...Which is why I think the Avs got absolutely fleeced by the Caps. All they had to do was sign Var to an offer sheet and it was UNLIKELY (next to impossible, honestly) that your team would've matched and the worst case would be a 2nd rounder.

Instead...they give up a 1st as well? I wonder if the Canuckleheads would've started to riot again if THAT offer was given for Schneider.

Burke is in Khandahar meeting with troops. This was planned awhile ago. Although not sure why in the hell they would schedule this on July 1.

I don't think I've ever seen anything like whats happening at the hotel in Toronto today. Its Brad Richards, not Sidney Crosby. TSN and Sportsnet are camped outside like the fawkin paparazzi waiting for people going in and out.

Some of these contracts. Erik Cole Leino Erhoff Me thinks GM's and onwers will live to regret most of these deals.

Someone wake me when the Leafs do something to improve the team.

The camp-out for Richards blows my mind. He's not exactly a Top 10 player. It's even debatable that he's a #1 center.

BTW - Wht wasn't Pittsburgh in on Talbot? Was it a cap issue or don't they want him back?

Its under 2 per year, not crazy like some of these other deals.

I think it was a 3-year term versus the 2000 years the Flyers gave.

Still, I think Philly's MO today was "let's piss off Pittsburgh"...

Well, with Montador, O'Donnell, Mayers, and now Carcillo...Cheapshot teams like Vancouver will think twice about running Toews/Kane.

I hope.

According to Sportsnet, Richards has decided on the Rangers. No word on the specifics yet but 9 years was being rumored.

6.5 million cap hit. Good luck with that NY.

I wonder why he chose NY. Maybe I'm not familiar with their lineup but they don't strike me as close to winning anything. Was it all about the coin? Should have went to LA.

Well, that was interesting 24 hours. What's depressing is that next years crop of free agents could be headed by Semin and Doan. Ouch.

Not enough good players to go around unfortunately.

Shows that the cap-era NHL is to build from within (i.e. draft) and then sign pieces to go around the core. Teams are locking up their best players for long-term contracts now...

So, Toronto can have Toews and Doughty when they are 46.

Well, they have Gaborik, Staal, and of course, Henrik Lundqvist...not a terrible group. But, agree...If I were Richards, I would've gone to LA.

And the Kings probably didn't just have a token offer considering they brought everyone to beg...

Yeahgur says:

Jaromir Jagr says he spurned more lucrative offers to make his NHL comeback with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The 39-year-old Jagr and former NHL MVP spent the past three seasons playing in Russia. This week he mulled over a one-year offer to rejoin the Penguins, his original team, before deciding to play on the other end of Pennsylvania.

The Flyers' deal is worth US$3.3 million. Jagr did not name the teams he said offered more money.

Jagr says he has an opportunity to play more with the Flyers and likes the moves general manager Paul Holmgren made over the last 10 days. Jagr says the addition of goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov was a reason for his signing.

Jagr was a Pittsburgh draft pick in 1990, and helped lead the Penguins to two Stanley Cup championships.

And fragile as heck too. They picked up two center's who if we're lucky will play 60 games combined.

But they now have 8 NHL calibre defense man. Which means a trade is coming, no doubt. Look for Schenn Senior or Aulie to get traded in a deal that brings a forward.

King's went "all in" for Brad Richards. Of course, we all know where Brad ended up signing...but, I wonder how Waldorf feels about a contract he would've for sure seen as
"cap hell" from Deano...

From TSN...

Los Angeles, Calgary and Toronto presented compelling and in some cases, more lucrative offers, however, in the end the lure of Manhattan and the chance to reunite with Rangers coach John Tortorella closed the deal for Brad Richards.

Toronto tabled a six-year offer with an annual average salary greater than the $6.67 million that Richards will earn in New York, while the Kings and Flames both went "all in" in this game of high-stakes poker with mammoth nine-year, $60-65 million packages.

NHL stars Mike Richards and Jarome Iginla played their part in trying to woo the coveted centre west, while legends such as Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier added their support in an effort to land this year's biggest free agent fish.

The Rangers will pay Richards $50 million in the first five years of the contract, including $24 million in the first two years, $18 million of which is structured as a signing bonus and protected against the possibility of a lockout in 2012-13.

In the meantime, Toronto didn't waste time initiating plan "B" and signed Tim Connolly to lead the Leafs offence with Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul.

Connolly's two-year agreement in part, is designed to give him just enough time to put a history of injuries behind him.

The 30-year-old was a prime target with four teams vying for his services, but was told by the Leafs on Friday that if they failed to sign Brad Richards, he was their man.

on Burke not getting caught up in the stupidity of these contract lengths. No doubt he'd do it on someone worthy like a Stamkos, but not for Brad Richards.

It was only a few short years ago where he was one of the leagues most overpaid players who Tampa had to dump.

...and Deano wins again. Sure AEG put a gun to his head and wanted Richards come hell or high water.....but like last year, Deano is smart to be a bridesmaid once again.

Rangers: Enjoy cap-hell. Richards: You will never win the Cup as a Ranger.

Gagne: Welcome to L.A.....your contract and cap hit are like liquid gold!!!

Kings looking

That asshat must know most of his traffic comes from Toronto. Why else does he always go around posting BS about deals they're making and players they're signing.

Why in the world would Tampa not keep Stamkos? Lecavalier, sure but Stamko's isn't going anywhere and certainly not to Toronto who have little to offer back.

How is he smart? If rumors are true that he also offered 9 years then he's just as dumb as Slats. Just luckier not to get saddled into it.

pssst....AEG wanted Brad, just like AEG wanted Kovalchuk....as for Deano he never wanted to throw away the future on them.

His comments after Kovy, and after Brad are quite telling....read between the lines.....the happiest guy to be a bridesmaid is Deano.

AEG wants a "icon" player for the Kings.
Deano wants a Stanley Cup winning team....that can compete for the Cup for many years.

Deano is winning out.....and so will the Kings.

<---Glad no Kovy here....glad no Brad Richards here.

Wow...so, if Lombardi is going in purposely trying to NOT get the player his bosses want signed and just giving a "token" half-baked effort...I dunno, is that insubordination...?

Why is he still working for the Kings?

Personally, I think your team ducked a bullet by Brad wanting to play on Broadway and be reunited with Torch...

Who said he was not trying to get the player? Oh yea...YOU did.

Lombardi did not want Brad, but AEG did.....AEG is Lombardi's employer. Sure Lombardi can up and quit...but that's not what happened. IMHO....I think Deano knew (just like most people) that L.A. did not really have a shot....even though Uncle Phil wanted Brad badley and sent his right hand man Tim to the big show, but it was never going to happen.

What happened with ownership pushing on Deano in pursuing a player happens all the time. You are a pretty big sports fan, you should know this.

Deano's plan is working perfectly.

Deano's mantra for years (and over multiple or-gan-eye-zations) has been the same......if they signed Brad for ungodly cap-hell money.....he would have some serious "splaining" to do.

All of the sudden Deano would go all Jekyl & Hyde.....only one reason that would happen: Ownership.

Deano and the Kings are sitting pretty.

KABERLE INKS THREE-YEAR, $12.75 MILLION DEAL WITH HURRICANES

Tomas Kaberle has signed a three-year, $12.75 million deal to play for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Kaberle had been the longest tenured member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, before being dealt at the trade deadline to the Boston Bruins. He helped Boston win their first Stanley Cup since 1971-72.

He had four goals and 43 assists between the two teams last season, and played all 82 games.

The 33-year-old from the Czech Republic has 84 goals and 445 assists in 902 career games.
I wonder what if anything Boston offered.
