yea realtime updates would murder it haha

you know something i noticed about google now

well i dunno if its my rom or the recent update, but the results that arent cards that show the web come up a million times faster. Before it was so slow that i'd literally wait long enough that i'd quit and just go to chrome.

Yup and they added a few more commands. From /r/Android:

Everytime Google adds new features to search (i.e. Google Now) they neglect to tell you how to use them. So...

Launch Apps
"open app name_of_app"

For example, "open app youtube"

Some important caveats: you'll need to know the name of the app. For example, "open app kindle" will not work. You have to say "open app amazon kindle"

Schedule Calendar Event
"schedule a type_of_event with person_name at time_of_event"

For Example: "schedule a phone call with John tomorrow at 6pm"

An important caveat: That will NOT create an appointment. Instead, you'll get a card that says "edit event" on it. Click that and then click the "done" button and now it's scheduled. This is (hopefully) a bug.

Checking upcoming Schedule

"when is my next appointment" THIS IS FIXED FROM PREVIOUS INCORRECT SUGGESTION
I hope they allow turning off WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and all the others soon. Not really necessary with the Quick Action bar I guess but it would make it more hands free.

Android 4.2 Gallery and Camera:

The leaks keep coming:

http://omgdroid.com/?p=26584

Go get it before Google takes it down.

Boo. Photosphere isn't working yet. The new interface is different. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

It looks like the guy who uploaded is aware of the Photosphere FC's and is planning to have it fixed tomorrow. Its missing two lib files which hopefully he has access to so it should work.

http://forums.androidcentral.com/ver...-2-camera.html

They also added this 3 circles looking thing when viewing pictures. Supposedly it accesses the Picture Editor but right now it also FC's when you click on it.

Lol. I know what you mean. It looks like Photosphere is fixed. Gonna go and flash and play with it later. Same link I posted at omgdroid. Not sure if it works on other devices than the Nexus.

Haha. If I was around you I would definitely do it.

Well I couldn't wait and tried out photosphere. (Surprise surprise. Lol.) Photosphere is pretty sweet. The pics are taken instantaneously and its very easy to use. You start off with an alignment. Seems to want you to start off directly vertical from the ground before it aligns. Then you swing it to predetermined dots in any direction and without pressing a button it takes the shots for you every time you hit the predetermined points indicated with a blue circle. There seems to be some issues with the stitchng but its probably cause this is a hacked version and probably because I'm taking a picture of my desk at a very close range. Lol.

Android Police released a better working version of the 4.2 camera. Photo editor now works:

http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/10...-photo-sphere/

It seems to be working on AOSP built ROMs running 4.1 and above. I can't seem to find the red eye editor in the new photo editor. I know they broke it in Jelly Bean. Maybe they got rid of it completely.

Yeah. Its a pretty cool idea though. Its basically Street View in the hands of consumers and sharing the photos onto Google Maps is an awesome idea. The stitching needs some work on the version that's out. Hopefully, the real deal won't have stitching anomalies. This one is a pretty good one:

Yeah I remember my friend had the app on iOS. Needless to say it was crappy and she quickly dumped the app a few days after. Not sure how it is on Windows Phones as I've never really used one beyond its homepage. Now that's not to say Google's implementation is any better but from the stuff being posted on Google+ makes it look pretty good since its accesible to anyone who has a G+ account and doesnt require Silverlight (which is still unavailable on Linux). Also the fact that you can add your own photos to Google Maps would be very useful for showing friends what things look like without having them be there physically and places Google hasn't done a street view of yet.

LG Nexus 4 system dump has been posted:

http://www.droid-life.com/2012/11/01...-for-download/

I wonder what other goodies they can take from there and add to current ROMs until the proper SDK is uploaded.

The guide looks good. Just one question, why not download CM10 straight from CM?

http://get.cm/?device=quincyatt

And the latest Gapps is 10/11:

http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip

The general guide to root and install CM10 is as follows:

- Download ODIN and appropriate CWM Recovery image.
- Install Phone's Drivers if you haven't done so already. (Probably the most difficult part of the whole thing.)
- Boot phone into Download Mode. Attach phone to computer. If ODIN recognizes it, you'll see a Yellow COM Port.
- Follow the checkboxes in the guide and flash the CWM Recovery.
- Boot into CWM Recovery

Once you have CWM you can go two different ways:

1) You can install root.
- Flash Superuser.zip in CWM
- Have root access
- You can run Titanium Backup to backup your data files and apps safely somewhere
- Once you have root, you can install ROM Manager from the Play Store and install CM10 this way as well. (I'm not a big fan of running automated apps but for noobs this could be a lot easier)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...9tbWFuYWdlciJd

