The goal line plane is unique under NFL rules. When a player breaks the plane of the goal line with the ball in his possession, it is a touchdown, even though the player's body may be in the field of play. This plane extends to infinity and if a player crosses the goal line with his body and the ball extended over the sideline, it is a touchdown because of the invisible plane. The sidelines and endlines do not have the same magic; however, if a player has the ball extended over the sideline or endline and his body is completely in the field of play or the end zone, the play is not ruled out of bounds in the field or the end zone.

Exclude everything else and read what you bolded and you will understand what I am getting at. When they reference side line, they are talking about the side line of the end zone.

I was saying that it should have been reviewed. My wasn't saying it was a touchdown my point is that the Pylon is IN BOUNDS.

That's what I said when I saw the replay, the ball just has to cross the plane, and he crossed the line in the air

He was ok, i was worried when they didn't say anything about his injury. But he came back out in the second half, and he was the one that threw the TD pass to ward in the trick play. He used to be a qb in college.

Your older than I am, so havn't you ever noticed how runners stretch the ball over the pylon when they dive out of bounds by the goal line. If all they had to do was jump far enough out in order to pass the goal line...don't you think they would?

1 play please. Seattle had 400 yards of offense on Blitzburgh. They made Pittsburgh look dumb until the refs took over.

You have a point there. I am going to send a question to the NFL and see if they respond. I am pretty sure the goalline extends to infinity, pass the pylons, but you did bring up a good point about them trying to get the ball inside the pylon.

and I am not that much older than you. I just turned 29 today.

LOL,

It seems like we are not the only ones having this discussion. There are tons of messages boards regarding the same issue. The NFL needs to release an official answer!

Ok, the more I think about it, what you are saying does make sense. Take Carl Lewis for example, in his prime he could jump close to 30 feet (close to 10 yards). So if Lewis was playing in the NFL, he could conceivably run the ball to the 9 or 8 yard line and then jump out of bounds at a 45 degree angle out of bounds. This would put him pass the plane of the goalline, but well out of bounds. This wouldn't make much sense to be ruled a TD, since many player would attempt to do the same thing as you suggested. I am still curious about the infinity rule, but you seem to be correct about a diving player out of bounds should not be given the TD. Your right, I'm wrong.

Carl Lewis? lol

Again, I think you are confusing it with the line of scrimmage which does extend forever and comes into play when the QB throws the ball out of bounds. Actually, Madden talked about that this season.

yeah, seattle should have won. they're the real champs. if they played this game 10 times, seattle woulda won 9 of them. You guys are right, why play the games?

the "real champs" and their coach didn't royally fuck up on clock management at the end of BOTH halves, didn't drop passes, didn't miss 2 important FGs, didn't get burned on the game deciding 'trick' play, DIDN'T GIVE UP A FREAKING 75 YARD TOUCHDOWN RUN. You're right, seattle deserved to win this game. It's all the refs fault.

Neither team played spectacularly, but Seattle did suck worse.

And I had to leave right after the game.... did Holmgren ever come out and shake Cowher's hand after the game? It looked like cowher was waiting for him and he never came.

There was a Dolphins/Jets game this season. And this is probably where I remember Madden and Michaels dicussing it.

The infinty rule only applies if the player is inbounds. I found this website that had the official rule and TD definition.

Check this mboard out.

They didn't show, but Cowher was making an effort to find him. He kept saying, where's Mike. If Holmgren did leave and purposefully didn't meet up with Cowher, that was a pretty classless move.

Holmgren probably was so pissed at the refs he did not want to shake anyone's hand.

Maybe...but Holmgren knows as well as anyone that the officiating had nothing to do with Cowher. I am just going to hope that Holmgren found Cowher, and it just wasn't televised.
