Back Door Help

Long story short I have to put a doggy door in but my existing door is 1 pane of glass.

I need a door 31 3/4 by 79 3/4.

I have called a couple of door people and even got an estimate for $2,400!

Anyone had any luck replacing a back door?

I'm pretty sure that's what most people first thought of.

Bent - what kind of door are you looking for? Something fancy or something basic? Is this something you're considering doing yourself or for sure going to hire someone?

If yourself - you should be able to get (order) something from Lowes or HD that you can install the doggie door into. Might take a little bit of work and you'll need a hand to hang it, but it doesn't need to cost you more than $300

Hire - you could buy a door and hire a carpenter/handyman. Labor might be around $300 (just a guess). Definitely call around before paying someone $2400, though. That is pretty excessive unless you need to replace the jamb and framing.

I had a double back door with transom replaced last year -- it was a custom door that rotted because my builder didn't use a cladded door. Had to buy basically the same thing again, but the guy who installed it also aluminum cladded it.

Total was $3600.

My buddy and his wife were about to have that problem at their new house-- it turned out to be easier and cheaper to put a pet door into the wall through the stucco. It didn't look bad, either, IIRC.
G/L.

I knew the title would get views!

I just want something basic. One window but still basic.

Literally there is no good place to install the doggy door in the wall. Our back padio is covered and is tile so clean up is easy. It would be the perfect place.

If I buy a door from lowers that is 32 by 80 could I plane it down to fit?

Thanks!
Brent

As long as it's a wood door, there should be no problem. Either a plane or a saw blade if you're taking off more than 1/4". I'm pretty sure those are nominal dimensions, anyway, so you may net need to do much, if anything. I think the biggest pain - tedius and time consuming - will be the hinges. Use your existing door to line them up on your new door.

Let us know how it goes.

DO NOT PLANE THE DOOR. Order a custom door from Home Depot or Lowes. They aren't that expensive.

Why not? If it was a fancy, stained, solid wood door, then I would understand you could chip the edges, but if it's a fairly simple painted rear door, then I don't think it would be a problem. To clarify, this mainly applies to top and bottom. I would be a bit hessitant to trim the sides.

Again, I think you need to check the actual dimensions of the doors. They may not be exactly 32x80.

Can you even find a door without a frame?

The opening in the framing of your home is going to be roughed for the "door" -- and will require shimming, but the exterior "door" is generally considered to be the door(s) hung in the frame as an assembled unit. That door is precisely fit to the frame to provide the insulation from the elements required of an exterior door. The doors are much heavier than an interior door, and do not have moveable hinge locations.

Because of the way they are made, I don't think it's generally necessary or desirable to plane an exterior door anymore.