2) You can flash CM10 (This is what ROM Manager essentially does)
- You don't need to flash Superuser.zip because CM10 already has it included.
- You will also wipe everything so you should do an NAndroid if you want before you proceed.
- Wipe Data/Factory reset
- Wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache
- Install CM10 and then the new 10/11 GApps.
- Reboot into CM10
- Done

First boot will take the longest so wait it out. Sometimes it may take 5-10 minutes. If after 10 minutes it still doesn't boot, then you will need to flash stock using ODIN. My friend is running it on his Note so it should be stable. It may not be 100% optimized yet as Samsung hasn't released official JB and sources yet but once they do it should be faster. Its fairly fast as it is though.

Also of note, latest Titanium Backup is able to read backups from NAndroid backups. So you could technically just do an NAndroid then restore your files from it using Titanium Backup. When restoring files, do NOT restore System Apps to prevent errors. There are exceptions (SMS/MMS) but you're better off not restoring them.

Turn off Screen when using MHL/HDMI!

Woo hoo someone finally made the app called Screen Standby Root:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....screenstandby

Need root to use it. Allows the screen to be turned off while mirroring via MHL/HDMI to a display. Has a proximity and shake to wake function while backscreen is off. Best of all, its free.

Apparently, Android 4.1 has a PC Keyboard Layout that allows the Number keys to be posted on the top row of the Keyboard:

http://unleashthephones.com/2012/10/...-4-2-keyboard/

You have to enable it in the Keyboard Settings and then change the input method to PC to enable it. Its a little confusing but the guide above has some pictures. Have it running on my Nexus 7 running stock keyboard and besides the keys being smaller, I have the whole number rows on top.

Google Wallet is going to be releasing a physical card that you can order that will combine all of your credit cards into one:

Let's cut to the chase: physical Google Wallet card. That's happening, and you'll be able to get one, probably soon.
The physical Google Wallet card will work just like a regular credit card. Whatever your currently selected default card on the Wallet app is, the Wallet card will charge to. It will work anywhere major credit cards are accepted. This is for those scenarios where you don't have (or want to use) tap and pay. Imagine leaving all your credit cards at home from now on, and just carrying one, and your phone. Sure, it's not the magical future of using your phone to pay everywhere with a painless tap (let's face it, tap payments are rarely painless anyway), but this is awesome nonetheless.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/11...-new-features/

Sounds like a cool idea. You can leave all of your cards at home then manage just one physical card via the Google Wallet app or the internet. Alternatively, you can still use NFC to pay with your phone.

Man Android Police is on a roll. More upcoming features in 4.2:

Maps is getting real-time traffic rerouting!

In order for this message to be necessary, Maps would have to be periodically checking traffic conditions and recalculating new routes while you drive. When it finds a better route, it will prompt you with these messages. This would be really helpful for a long trip, and it's something that shouldn't be too hard to implement.

Google Now will be learning a few new tricks as well, the most exciting of which is probably the last thing that gives me Siri/S-Voice envy: how to hold a conversation. If tell S-Voice to "Send text to Bob," it will say "Ok, sending text to Bob, what would you like it to say?" and then you can verbally dictate a message. These 2 or sometimes 3 step voice interactions are much more natural and easier than the perfectly-executed "verbal command line" that Google Now requires.

LG Nexus 4 first hand impressions by Android Police

For the people worried about LG making crappy hardware:

For starters, the build quality and materials are amazing. As soon as you pick it up you know you're holding something that is built with more love and thought than a Galaxy Nexus or GSIII. The front and back are Gorilla Glass 2 and the sides are made from a rubberized plastic that actually feels great. The whole phone is really solid, and it's the first Android phone that seems like it's had real passion put into the design.

The front is still a beautiful, minimalist black slab, devoid of any logos or carrier branding. I love it. The back features a giant Nexus logo at the top and a smaller manufacturer logo at the bottom. This is, easily, the most beautiful Android phone ever made. I'll take some proper pictures of it later.

Anyone who is worried about the back of the phone being a sparkly disco ball can rest easy. In many lighting conditions, the back is black - just black. When the light catches it just right, there is a very tasteful, subdued shimmer effect that rolls across the dots. The dots on the back don't bindingly reflect light, either, they just kind of turn silver. Camera flash is pretty much the worst case scenario. Even in that picture on the left, the reflection is greatly exaggerated. In the right picture, the bottom right corner is about as bright as it ever looks in real life. In person it's very subtle, tasteful, and kind of hypnotizing.

