Yup, with Sayghin and Ben on the 1st line, Spezza and Hemsky would be nice on the 2nd line.

All in all, the Western conference got pretty strong. I like what Anaheim did and the St. Louis Blues can only get better now that Stastny is there.

So what you're saying is....the Finlandians are so desperate for decent players they have to poach from Estonia to fill out their roster?

Nah, the one time he won anything he refused to shake hands with the big boys on the other team. He's far too much of a coward to threaten anyone.

Interesting because the guy with the bag of hats was at the end of the handshake line, once you went through he pulled a hat out of the bag. Only guy wearing a hat in the line is the back up goaltender.

Here's the line, where's Crosby?

Leaves sign another Finlandian. Petri Kontiola, played in the K last year. Just deliver Lord Stanley to Toronto now. Obviously Dave Nonis has been reading this thread.

He's a real Finlandian

He played a few games for the Cawks back in the day, then mired in the AHL before heading to the KHL. He seems like a late bloomer.

Yessir...a very late pick...like the 6th or 7th round, I recall. His name was familiar when I heard it over the radio on the drive home.

You guys read this?

The word “respect” gets used a lot in NHL circles. But sometimes in hockey’s top league, respect is a nebulous concept: one player’s idea of competing hard and gaining an advantage is another player’s idea of a vicious slight. Here’s an previously-untold example:

It was the 2001-02 season – Sean Avery’s rookie NHL campaign – and his Detroit Red Wings were taking on the defending-champion Colorado Avalanche. Avery’s reputation as a big-time trash-talker already was well established from his formative years in the Ontario League – and when Avs captain and Hockey Hall-of-Famer Joe Sakic lined up near the Wings bench before a faceoff, Avery stood up and yelled at Sakic to get his attention.

However, in the two or three seconds it took Sakic to turn his head toward Avery, Red Wings veteran and star winger Brett Hull stood up, reached around another Detroit player, grabbed Avery by the back of the jersey and unceremoniously yanked him back to the seated position before he could utter another word.

“You do not get to talk to Mr. Sakic,” Hull said.

And that was that.

“I was like, ‘Look, you have not earned the right or anything else to be able to talk to Joe Sakic in any manner,’ ” Hull said in a phone conversation late last week. “No matter what (Avery) was going to say, it was not going to be good.”

Even though Sakic was a key member of a team with which the Wings had developed a heated rivalry, Avery was not going to be allowed to drag things into the gutter. This was hockey policing itself without an enforcer.

“With the guys we had on our team – myself, Brendan (Shanahan) and Stevie (Yzerman) – guys played hard and played to win, but when we played Colorado and all the other great teams, we had a lot of respect for them,” Hull said. “They were champions and unbelievable players. And I just never believed in all that chirping anyway.”

I almost forgot Avery played a couple of seasons in Detroit. Nice find yummy cakes.

All quiet on the Western Front...

I hope Moogelino is enjoying his summer vacation, surely was expecting some pics of him partying with the cup along with and Doty. I almost feel deprived. Almost.

Poor Iggy, he could have retired as the beloved lifetime Captain in Calgary without a cup, but still widely respected. At least Hossa found his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Good thing ultra-alfie will get his cup this season.

Hey, black label...reading lately about how the Bruins gave up on Seguin too soon. Is that the sentiment over in Beantown? Or did he have to get traded to get better...?

Boston is a far different environment and different style of play than Dallas. See how Seguin's production skyrocketed in Dallas? See how Ericsson's dropped off in Boston?

Claude keeps the risk/reward factor in check. We could trade Seguin and Ericsson back and see how there production goes back as well. Regardless of talent, Seguin wasn't willing to do all the things that will keep you on the Bruins (similar to Kessel). All the things the last 4 capitals coaches complained about Ovechkin would have gotten him traded off the Bruins 2 coaches ago.

In reality the final straw was that the Bruins signed him to a contract extension that gave him a significant pay raise in the 13/14 season and then realized he wasn't worth (to the Bruins) what they were going to have to pay him.

The B's are starting to gain a reputation for it. They've traded away a #1 pick, a #2 pick and a #5 pick in recent years. At this point jumbo joe, Phil the thrill, and Seguin the wino have not brought Stanley cup glory to their new teams. Seguin is probably closest to being on a cup winner but IMO that's a factor of what Dallas did this off season, not because they picked him up in the last one.

Ehhhhh...well, this is where I need to say hang on. Aside from Moog who will tell you it's either 1) Carter 2) Quick 3) Doty 4) Kopidor 5) or 6) Maid Marian who single-handedly won the Cup for LA, hockey is more than anything...a team sport. Actually, I take back my comment about the Kings. It's Quick, Quick, and always Quick...there is no goal that Quick lets in that is ever his fault.

Like, you can't say the Bruins won their Cup single-handedly because of one player could you? I know I can't for Chicago's 2 recent Cups...sure, you have a couple of players that stands out and are in the Conn Smythe conversation with only one selected to win...but, it is about the 3rd and 4th lines providing depth scoring or some unsung hero (i.e. Bickell for Hawks recently or Byfuglien in 2009) that scores those timely goals...

So, what I'm saying is, short of Thornton, you can't say that Seguin and One-Sack Phil has had a very deep team to play on that was meant to contend...I'd say, time will tell.

I mean, if it were all about the best player on the planet, the Pens should've been on a Cup win streak since their first one with Sid, right?

(Aight, I'm SURE my nonsense up here will REALLY draw out Moog to tell me how wrong I am! )
