^ Was there ever any doubt that Ovechkin would not score 50 goals?

Steve Larmer, Denis Savard, Patrick Kane, Jeremy Roenick, Chris Chelios, two 1st rounders, and Brent Seabrook for Alex Ovechkin.

Not at all...make that 51 now. I could see him scoring 70 this year.

Last week in Fantasy Hockey before playoffs start.. I'm glad not to be playing against Ovechicken this week. Another goal.

Very unusual to pull a goalie when his team has the lead, however they were up by 5 or 6 goals at the time...might as well get Olie the Goalie some work. I don't know how they are gonna split the time between Huet and Oli...maybe Oli gets a start every few games, but then you also throw in the veteran Johnson. Should be interesting, me thinks 3 capable goalies is too many

BUT for the game of hockey, it's guys like ovechkin that will gain the fans and bring more attention to the game. malkin is not half as entertaining to watch as ovechkin. not saying he is any less of a player though.

See that's where you're wrong. I go to DC to visit my sister and attend Caps games. I go to see Ovechicken. To say Malkin or Crosby aren't half as entertaining is ridiculous. I did like the "from the point of view from someone who plays" like that made the statement that much more credible. It's like Moog speaking for JMFJ.

We all know you're a Pens hater.

You're also wrong about fans and attention to the game because for #1 we all know Crosby has done that so far and not Ovechicken. But that's just me needling you.

The real reason they come to the game is competition and rivalry. I'm sure you know and remember these. When the game is at it's peek there's two great players going head to head.

Lemieux vs Gretzky. Jordan Vs Magic. Magic vs Bird. etc etc etc.

And a bunch of idiots arguing online who's better..

... like we are doing. ;]

i'm not a pens hater, i think the pens have a very exciting team and have a ton of potential. i see them play a lot and i see the caps play a lot. imo - caps are more entertaining, ovech is more entertaining. shrugs. i'm talking about it from a perspective of people who are just looking at hockey and saying its boring, not from people who like hockey. if hockey wants to gain the recognition from the public they need the entertainment factor. there are tons of band wagon baseball, football, and baseball fans. you don't get that a lotin hockey unless your hometown team is doing something interesting OR you have a hot player. when crosby and ovech's name get dropped in the news, maybe people start watching that didn't normally watch a lot. from my point of view, if i saw both, i'd say the caps and ovech are more entertaining to watch. but you can't interview either ovechkin or malkin, they both barely speak english and have the personality of a brick wall. a least sid is well spoken.

Crosby is definitely entertaining because he can easily take over a game single-handedly and almost always plays with a spark (like Gretzky). However, Crosby doesn't hit, doesn't like to get hit, and is sometimes whiny.

Ovechkin's play is absolutely amazing. He's physical as hell and will punish players with big hits. He's fucking scary and all the big guys know it. If he's not laying the smackdown on you, he's skating circles around you or making you look like an ass with unbelievable stick/puck handling.

Only reason I disagree...

Have you heard/seen Ovechkin off the ice? You need to attract people to the arena with what you do off the ice as much as what you do on it. Ovechkin is absolutely useless off of it. (Or on it when doing All-Star skills competition interviews. )

Crosby = face of the NHL.

Crosby will bring people in who know nothing about hockey.

Ovechkin will amaze people who have been watching/playing for a while.

True. Just like there's a Joe Montana / Tom Brady group and a Steve Young / Brett Favre group.

Serious question..

What is Ovechickens NHL lifespan?

Can he throw his body around and it not take a toll on his career?

When while the concussions start?

He does not play like Lindros IMO...so, if he keeps at it, he can maintain a high level of skill and physical play well into his 30s a la Messier.

What? Are you saying he should play like a pussy? Dude, if this is your only knock on Ovechkin, you're seriously reaching.

Who says I'm trying to "knock" the guy? It's a question. I'm not reaching for anything nor am I insinuating he should play softer. Stop reading to far into things.

Edit - Normally a guy with his intensity and physical play is on the 3rd or 4th line. I can't think of anyone off hand that plays the way he does and is also a top scorer. Which equals more playing time per game. Probably twice as many minutes as a normal high energy checking guy.

So I'm seriously asking the question how long do you think he can sustain at the level he's playing at?

And just because I live in Pittsburgh doesn't mean I think Crosby/Malkin > Ovechicken. I already pointed out they are totally different players and yes I've probably attended more Ovechicken games then you have

I'd say as far as lifespan goes...its next to impossible to predict it correctly. Lets compare Ovechkin and Crosby while we are at it in terms of lifespan....You'd think the way Crosby plays he'll play at the same type of level for most of his career, not have that much of a decrease in production in his few years before retirement. The way I see it with Ovechkin, the way he plays that physical/powerful type he'll decline quicker than Crosby. IMO shouldn't even compare the two...two completely different players.

edit: I just reread that, it doesn't come out on paper the way I'm trying to explain it...but hopefully you guys understand where Im coming from

i've honestly thought about that since day 1, while it's rare for a bruiser to have a long career it's not entirely impossible. the thing is i think he can produce in his later career without having to be such a hard checker, he has the talent for both. if he continues this pace the lifespan for such a physical player is usually around 8-10 seasons. if he doesn't suffer any major injuries i think he can play close to double that given his skills. let's just hope for the sake of hockey he doesn't lose that hunger like many of the highly skilled players.

Ovechkin is nuts... I would kill to have him on my team...

I was playin NHL 08 the other day and with the Russian National team had a lineup of him, Kovlachuk, Datsyuk up front...
