You didn't want to keep the hardwoods instead of carpeting over them?

I do like the color of the new carpet but those hardwoods look great.

I would love to keep the hardwoods, I've wanted to keep them for 8 years since I bought the house. But after seeing how destroyed my carpet got from the dogs, I know I made the right choice. The carpets are to protect the hard wood from the dogs' claws

 

Was going to ask why not keep the hardwoods...figured it was the dogs LOL. The carpet does look good, though.

 

Do they really tear up hard wood? I have a buddy who has 3 great danes and his floor has held up. I'm sure your dogs are crazy af though.

I think it depends on the type of hardwood (how "hard" the wood is). My parents have a hardwood floor in the kitchen of their vacation home...I can't remember the type of wood...and in certain light you can see marks all over the place from dog nails and dropping things and whatnot. It doesn't look terrible, but definitely not ideal. My dad got the wood for free so they didn't really care.

We have a dog (and will be getting a second in the near future) and will probably do either laminate or tile in everywhere but the bedrooms and keep carpet in the bedrooms.

 

I don't care what kind of urethane that I could put down, after 8 years of dog claws, I know the wood would be scratched to hell. My female likes to play fetch and actually wore a hole through the seam in the hallway of the carpet from so many years of sliding across the carpet with her claws.

^This is my biggest concern. The hardwood is gorgeous and irreplaceable. The last thing that I want to do is ruin it. I always said that if the house goes on the market, I'll just rip up the carpets and polish up the hardwoods and it should be an easy sell, until then, carpets all the way.

 

So, a few small updates from the long weekend.

After the carpet install, I couldn't get the media server DVR working in my living room. I had a Verizon tech scheduled to come out on Saturday. While I was waiting to hear from them on an ETA. I moved the media server back out to the living room and hooked it up for troubleshooting and the darn thing started working. Upon further inspection, I discovered that the carpet installer had cut all the way through the copper line with his razor knife while cutting the carpet to size...

I had already cancelled the tech appointment because the cable was working when I hooked it up, before I discovered the cut in the line. At this point I was not willing to pay 100 bucks just for them to come onsite which would have had to wait another week, so I headed to Home Depot. I hadn't crimped a coax cable since the late 90's during the end of the token ring days, and didn't have any tools or coax ends. So I got a $12 coax wire stripper and a set of ends for like $5 and headed home. Removed the cut line, and made myself a new wire end

Easy and cheap fix, and the picture looks even better than it did before. Just wish I would have found this last week so I didn't have to move the DVR server to my bedroom for it to work

 

I also finally assembled the TV stand that I bought back in March that was waiting on the carpet to be installed. The box weighed 100 lbs, but I moved it from the garage around my house by myself using a dolly, and slid it in to the dining room and went to work. Assembly took me about 2 hrs, but that was because I took my time to ensure that I didn't get styrofoam pieces all over the new carpet. Assembly was actually very straightforward and I'm very pleased so far.

It was late and I was heading to bed whenever my buddy stopped by to help me move the 100 lb TV, so I just snapped a quick picture in the dark. I'll take a better one once I get the surround sound and other peripherals set back up.

Glad you figured out the coax Ack, I was going to suggest finding the cut, crimping both ends and just use a coupler as well!

I didn't realize that the line was cut at first, he shoved all the excess wire into the floor, and I was assuming that he broke the copper line somewhere in the floor. I got lucky that it was cut about a foot back from the plug so a new cable didn't have to be run.

 

The screw-on F-Connector was the best coax related invention ever. Glad it was an obvious break!

Yeah, I have used them before, but not in a long while, definitely was a good $20 spent to fix my issue.

Yep, finished the wall and firepit, took 2 grand for "fence materials" and then quit answering my phone calls

 

I think small claims court will be happening soon. Or just show up with one of your toys in your safe at his place of business.

 

He's already been threatened with legal action. He has 1 chance to make things right or I'm coming after him

I paid a guy to pave a nice sized area along the side yard, back yard, and front yard of my old house. The job was more-or-less done except that in one area he decided to cut in joint lines with a saw after the fact instead of using a joint tool when the concrete was wet. Of course, I assumed he would come back and actually do it...nope. He disappeared off the face of the earth. By the time he responded to my complaints, the concrete had already cracked and I was in the process of selling.

 

Actually, that's how all the professionals have been doing driveways around my area. They pour the driveways in two halves then quarter them with a saw. I was led to believe this is actually the better way. No?

 

I really don't know. I would have to guess that they're equal in terms of function. I like the look of using a joint tool more than the saw cut...but I suppose it depends on the look you're going for. If you're going for more of a stone look, the rough edge may look better. All my concrete has always been a simple broom finish. In any rate, it's the fact he didn't come back and do it that peeves me. But it's all good...we no longer own that house.

 

Got a text from the landscaper guy with a picture of my fence permit! Looks like my yard may actually get finished one of these days
