The sizzle in the Steak
Kings trade conditional pick for Marco Sturm
Senior Moderator
^ Would he solve your winger issues...? I know he's a decent 2-way player, though.
And oh, hope your team slaps the Brown Things up and down the ice this weekend.

^^ Maybe....but he's at least 2 weeks out.....but at least he plays LEFT wing
There is really no risk in acquiring Sturm...minimal cap hit, and a rumored 5th rounder in return.

Caps Finally Getting It?

The Great 8 of the Washington Capitals is 0-for-8. As in no goals in eight games. And this is a good thing? Yup.
Washington continues to roll over its opponents with a startling array of offensive weapons. Nothing new there, but it is new that Alex Ovechkin isn't the one lighting the lamp.
Not that Ovie isn't contributing. In St. Louis Wednesday night, he was very visible. A couple of big hits, a couple of great plays including the empty-net assist. Big play on an empty-net assist? You betcha. I am sure no one is more aware of his goal drought than Ovechkin but as he crossed the blue-line and danced around a defender, the big guy spotted Nicklas Backstrom streaking to the net. He feathered a pass to his centre, who happily tapped it in. Nice!
It's a great sign for the Caps who have seemed more interested in playing keep away than hockey. And Ovie's unselfishness is not the only one.
Alex Semin is on fire. Backstrom is keeping pace. But more importantly, Semyon Varlamov is beginning to play like an upper-echelon goaltender. Maybe 37 saves is probably a few too many to make as he did against the Blues, but make them he did. And with that the Caps won their fourth straight.
McPhee's about face
The best sign of all? General manager George McPhee's acquisition of Scott Hannan. Hannan's arrival in and of itself is nothing to get too wild about. Many of my colleagues would argue that he has lost too much foot speed to be very effective. However, it is the whole notion that the organization recognizes the value of a steady, depth defenceman.
In an about face, McPhee even admitted that the Caps had focused too much on the offensive side of the equation last year. Hallelujah, brother, and pass the mustard! Refreshing public admission that his team needs to focus a little on the back end.
Unselfish team play. A captain leading by example. A goaltender emerging. Organizational self-criticism that is spot on. Gotta like the trend if you like the Caps and you have to be concerned if you're not.
For my money, the only thing standing in the way of a deep playoff run is the Capitals' own attitude to the game and that seems to be going in the right direction, too.

B's shipped Matt Hunwick to Colorado earlier in the week for a kid who'll be playing in the minors. Sturm is a great player who skates very well and can be a huge asset to a penalty kill but a scoring threat as well. The problem with him (at least while he was with the B's) is that he is very fragile.
I feel the need...
LFG RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!

The Rangers barely squeeked out a win against the powerhouse Islanders!!!!!!!

Wow...Oilers took it to the Leafs.
Really Milbury... give me a break.
McPhee isn't making an about face, he has wanted the past two season to get a blue liner, but wasn't going to give up the team, to get one people thought he should. I remember Milbury saying that they didn't have a net minder either and they have three to do the job.

ouch.. I have to admit it has to be hard to watch them be so horrible and not even get the pick at the end of the year. The Bruins have been abusing the Leafs for years in trades..
Is Phanuef back yet? Still injured?

Oh and fuck the rangers and their fans. All they do is complain and say the NHL is rigged against them. Nice job squeaking by the worst team in hockey.

Nice goaltending by the Bolts...

Savard and Seguin looked pretty good together last night.

Lesson for the young goaltenders, don't cheat to the corner until the puck is dumped in.

Yep, premature reports...No trade in place.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=343821
The Boston Bruins released a statement regarding speculation that Marco Sturm is set to be traded to the Los Angeles Kings.
"I am aware of the various media reports today regarding Marco Sturm. I can confirm that I spoke to Marco about waiving his no trade clause and have had discussions regarding Marco with other teams. I can also confirm that there is no trade in place with Marco. At this time, Marco is a member of the Boston Bruins and will continue to train with our team," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a team statement.
It's been speculated that the Bruins are set to trade the 32-year-old to the Kings for a conditional draft pick, with the deal being held up by some medical issues that need to be addressed.
Sturm has reportedly waived his no-trade clause.
The veteran left winger has not played this year after having off-season ACL and MCL knee surgery, but returned to practice with the Bruins this week. He is currently two-to-three weeks away from returning to game action.
Sturm is an unrestricted free agent at end of this season, and carries a cap hit of $3.5 million.
The trade would send the winger back to California, where he began his career with the San Jose Sharks and played his first seven seasons before being dealt to Boston as part of the Joe Thornton trade in 2005.
Last season, Sturm scored 22 goals and 15 assists in 76 games for the Bruins. He also had one assist in four games for Germany at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Sturm was a first-round pick (21st overall) by the Sharks in 1996.

I listen to McPhee for almost 20 minutes on local radio the day after the trade, never heard him say anything about an about face. Heard him say that he has wanted to get a good defensemen w/o blowing the rooster up. Something he has said many times over the last couple of years.

The sizzle in the Steak
Millbury said flat out they thought Sturm was traded to L.A.
Krejci said that Sturm came around the room and said his good-byes, thanks and such to all yesterday.
It appears the deal was a trigger pull away.....Lombardi claims not so much....but he never shows his cards.
I guess we will never know.

I predict classless transplants in red try to invade the Staples Center.
Let's see if the Kings finally pulled out of their slump.
Could the Wings be the first visiting team this year to score on a power play at Staples?
NOPE! Go Kings!!!

Fawk Me.
Can someone kindly explain the feeling of hope in a hockey team.
Explain what it feels like to win
Explain what it feels like to have a chance
Explain how a team, no matter who's in charge can fawk up every thing they do and touch.
I gave up last week, but now I may have to cancel my cable subscription.

Probably no hope per se until after next season when you guys finally have a first rounder...provided the team is not stupid enough to give that up either.
Then again, not sure how I feel about the Leafs drafting history overall. The decent ones they did nab in recent memory are few...Schenn looks to be a good one in time.

I don't know what it feels like to be a fan of a team that has at least one Stanley Cup Championship.

I dunno...seems to me that Lombardi's just a bit too in love with his prospects/picks. The window of opportunity to win one is small in the cap era...And I think your team's best chances are now.