Compared to a Galaxy Nexus? Well the Gnex looks like it just walked out of a garbage heap when compared to the N4. The glass back and build quality outclasses the Galaxy Nexus so much it isn't even fair. If you care about that stuff, you're going to want to upgrade.

Speaking of which, with the beautiful design, and lack of LTE, an SD card, and a removable battery, I'm starting to think this phone isn't for geeks, but for designers. I really like for my phones to be well made and beautiful, and this is right up my alley. Many of our commenters won't like it because of the spec sheet (it's insanely fast, by the way), but if you just want a premium feeling, stunning looking device that is still fast and functional, this is your dream phone. I feel like this is the first time Android has had a piece of hardware that matches the stock OS design philosophy. Some people won't care about that, but those that do will be absolutely in love.

Galaxy Note II sells 3 million in first month.

Just over a month removed from launching its latest phablet, Samsung is reporting the Galaxy Note II has already racked up sales of 3 million units. The 5.5-inch stylus-enabled smartphone is selling at more than three times the rate of the original Note, a figure which probably won't be hurt by rolling out on multiple carriers including Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and US Cellular in the US. This supersized device can't quite match the mainstream appeal of Samsung's own Galaxy S III -- which cracked 20 million just 100 days after its debut -- but it should quickly surpass its predecessor, last seen cresting the 10 million mark back in August. Still not sure if squeezing this one into your skinny jeans is a good idea? If our review wasn't convincing enough, Samsung has a few hands-on videos of its own to show off some of its more unique capabilities, and is pushing the Note II with an ad campaign featuring LeBron James (insert joke about needing a 6' 8" basketball player to make it look normal here.)
Here's the Lebron commercial:

http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/s...-ii-3-million/

So I guess they won't be dropping screen sizes any time soon with the way sales are going with this. The other US carriers haven't even gotten the phone yet so this is pretty interesting that they've sold so many so quickly. The HTC Droid DNA (Droid Incredible X) is making some rounds as well so maybe its coming out soon?

samsung is also the best at marketing their phones in the US at least, which is part of the reason they are way ahead of any other android manufacturer

I love my note 2, but I'll the first one to tell you that it's not going to outsell the S3. Not even close. It's just too big for many people.

I haven't paid enough attention to other phones in a while, but Samsung is certainly great about trying to hit every single little niche they can find. Their android phones go all the way from their SUV 5.55" galaxy note 2, down to their galaxy pocket - a 2.8" screen.

And really, since one handedness/pocketability depends on each person's hands/pockets - that's the way it should be.

I personally think the multi window thing is a huge selling point.
Not having to go back and forth between apps when someone is messaging you non stop is really really sweet. It's supposedly being pushed to the S3, but it'll be a little tight, real estate wise. (especially once you pop up the keyboard).

I was all set to get the Note II (Verizon, upgrading from IP4), but now I'm going to have to wait and see what the Samsung ATIV Odyssey has to offer (W8 phone)....

Lol.
Can you view photosphere pics on a computer?

Currently, only through the Google+ Photo viewer and on your phone gallery. According to Android Police, anyone can create an app to view the Photos though so its a matter of someone creating said app. There is a way to share the pictures to Google Maps but I haven't tried it yet.

Still a work in progress but you can grab the APK and sideload it to try it out. No root needed to install.

It'll always come down to how comfortable are you waiting for updates and whether or not you'll be flashing custom ROMs? Samsung's current TouchWiz brings a lot of improvements over Vanilla Android which gives it its own definition of Android. For the most part, TouchWiz has a lot of useful stuff that Vanilla Android doesn't have especially when it comes to the S-Pen. Vanilla Android just can't touch that functionality at the moment

With that said, Nexus devices can be manipulated and different ROMs can be ported in any way you like. They'll always have the newest Google updates first and will have all the more cool new stuff first. Vanilla Android isn't for everyone though as its missing certain things that Skins cover like T9 Dialing, and other useful things. Of course, if you flash a custom ROM you can get those functionalities but not everyone is comfortable tweaking their phone.

So it comes down to how much you're gonna be spending time with your phone. If you're okay with Skinned Android and don't really care about modding, get the Note II. On the other hand, if you want to be up to date with the latest features Google puts out, have time to tinker with your phone and have the best developer community then get the Nexus.

So I've noticed that a few reviews for the Nexus devices already went up. The reason you haven't seen any from the main Android blogs like Android Police, Android Central, etc. is because the software that's currently on the phones right now isn't final. There's supposed to be an OTA update to fix a few bugs and finalized 4.2 which is also probably why it hasn't dropped into AOSP. With that said, take what you're reading with a grain of salt for now...
