NHL to realign for 2012-13
Well, dom and Waldorf can renew their fight...
Story from ESPN...
Story from ESPN...
The return of the Winnipeg Jets to the NHL will create a ripple effect throughout the league with a dramatic realignment for the 2012-13 season as a result, multiple media outlets have reported.
Winnipeg, which is the new home of the relocated Atlanta Thrashers, will play the upcoming 2011-12 season in the Eastern Conference's Southeast Division despite being 70 miles north of Minnesota.
The Jets' division features the Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes.
With Western Conference teams Detroit, Nashville and Columbus hoping to be relocated to the East, the NHL has opted to realign the entire league rather than shifting Winnipeg, according to the Sporting News.
The purveying plan seeks to divide the league into four divisions -- two with eight teams and two with seven teams. The plan will likely be finalized at December's Board of Governors meeting.
Commissioner Gary Bettman hinted at changes to come in his annual state-of-the-NHL address before the Stanley Cup finals opener earlier this month.
"All those clubs need an opportunity to be heard," Bettman said. "That's a process we'll go through the first half of next season, looking at the issues that clubs want to raise, looking at various possibilities, and trying to figure out what will make the most sense moving forward."

Kings to the East, Islanders to the West
That seems like the most likely move the count would make

Three Wheelin'
If it's center depth, your team has it in spades...and got back someone in Microscopic-Schenn who will be propped with the remaining cast.
I think your team will be okay.
The leadership department is definitely going to be different now with both Carter and Richards gone. I'm guessing Kimmo and Pronger will be the ones to be named in replacement of the traded...?

Looks like we were both wrong.
I don't think there will be an East-West anymore? Return of Cambell's and Wales? Should be interesting if there's 1 division form the East and West per conference.
And let down by Eklund again. But he's always been so trustworthy?

So, Statler.....from all the local Edmonton media articles (Sun & Journal), they make it seem like the Smyth trade is like the present day "reverse Gretzky" deal for the club/city.
Were they shooting off fireworks too?
Peeps partying and getting in the streets?
When is the Captain Canada parade?

If so I'm glad the B's got to exploit that little flaw in the system one last time and came away with all the marbles.

They could be dangerous this year and Smyth may be the leadership the kids need. Still...not sure if there's enough grit on the team.

One of my fave players from my childhood, Ed Belfour, will find out if he gets into the HoF today...
I think I still have a couple of his posters somewhere at my Mom's stored in the basement.

Brian Burke said he will not sign a player to one those contracts that circumvents the cap (9-12 year deal) No Brad Richards in Toronto.

I might be wrong, but I have a feeling Brad Richards will not be signed on day 1.....it may linger for a while.

Disagree. Bettman and his very good buddy at the time, McNall had Fraser in his pocket. What other explanation can you possibly have for that missed call?
/conspiracy.
It is sad that I truly believe that's what happened?

^^ Delusions of grandeur.
What's sad is that to this day, Leafs fans still can't get over the "missed call"....meanwhile I'd guess that most long time Kings fans don't even remember the "incident".......but I guess when you team folds like a cheap suit on home ice, you gotta have a scapegoat.
Leafs lost game 7 on their ice......"missed call" or not....if you can't win game 7 at home...you don't deserve to win.
Gretzky schooled the Leafs.

The missed call was in their heads in game 7. Interesting that Fraser landed a job at the "Unofficial Network of the NHL", TSN directly out of retirement. Coincidence? I think not.

