received chromcast last night.

pretty cool, especially with avia. (I paid the 3 bucks)

and although cool, the (illegal) streaming website is okay. most of the movies i tried are cam uploads, so not great quality.

will play around with it more!!

Whoops! Looks like Amazon fixed that error now - back up to $4.99.

Good thing I pounced on it with quickness

so, I walked into Best Buy today, and saw a 64GB micro SD card on sale for $39.99.... pretty good (considering "Canadian pricing"). I bought it, I figured why not? Take out the 32GB micro SD card that's in the Note 3 now (perhaps just use it for my camera) and expand the NOTE 3 with the 64GB. I have some games like Need For Speed on the SD card... So, I started moving a bunch of apps back to device's storage, NFS alone is about 2GB... But after I moved all the apps back to device storage, I didn't see any difference

these are screenshots BEFORE I moved the apps back to the device storage

these are screenshots AFTER

so, available space didn't really change, yet Mics. files actually went DOWN Available Space didn't really change much either with the SD card

I don't get it.

Wife dropped her note2 and the screen has a big cracked in the middle. The phone works fine.

Any recommendation on how to fix this? Thank you. It's VZW btw.

You pretty much have to have done quite a few glass screen replacement to be comfortable doing this on your own.

Paging speedemon90.

You could just put a screen protector on it to prevent finger bleeding, select a wallpaper to accompany the crack, and enjoy the phone until your next one.

As stated in the previous link, because the glass is glued to the digitizer, it's non-trivial. It's technically possible to use a heat gun to soften the glue, detach, reattach the glass. However, unless you are REALLY good, you are going to either break something, or screw up your screen sensitivity.
This isn't something like a screen protector where if you get a piece of dust you can just remove it and retry.

I ended up ordering a complete screen assembly from parts4repair.com ($210), and the ifixit tool kit. You mainly need the proper sized screwdrivers, but the plastic levers were HUGELY useful in prying the two halves of the Note apart. It's clipped in really tight.

the screen has 2 components...cover and the screen (digitizer) itself....

changing either is very very tough....

when my note broke, the screen and touch worked well and I decided to take on the project to change the cover....the cover was $10 from Amazon

about half way through, I applied a tad bit more pressure (I was working with playing card to peel the screen away)....so you can imagine the pressure wasnt much but just a little bit more and the digitizer cracked....now the screen wont come on...the digitizer was like $150-ish and I decided to screw it and just waited until I was ready for an upgrade

EDIT: I used this video for instructions:

I got my Oppo N1, it's a pretty interesting device.
I used to tell everyone my Note 2 was the SUV of smartphones.
The N1 is..... a HUMMER I guess.

Still (barely) pocketable so far, (very surprisingly), even though it's 2 cm longer than the Note 2. It's heavier, though, and I don't trust my Mountek snap to hold it.

I was playing xelorians (a great SHMUP), and I hit an annoying quirk.
You hold your finger about 1 cm below your ship to move it around (very nice, your finger isn't blocking your view so much).
Unlike the Note 2, which had a hardware home button, this one has a flat capacitive home button.
So what would constantly happen is, I would be dodging stuff and I'd try to move my ship to the bottom center of the screen, and my finger would slide right onto the home button and kick me out to the home screen.

Another note:
For those of you who are rooted, the Xposed Framework aka
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1574401
Gives you tremendous ability to mod your phone.

One of the best is "per app settings" which allows you to change the DPI density of individual apps. This means for larger screens you actually get MORE text/graphics, rather than LARGER fonts/graphics. It really increases the productivity of a large screen.

Edit - found an xposed module that lets me change what the hardware buttons do. So I removed the single click on the home button, and made it a press/hold to trigger. No more problems now. I love android.

Really annoying issue with my Samsung 3S....... when someone sends a mass text to say like 10 people, I get all the replies from everyone back and forth, even if it's people I have no idea who they are. Any way to stop getting these texts? Deleting the chat thread does
nothing because when another text is sent it pops up all over again. thanks.

How is the card formatted? Did you format it in the camera?
It has to be formatted exFat, not FAT32 (which only supports 32 gig).

hmmmm formatted? I took it out of the packaging and went straight into the phone, I would think the phone would just do whatever it has to

I mean, I'm able to have all photos taken with the phone's camera and go into the SD card, so I'm assuming it's automatically formatted

Thumbs up Autos

That kid—the 1 in the back of the SUV with the iPad—is the automotive industry’s worst enemy. He’s also the reason some of the world’s biggest automakers are working with Google to bring its Android software into vehicle infotainment systems.

