That was totally a foul. He juked him out of his shorts, the guy slid, then took him down with his shoulders/arm after he was beat...

If the defender stays on his feet he stops the attack and there's no penalty.

You can't take someone out b/c he beat you... especially in the penalty box

Damn, now we have to hear Wynalda blab about it...

If anything he was trying to duck out of the way and let him past.. I didn't see a foul.. I saw some acting though..

What about the two hand balls in the box they didn't call? wtf..

Bottom line is he took him down. Even if he was trying to get out of the way it didn't look that way. He should not have slid for the ball. One of the first rules of soccer... do not leave your feet.

But the officiating has been horrible all tourney, so the fact that hand balls were missed isn't a surprised to anyone...

Good game by the Aussies. I can't tell if the Aussies are cheering or rioting.

Read my reply above, I thought they were rioting.... turns out that the video is of the "Little Italy" section of Sydney... so they're cheering.

Really through me off too

I'm at work, so I'm only watching it on ESPN and I have no audio. Threw me off too. It looked weird, because they were jumping up and down, not throwing stuff.

So Italy gets the winner of Switzerland vs. Ukraine. That should be an easy one for Italy, despite not having Matrix available.

I think he went down trying to block the shooting and passing lane.. Big mistake.. I don't think he fouled him though.

The way the Refs have been calling this tourney is a fuckin disgrace.. All you see is acting or grabbing.. One extreme or the other..

They really need to go to a 2 Ref system at the very least and I'm not talking a sideline ref. The last thing you need is for a sideline ref to make calls..

And I don't know how you miss two handballs..

Wow, caught the second half, bad call IMO but at the result. The way I see it Italy gets revenge for a bs offside call back in the 02 tourney vs S.Korea.

They just showed the replay again... when Totti tried to jump over the defender after he beat him he leans his left arm and shoulder into his leg taking him down.

I don't know.. looked like a foul to me.

They could barely handle the Aussies. No game will be easy in this tourney unless your name is Brazil.

Yeah, the home side always get the benefit of the doubt. That's why I have a feeling Germany will beat Argentina.

How can you say that was a bad call? the ref had to call that. The guy went down, didnt touch the ball, and interfered we the opposition players movement towrds the net. When this happens in the box its a PK. Done.

Ya it wasnt a viscious tackle, but i dont think the ref had much choice. IMO the red card was a much worse call. But overall i didnt think the ref was that bad today.

I agree with the disgrace part. However, it seems that the acting and theatrics are actually part of the game, which I, as an American cannot stand. This sport will never win over this continent with so much relying on referees' judgement calls. That Portugese captain Figo should be hanging his head in shame for the crap he pulled yesterday, instead he's a hero.

The Americans were done in by 1. bad coaching tactics and 2. lack of acting and writhing on the ground skills.

Is that the definition of the rule? I really don't know. I understood that any incidental contact anywhere on the field is not a penalty. The Aussie slid, but didn't grab or make any attempt IMO to trip the player. His foot hit the Aussies belly and tripped him up.

If thats the rule then it was a good call.

BTW - In the chaos that ensued in the restaurant I was at when that happened I couldn't figure out who the Italian that was tripped up was?

I'm at work so I can only follow the games via stats on the net .
http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/...nth=6&day=&day
Stats
ITA AUS
6 Shots on Goal 4
11 Shots 8
17 Fouls 26
2 Corner Kicks 2
1 Free Kicks 1
2 Offsides 2
0 Own Goals 0
3 Yellow Cards 3
1 Red Cards 0
41% Ball Possession 59%
When they say "free kicks" do they mean "penalty kicks"?

So are handballs but the ref didn't have the balls to call those.. Atleast call the game consistent..

And that isn't a rule..

That was Grosso, which is amazing since he's a defender.

I dont know about the technical definition of the rule, but how can a ref not call that? The defender got beat. If he didnt go down like that, italy would have had a clean break on the net.

It was a fair call.

Just about every sport is like that.. They need to do something about it.. They need a second ref on the field..

From playing the sport it's not easy to keep your balance with people sliding at your feet and pushing. But yes I've seen Way too much acting..

And why the fawk do the winners of todays games play Friday and the winners of yesterdays games play Saturday? That makes no sense and is yet another game I'm going to miss.
