Well...the S2000 needed more doors, more driven wheels, and a lot more torque...

Jeep got a fresh alignment done, the caster was reset to be a LOT better than before. It's no longer twitchy on the roads, much more stable. Also the toe was quite a lot out...guessing bounding over rocks will do that to you.

On top of that, new bumper is installed! This is before:

And after:

The guy I bought the bumper from must have lost some of the hardware because I'm still missing a bunch of screws to attach the filler plate on the top and two for the side end caps. Nothing that's going to cause stuff to fall off but still needed either way. Will get them on order to finish this off. Also need to extend the wiring for the passenger side fog light since these are spaced out a lot further than the old ones.

Haven't yet decided if I'm going to take the end caps off or not...

Most of the offroad / modification market for Jeeps is a bit much for my liking but, that bumper looks perfect / functional.

I don't feel like you purchased that bumper with the intent of ramming 10 cars out of your way in the event of an apocalypse.

I hear you, there are some people who take it WAY too far. I'm really just going for function over form and don't have really any frivolous mods on this thing. Everything is functional because I'm too cheap to do BS mods lol. I went to this bumper because it's metal and winch capable unlike the one I had before.

Also, and this should come as no surprise to any of you, this bumper is an OE bumper from a Rubicon Hard Rock so it's not an aftermarket bumper.

I'm going to run it as is for a bit and see how I like it. It's just a few screws to remove them so no big deal.

Go figure, you've probably "used" your Jeep more than 90% of the people who take it way too far.

Yup, the JK came in a "Hard Rock" and "Recon" trims that had this bumper. The JL one looks very similar and actually fits the JK but it is ever so slightly different.

Thanks bro, appreciate it! Next step, and first frivolous mod, will be to change out the amber turn signals for some clear ones.

They're staying for now. I grabbed the parts I needed to extend the fog light wiring from work the other day so I can get that wrapped up this weekend.

Welp, it was only a matter of time but my front driveshaft is cooked. The CV boot is ripped and slinging grease all over so it's time for it to go. The JK has a shitty front driveshaft design where the transfer case side joint is a CV and the diff side is a double cardan joint. The CV joint doesn't have enough range of motion to allow it to articulate when you lift it up 3in or more so it's running at its extreme angle all the time. This isn't an issue for mall crawling but the minute you try and go past that for anything off road, it can ruin the joint in short order which is exactly what happened. I knew this was going to be a thing but decided to just run it until it actually had to get replaced.

In any case, new aftermarket front shaft () with double cardan joints on both ends on order so this won't happen again and I can continue to hop curbs every chance I get.

Nice, dude...
don't you kinda dread and look forward to these problems?
Babe, what do you expect me to do...it's BROKEN.
I remember on the TJ there was a SYP or SYK or some shit upgrade
to address more or less the same thing...angle on the driveshaft due to lift.

I definitely dread them lol. I was playing with fire on this one, could have had it fail while out on the trail and that wouldn't have been fun.

Going to go with an Adams driveshaft, should make for a good upgrade. At this point I can't sell this thing ever, I have too much effort (and money) into it lol.

Fallacy...
all cars are sellable
Plus, you got a killer deal on the Rubi to begin with...like 13K or something, no (numbers stick in my head)...
so even if you go 5 grand into repairs and upgrades you'll see the majority of your cash back.
You literally have shoes more expensive.

I paid a lot more than $13k for mine lol. It was $30k but only had 18k miles on it and these things don't depreciate. It's actually worth MORE now than when I bought it even if you don't consider all the mods. In any case, so far I've only put about $500 into actual repairs. $200 for alignment and caster adjustment, $100 diff cover, $200 in oil and fluid changes.

This spring, once it gets consistently nice out, I'm going to give the truck a proper detail, full correction and sealant treatment. Hopefully before the Moab trip. I'm not going to ceramic coat it because it'll just get scratched to shit again next time I take it through the woods.

18k miles, on a 2013 JKU, does not compute
$30k seems a bit of a bargain for such low miles, considering the JK/JL market around here.

Lol yeah, you're not going to get a good condition 2012+ JKUR for $13k with any number of miles. Hell I don't think you'd get any 2012+ JKU for that price. Maybe a wrecked one...

Previous owner bought it to keep at his vacation home in AZ and only drove it around when he was down there. I bought it in 2019. He bought it off the dealer show floor with the Mopar stage 3 lift already on it. Mileage is now up to 26500 and will continue to climb on these trips.

Hopefully SSFTSX takes me up on my offer for Moab, I really want to go!!

Driveshaft on the way, found a Jeep tech who moonlights his own business to install it for $75.

He's really well known in the local Jeep community. Does work for a lot of people. He did my alignment (at the dealership he works at) and turned out awesome. Really great guy.

Is a driveshaft install difficult enough to not DIY? Seems you'd just need to unbolt from the diff, pull from trans & repeat in reverse?
That said, $75 is a bargain, I'm sure, so time > $ in this case. Especially with a new kid.

It's not difficult but it's not super straight forward especially if joints are seized up. It's certainly something J would be able to do in 15 minutes in his driveway. Like you said, for $75 I'm not even going to bother. Something that would take me 3-4 hours to do or pay someone $75 to do it in 30mins is a pretty easy thing to justify.

You know it. If it was $200+ I would have figured out how to DIY and done it.

Drove the Jeep today when it's windy AF outside to see how the new caster adjustment works in adverse conditions and it's night and day better. So much more stable on the road than before, very happy that I spent $200 on a proper alignment and adjustment than $20k on a new Jeep.

Yeah, I think that mentality kinda stuck PLUS I love to know how things go together,
save money AND have that sense of accomplishment.

Anyway, one day I'd love to learn to build furniture too...I have the drive and some of the tools...
just no space and obvi with 4 kids running around 50% of the time and house projects, I have

First car repair work I ever did was brake pads & shoes outside the Beverly Hills H.S swim gym (see it's a Wonderful life dance scene with basketball court opening to a pool) on my '76 B-210 hatchback punishment mobile after getting arrested going 120 in my 440 '72 Challenger on the 405 @ 2am when I was 16. (my choice was living in the Challenger or letting the parents sell it)

Shitty pep boys socket set & Chilton was all I needed, even used the stock scissor jack. lol

I checked out the DIY videos online, doesn't look super hard to install but still just going to get it done. My car time is super limited with the baby now.

Furniture building is just a lot about experience and challenging yourself to do more/better. I just took down the work bench I built 7 years ago and replaced it with a rolling workbench cabinet thing for more storage (pics in home thread soon). I was appalled at some of the shoddy work that was done on that bench lol. It was an epic POS but it's all I knew how to do at the time.

I hear you and will do all of the same things. Eventually she's going to be a little shop apprentice. Will teach her everything I know...starting with how to sweep sawdust lol. Here she is sitting in her chair intently watching dad change the bumper on the Jeep. Don't mind the MDF shade...
