you just see your regular icon. Also, widgets haven't been modified but that would be cool if it came in the future updates. There's 4 themes so far and they're on his website to check out.

Here's a good benchmark comparison of the Evo 4G, Nexus One, Droid X, and Samsung Captivate.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRK2stnV3Wg
Source: http://www.androidcentral.com/att-sa...icsgaming-test

Note that the Nexus One is on Froyo hence the 5x increased Linpack scores due to JIT. Once all of the phones get Froyo, they'll be averaging around the same amount in Linpack, even more with the Droid X and Samsung. Also, note the color reproduction and the glare in the other phones compared to the Samsung Super AMOLED screen.

Some people are saying they've been able to get the Samsung Captivate today even though its not out until Sunday and it is for $350 without a contract on AT&T!

The Nexus One is definitely holding its own. And the good thing about it is its Google's baby and Cyanogen's primary phone so who knows how long of a support line you'll be getting with it. You'll most probably get Gingerbread first before all the other phones get it. It's definitely worth however much you paid for it. I'm still debating on whether to pick one up or get the Samsung. Maybe if I can find a good price on a Nexus One on eBay in the next couple of weeks I'll grab one. Although, a few of the devs just picked up the Samsung Vibrant so I'm kinda optimistic about its support line. If Cyanogen picked one up I'll be picking one up for sure though due to the superior specs.

The devs are moving fast. Its only a matter of time before they have a full, optimized build coming. I'm sure it'll be out soon.

^ True true, the Nexus definitely still has a long lifetime. I was thinking about the Samsung as well seeing that newer Motos have a locked bootloader (who know if and how long it will take to crack it. Peeps are worried about the EFUSE but that has been proven to be part of the Milestone and original Droid chipset as well so it might be blown out of proportion.... time will tell i guess). It's funny that even though like the Nexus, a rooted device like the Droid is still is one of the top tiered phones even though new Android phones are coming out like every week!

I think the Nexus One will be around for a while. They're about to add the FM Radio to it and I believe they're trying to add the DLNA support found in the Samsungs. If that's not great support from the modder community, then I don't know what is. lol.

The Droid has a good backing because its from Moto and the fans they built from the RAZR days. To top it off, they have the best advertising in my opinion, out of all the phones out there. You rarely see any Android commercials out there and the ones out there put out by other companies *cough*T-Mobile, Sprint*cough* are not as good and as convincing as the 'Droid Does' campaign.

Samsung has just recently sold 1 million of their Galaxy S worldwide:
Did we mention that Samsung has sold over 1 million Galaxy S devices around the world?
Source: http://twitter.com/Samsungtweets/status/18636938067

That figure is without the recently released, Vibrant, upcoming Captivate on Sunday, Epic 4G, Fascinate and all the other Galaxy S phones they're planning to sell in the other markets. They're aiming for 10 million sold and I think they'll be able to get that amount once they've released to all the markets. The custom ROM people are already pushing out custom ROMs for them. They said the root was easy since Samsung's recovery allows flashing of any zip file which normally requires a custom recovery in other Android phones. (Maybe they are serious about supporting this phone for the custom modders?)

If I were Samsung, I would take advantage of the iPhone debacle and start going full force with their phones. A lot of people on the AT&T Facebook page are actually planning on selling their iPhone 4s based on today's 'Apple conference' and buying an unsubsidized Captivate and make about $300-400 cause of the cheap price of the Captivate.

The Vibrant came out yesterday and T-Mobile did a piss-poor job of advertising the new phone. (I guess they're really not trying to gain any customers?) A lot of people on the Android forums I visited said none of the workers even knew what the phone was. I think that contributes to what makes the Droid sell so well because Verizon focuses all their time on the Droid, so their workers and the general public knows what it is.

I am intrigued to see what happens in the Android market b/c there are so many players on the field right now and the companies are allowing mods to the phones themselves (Droid, excepted)...

...Apple on the other hand has always been unto itself and pretty stingy with mods to their OS...but has alot of peeps in bed with them for apps...

Its gonna be a crazy (and fun) 365 days so hang on tite!

Yeah through HTC Sync. But if you know where to look you can still find it. And if you can't, there's always ADB which they can never block because its needed to develop for Android.

I have to say that the first Droid commercials made me feel like I was a kid again watching a commercial for a sweet Super Soaker! Droid definitely has a great marketing campaign around it.

^Yea!! So sick. I hope they keep these coming (why wouldn't they) because that last one could totally be a kick ass movie! That would be sweet if they kept continuing that one.