Early this morning, Google (GOOG) announced the Open Automotive Alliance. It’s a group of technology and automotive companies, including General Motors (GM), Honda Motor (HMC), Audi, Hyundai, and chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA), that want to customize Google’s popular mobile operating system for vehicles. The technology companies get a chance to place their wares into hundreds of millions of cars. Meanwhile, the automakers have an opportunity to modernize the software inside their vehicles and try to keep pace with the mobile devices that are starting to make high-profit infotainment systems obsolete.

The announcement comes the day before the official opening of the International Consumer Electronics Show held this week in Las Vegas, where the theme of car-as-gadget (also called “the connected car”) is expected to dominate. Volkswagen (VOW)‘s Audi unit and GM are among the slate of auto companies at CES, which is promoting the growth of car-related exhibits.

Car companies have traditionally rejected the latest and greatest gizmos, preferring stable, proven technology. It’s a stance that makes sense given the safety and reliability concerns they face. The rise and rapid evolution of smartphones and tablets, however, has put a great deal of pressure on these automotive traditions. The mapping services that come free with smartphones have become a compelling alternative to pricey built-in navigation systems. Similarly, a parent might prefer to hand a child a tablet or phone loaded with movies, games, and apps rather than rely on a single DVD playing on backseat screens.

So far, carmakers have largely responded with custom in-car software systems. Ford Motor (F) and Microsoft (MSFT) collaborated on MyFord Touch, which ties cars to mobile devices and allows for things like voice commands. Other carmakers use the QNX software acquired by BlackBerry (BBRY), homegrown software, or variants of the Linux operating system. While the strategy helps car companies create products that differ from their rivals’, it also requires software companies to write different applications for each carmaker—a costly and time-consuming process.

There have already been attempts to solve this problem through partnerships. In 2009, BMW, GM, Intel (INTC), and others, for example, announced the Genivi Alliance, a stab at collaborating around the Linux operating system and supporting software that has had modest results. (Genivi is sponsoring a panel at CES called, alarmingly, “Collaborate or Die.”)

Android, a variant of Linux, has an advantage over other software because of its dominance in the mobile device industry. The electronics and computing supply chain throughout Asia, Europe, and the U.S. tends to test and tune new components first for Android, providing intense interest and deep expertise around the software. For the automakers, this could translate into access to newer, better technology and lower costs for testing equipment. App makers are also used to creating software for Android. In addition, the likes of BMW, Kia, Audi, and Toyota Motor (TM) already use Google technology for search, maps, and other functions.

Tesla Motors (TSLA) is among the cutting-edge automakers that have popularized the notion of a computer on wheels as the next evolution of the car. The company’s all-electric Model S sedan ships with a 17-inch touch screen and ready access to things like streaming radio. With a few finger swipes, you can split the screen to have a massive top section for Google Maps and a lower section for music.

Elsewhere in Silicon Valley, new companies like CloudCar are working to bridge the technology and automotive realms. The company has built a small computing device that can be plugged into a car to give it a modern infotainment system. The idea is that automakers could then upgrade the small unit as needed to bring new features to their vehicles. In addition, software makers would have a common device to aim at with their applications. Ford has also set up a research center in Palo Alto and open-sourced some of the innards of its cars’ control software to let people create things like custom speedometers.

I like this just because having Google Maps alone built into a car as the navigation system would be great.

totally agreed. Getting directions (entering start and end) is SO much easier in google maps than in any car nav system I have used recently (Acura, BMW) that I just got a new car withOUT nav so I can use my phone with google maps and save $2k on the price of the car. Car nav systems are 5 years behind the times at best.

also, loving my Moto X even on stock Android. Active display is awesome

I got white front, olive back, and orange accents... the accents looked good in pictures but I think I'll just reorder it in silver trim. I didn't want to be boring, but the accents are just too loud.

It's certainly worth a try since it takes only a couple of seconds.

While it shouldn't happen, I've seen glitches where you format a memory card in your PC and there's weirdness using it in your camera/phone. I never understood why it is, but formatting stuff in-device is always best.
