I don't think there has been any major surprises in this tournament. All the favorites are still alive.

Germany
England
Argentina
Portugal
Italy
Brazil
France
Spain

Maybe the sideline officials should have more say, or they should actually give out the cards for acting (like they were supposed to.) It looked like Italy's second half strategy was to get Cahill out of the game by goading him into a card, thus evening the match 10-10.

As for the US being sore losers, I don't think so. There were some bad calls in their matches, but they would not have made it through regardless and it seems to me our players took it well.

2nd ref in addition to the linepersons? running a duo is usually a mistake and you get a lot more bad calls running that system. if you have 4 refs on the field I still dont really think it will make a difference, as there is a lot of discretion over the calls...if anything that will lead to more problems and possible disagreements between the officials.

The NHL uses two ref's, seems to work for them. Then again you want more calls in the NHL while is soccer less would be better.

It's hard to tell if the refs are getting the calls wrong or just not seeing them.

Hockey is a whole 'nother animal. Can you imagine Todd Bertuzzi laying on the ice holding his shin, trying to entice a 2 min tripping penalty? When the guys come onto the ice with stretchers they don't have "DOC" on the back, they read "MORGUE" .

I think offsides need to be monitored by video replay. There is no way linesmen can get it right, because by the time they switch their vision from downfield to their line upfield, it is too late to determine if it is offsides. There should be a 3rd linesman working on Tivo and analyze the play from the booth. They should let the play continue, and make an offside decision after the play is over.

^-linesmen are supposed to stay with the last defender and watch the play from there. it will be too much like football if you have replys and shit like that.

But should the clock stop while they review the play?

The reviews should last no more than 5 seconds. C'mon FIFA, everyone with ESPN can make the right judgement on tv replays.

BTW, FIFA also needs to give the refs some kind of special whistle that can't be replicated. That way when everyone in the crowd starts blowing a whistle I don't get confused

^ Maybe. I'm not sure who he is b/c I really didn't watch the Ukraine in the group games... but from what I did see they urked me. It may be b/c I caught one of the end of their games and it was the way they killed time at the end (by pretending to be hurt every time they were touched, even if it was barely).

Wow, how was that a no-call. Not only was he tripped, but he was pulled down. Should be a card on Ukraine.

2 refs on field and 2 linesman..

I was a ref for about 5 years and it was easier with 2 refs.. You could see the field easier then running all over the place and not having position to make the call. Refs could also take a little more time in talking / warning players when things get out of hand.. The only control these refs are using is cards.. And I can't blame them once things get out of hand..

You would try to keep the same ref crews out there for consistiency.

True, but we have to sit through 30 minutes of OT before seeing some good action. What a boring game...