Hulsizer withdraws bid to purchase Coyotes
Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer has withdrawn his bid to become the new owner for the Phoenix Coyotes. However, the Coyotes, the City of Glendale and the National Hockey League remain optimistic that a qualified local buyer will emerge to keep the team in Jobing.com Arena beyond the 2011-12 season.
"The City of Glendale and the National Hockey League continue to negotiate with other interested parties to secure new ownership for the Phoenix Coyotes," the club said in a statement released by its public relations staff. "The objective continues to be to transition ownership of the club to an interested purchaser in the coming months."
The NHL will continue to operate the Coyotes until the team is sold, but the City of Glendale has committed $25 million to cover any losses and keep the team in Jobing.com Arena for the 2011-12 season.
"The Hulsizer decision to withdraw was related to the City of Glendale's decision to pursue a different deal structure -- a structure that several interested purchasers have indicated an interest in pursuing," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told NHL.com. "So, while we are disappointed for Matt that he chose not to continue his pursuit, the development does not represent a step backwards in the process. We are still pushing toward a sale at the earliest possible date."
Daly said the different deal structure "does not contemplate a municipal bond offering," which is a change from the structure of the now abandoned Hulsizer deal.

Please. That LA team had the backing of Gary. McNall had Bettman in his pocket since it was him that got Gary the job.
Its a miracle Montreal beat them . LA was tired and beat up from stealing the series from the juggernaut Leafs who had the true MVP of the 93 season in their lineup.
They had no gas left to complete the thievery handed to them by Gary and Bruce.

NBCUniversal getting into superhero biz
Comcast's NBCUniversal is getting into the superhero business.
The media giant has entered into a venture with Guardian Media Entertainment, parent of the Guardian Project, a new franchise of superheroes created by Stan Lee and done in partnership with the National Hockey League.
The Guardian Project was unveiled earlier this year during the NHL All-Star game, which was carried by NBCUniversal's Versus cable channel. The characters are named for the 30 hockey teams in the league and will be used as a promotional tool for the sport.
As part of the agreement, NBCUniversal will promote the Guardian Project on its various media platforms. In return, NBCUniversal is getting an equity stake in Guardian Media Entertainment. Content that could emerge from the venture include graphic novels, television series and movies.
The deal deepens the relationship between NBCUniversal and the NHL. NBC recently extended its deal to carry the television rights for the NHL on both its broadcast and cable properties through the next 10 years.
“Since the inception of GME, our goal has been to partner with a major media company that has broadly distributed consumer platforms to exponentially increase the awareness and scope of The Guardian Project,” said Mark Terry, chief operating officer of GME.
“We’re starting a conversation with the next generation of NHL fans and NBCUniversal’s strength as a global media company, its commitment to hockey and its proven track record of leveraging sports and entertainment will elevate The Guardian Project within the NHL fan base and beyond,” said Brian Jennings, the NHL's executive vice president of marketing.

Not sure what's so funny?
That 93 Leaf team should have won the cup and will probably be the last Leaf team to get that close. I'll take that to the grave. Too bad Pat Burns isn't going in to the Hall with Gilmour. Another robbery. I'm sure he'll get in sooner or later.

Kariya Retires
Paul Kariya has decided to retire after 15 seasons in the NHL.
Kariya sat out the entire 2010-11 season recovering from post-concussion symptoms. He last suited up for the St. Louis Blues in 2009-10.
Kariya finishes his career with 402 goals and 587 assists in 989 games. Kariya spent time with the Blues, Predators, Avalanche after spending the first nine seasons of his career with the Mighty Ducks.
He was selected by the Mighty Ducks with the fourth pick overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.
Kariya had intended to return to the ice next season but his doctors advised him against it due to his concussion history.
His best season came in 1995-96, his second in the NHL, where he scored 50 goals and 108 points.
He was a two-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship, and was selected to the NHL's first all-star team three times (1996, 1997 and 1999) and the second team twice (2000, 2003).
He also appeared in six All-Star games in his career and led the Mighty Ducks to within one game of the Stanley Cup in 2003.
Internationally Kariya competed for Team Canada in two Olympics winning a silver medal in 1994 and winning Gold in 2002. He was selected to the 1998 Canadian Olympic team as well, but couldn't compete after suffering a concussion on a crosscheck by Gary Suter shortly before he was supposed to head to Nagano.

Thought he was already retired. Once a great player, probably considered top 3 in the game for a very short period of time.
