It's very simple to manually flash a official Google update usually, you don't need to be rooted.

After having the Galaxy S, I'm sure the S2 will be a fine phone. I'm impressed with the 8meg camera WITH A FLASH, but the rest of the mechanics don't overwhelm the S1 to make the jump. Of course it is running Gingerbread, and even though the S1 upgraded from Ecclair to Froyo, I doubt the S1 will be provided with Gingerbread.
What is a little letdown on the S2 is the frame/case... too much plastic. It doesn't even say Galaxy S on back or anywhere. At least the Samsung Eternity would glow different colors around the perimeter of the case when a call came.
The only things that will make me jump early are: 1) Better battery life and 2) a real home button.
I'm guessing that in the middle of a 2 year contract with ATT, they'll sell the S2 at $599.

As far as the 4G, I'm guessing the S II will come in different variants just like the original Galaxy S. So on some carriers, it'll have 4G/LTE and on others it won't. There's also talks that there will be a Galaxy S II+ with the only difference so far noted is a 1.4 GHz dual core instead of a 1.2 GHz dual core currently present. Its supposed to come out around the time the iPhone 5 comes out and makes sense because by then, the original Galaxy S II will be 6 months old and in Android time, that's quite a long time.

The phone may use plastic, but Samsung uses high quality plastic as they always have in the past:

Running only the best OS for smartphones...
Yup. Android. It will be tough as nails according to Tag Heuer. The phone will be made from a variety of premium materials, including black PVD, diamonds and rose gold. The mirror-polished and fine-brushed stainless steel is premium grade surgical 316L, corrosion-resistant and hypoallergenic. The big display front is made from damage-resistant Gorilla glass. And the exclusive, hand-worked coverings are in calfskin, alligator or lizard. Other features include a large 3.5’’ display(800*480 ), a 5-mega-pixel auto-focus camera, 11 hours of music play time, WiFi & 3G, 8GBs of storage.
Price? If you're gonna ask...you can't afford it.

More MIUI lockscreens here:

They made a Sense 3.0 Lockscreen that functions almost exactly like the real thing!

First you will need to root the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1039985
Super easy to do....follow the steps in the link. If you can jailbreak, you can do this.
After root, install clockwork mod recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1056847
Then install ROM Manager and you can choose the ROM to install.
Honestly, most of your time will be spent reading and researching. If you take the time to do that, you will be fine. Read the links I posted and go from there.

Yeah, they're pretty good. I'm using the Sense lockscreen. It works so well and functions great.
For everyone else not wanting to jump into the MIUI bandwagon, you can use WidgetLocker to do almost the same function in the market.

They also have themes available for WidgetLocker that mimic other lockscreens:

Looks good. Don't forget to install the Clockwork Recovery. You'll see it in the ROM Manager as well. Also, CM 7.1 is an RC build. There will be some things broken still. RC just means its stable enough for daily use. There will be a few more RCs before it becomes final which should be in the next couple of weeks. One final note, for Cyanogenmod builds, you need to download GApps separately. ROM manager should prompt you. Very noob friendly.

I put a link in there for CWM. If you flash the CWM from ROM manager, it doesn't actually flash the recovery to your phone....you can only access it from ROM manager. If you flash it with the nvflash link I posted, you'll be able to boot into recovery. I ran into this when I had the phone for a brief week.

After reading the link you posted, it seems ROM Manager does do a temporary flash of CWM Recovery. It must be an LG thing. There is a way to temporarily boot into recovery with HTC devices without actually flashing it permanently using fastboot and ADB. However, ROM manager for most phones should flash a permanent CWM recovery.

Ya, I've only ever installed the updates to recovery through CWM. For my G2, I had to use fastboot and ADB like you said.
On a different note, I updated to MIUI 1.6.24 and my lockscreen theme is performing the way it should. With that link you posted I am going to have to switch it up every day. After I updated the ROM and reinstalled my apps (no data) with TiBackup, I was getting a constant FC on android.process.acore and I didn't want to factory reset. So, with the help of google and xda, I tracked it down to the contacts app. I deleted all the backups and wiped the data from both the contact apps (there's one called storage and a standard one) and the FC went away.
I don't mind doing a factory reset, but I generally seem to get the tough FC issues after I've spent 40 minutes getting the phone setup the way I want it. lol

is there no way to port of MIUI lockscreens to CM7?
Or does CM7 have the availability of any cool lock screens?

WidgetLocker is your only option and even then it'll still be pretty limited because the MIUI lockscreens are built into the framework. They have themes for WidgetLocker that come close to MIUI lockscreens but nothing will be exactly like it, at least for now.

^Actually from all the reviews so far, its been very positive. The best of Facebook, Twitter and Skype seems to be the consensus. The Hangout feature alone looks pretty cool. When Buzz came out, everyone was up in arms especially with the privacy issue.
I just got my invite...But I can't get in yet. Over capacity. Hopefully, Google didn't limit the invites when I got mine. Will find out once it stop being over capacity. I'll try to send some invites once I get in.

It seems people are getting invitations and getting in and others are getting invitations but getting the capacity message. I'm in the latter group. If you guys want to try your luck, Android Police is sending out invites using a private Google Docs form:

Google+ lets you pretty much have full control of what you share and who you share it with upfront using the Circles, one of my bigger gripes with Facebook especially once they started everyone and their mothers get on it. Downside right now is that not many of my friends are on or using Google Plus yet. So far I've only added the Android devs on there and they're pretty active on there. According to some people, the invite loophole still sorta works but its not guranteed to get you in. Its probably what happened to me where I got an invite but it didn't go through. Maybe it just gives you priority?
