Anybody using hangouts yet as a replacement for talk? I've got the update available but I'm afraid it's going to make me a beta tester for a replacement for an app I rely on (talk).

Some things I have noticed gone from Talk to Hangouts:
- no more custom status messages (say goodbye to your insightful song lyrics as status)
- no more Invisible mode (replaced by snooze notifications)

and a cool random add-on:
- Easter eggs!!

I would recommend waiting until SMS integration before convincing friends to use it outside of Gmail because then you can just tell them to replace their stock messaging app and it would be so much easier.

This is a good read:
http://www.androidcentral.com/new-google-play-services

Also would ring true to the behind-the-scene talks that Google intentionally did not release a new version of Android at I/O because they wanted to show that they can bring updates and new things to their platform without making a new OS version. Imagine the awesomeness.

Someone got that case for their S4 and posted pics. Definitely a uniquely beautiful case:

(New) Hangouts is definitely more confusing than it should be to get used to, but good thing I don't use it enough to make me care before SMS integration.
I also do not like how it integrates with Google+ because now my contacts list is filled with tons of stuff I follow on G+ but do not want in real life, especially crowding my phone.

...so, I'm coming home to LA in June (June 10th -July 1st), and need to get a 1 month plan. When I was home last time, I got a month with T-Mobile and it was great at my mom's house (because Verizon, AT&T AND Sprint all suck at the particular spot where the house is located). But since MetroPCS and T-Mo are together now, would I expect the same reception at my mom's house if I was to go with MetroPCS? It's $10 cheaper for their plans

Another thing I miss from Talk in the new Hangouts is that you can no longer properly see your blocked list

is300, you would not receive the same reception if you go with MetroPCS because contrary to popular belief, just because 2 companies agree to a merger does not mean they are instantly merged together like a leech on skin. It takes time and it is not that time yet. So go look and see whether MetroPCS has bette reception in your area now, or go with the $35 T-Mobile plan. That's probably the cheapest.

I believe opboarding will be in LA around that time as well. Android party!

I'm still on the fence about upgrading, but will definitely stay in the Android family. Until then my Skyrocket S2 battery is starting to fade fast. Would anyone recommend going back to an OEM from Samsung or going to Batteries Plus and try getting something more powerful without frying the phone?

Thanks,

Anthony

That case is fat...Maybe its for protection but as nice as it looks, I wouldn't be using something that thick. I wonder if NFC would still work in that case since it looks to create such a huge buffer at the rear.

LOL yeah, but compared to the Otterbox Commuter, it looks less fat. And I've always used Otterbox cases in the past and NFC and even wireless charging still works through them.

The GS4 Active looks amazing:

Also, another thing I found out about Hangouts this weekend is that you cannot use the share photo/take photo feature if you do not have a Google+ account. Was frustrating trying to explain it to regular people, so I ended up telling people that it was Google's version of Facebook.... :x

Took a quick photosphere shot sitting outside my friends house on Friday. There are two blemishes, but its the best one Ive taken thus far.

I edited it lightly using the built-in editing app- just tweaked exposure, contrast, vibrance and shadows.

probably a completely wrong place to ask, but i kinda want to make an app for the heck of it. Dont really care about monetizing or anything really (unless it took off which it wont) but say i wanted to make one that notifies you if theres a new episode for your tv show you watch.

But how would I pull that data on tv shows???

I think you're setting the goal waaay too high for this app.

Ask yourself this. Do you know how to make a tip calculator app? With buttons and number pad inputs? If you don't then you are way ahead of yourself on your original idea.

You would first need to find a way to extract feeds from that site. Usually these feeds are in the form of JSON or XML. For example Blockbuster has this new release feeds that you can query: http://www.blockbuster.com/rss/newRelease

But most sites don't provide such a feed if it's not important.

If you have no idea what I said so far, start with a hello world app

Maybe I should make a tip calculator to start off with haha, learn the basics.

I've never created an app before lol, I'm currently going through the tutorial on the developer site. So I guess I should start off with a simple tip calculator app then go and reach for higher goals. Thanks!!

Ohh when I'm done all of you better use my app or else

I'm with you bro. I've got a ton of ideas and can do the PhD marketing/econ level research, but the programming is a man working on a 2020 Vette thinking it's a 1973 Pinto.

FWIW, there are a few sites out there that you can pitch your idea for funding or development of the app itself. But I'd suggest at least get the patent pending process going so you don't lose your creative idea. It;s basically like the IRS 1040 minus 10 and about $350.

So the Google edition S4...

Isn't it going to be the same thing as buying an S4 right now, and rooting and flashing a vanilla android rom? I'm sure the official Google one will have a few less bugs but won't it just get ported over to all the other S4's?

I really want to buy an S4. Soon.

Any rumors about the Note 3?

Also those of you who have switched from iOS recently how difficult was it to get everything in sync?

Not saying I'm gonna switch but if I do it's either go big or go home for me as I only use this as basically a tablet

Not to discourage you, but you will be turned off by the initial setup. What I mean is you will give up when you find out you can't get things to work/set up properly. That is the number one problem with programming, setting up the environment.

After that the hurdle you have to go through is understand the life cycle of the Android app. How does the app terminate? What gets loaded when the app starts? What happens when you leave your app for another view?

Then comes the hardest part, understanding the Android API. I can make a tip calculator in Java and output it to the console in less than 5 minutes, maybe half that time if I am motivated. But in Android it's going to take me 20-30 minutes if I am new to the Android API. Basically, even if you know the Java language, you have to learn the "Android language."

Here is a simple movie quiz app that I made for a school project that took me about 25 hours: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5vx85p81sl...S122BPROJ5.apk

As simple as it looks, the hours put in was mostly researching how to use the Android API.

Anyone here have a Samsung Galaxy Victory from Virgin Mobile? We're thinking about getting rid of the Samsun Galaxy S3 from Verizon and going with a lower rate plan.

Possibly. It's actually already going badly... most of the people that either quit or got fired in the first wave were all in the products division, then the next wave was marketing, and now it just seems like the fired people are telling everyone else to quit because it will only get worse..... and some already quit across multiple worldwide offices. They will likely shut down their USA office and everyone in the industry is already avoiding that office like the plague. Expect some comparisons to the Nokia event a few years ago.

Not really. the GE is pretty much a Nexus device without the branding. You get all the Nexus experience and updates straight from Google. To get a similar experience so far only the International and T-Mobile versions can give you that via rom, but not the other carrier versions.

Nothing new. It will come out end of the year, it may or may not retain the same design language as the S4, and it may have a bigger screen.

Yea I haven't got much time, but I was looking into it and its going to be a tough hill to climb over.

In the end whatever I do get done, I think it will help as coding is quite important to engineering. So far I'm pretty good in MATLAB, which is used quite a bit in BME. But just knowing more coding never hurts. I'm not super motivated, but its something I'll look into reading about how to do and doing it every now and then. If in 3 months I get the app awesome, if not
