Well...the S2000 needed more doors, more driven wheels, and a lot more torque...

Congrats Sam! Learn a lot from reading this thread, and it's infinitely less insufferable than a certain other one
Heard similar praises from friends who have driven and owned Teslas. Sister and I had a deposit and were going to gift our mom a M3 for her retirement, but mama didn't like it. Her being techno-illiterate was a dealbreaker, but for most or all of here, it's a manageable learning curve.
The improvements over the past few years are very nice, anyway. Solid ownership plan too... strong resale plus consistent iterative improvements, who knows? You may be in another new Tesla 3 years from now.
M3P is the Tesla I would want for myself, so I completely approve. Can't wait for pics!

I still very much enjoy the car but, at the end of the day, it's just not big enough for what I need it to do. I was/am still excited about it and it has definitely served me well. I'm not at all moving on because I no longer like it or have gotten bored with it, I just don't feel good with my wife's knees being part of the crash structure of the car.
White interior is fake leather, it's actually polyurethane and is apparently easy to clean. We're going to find out...
Was this the white one? What wasn't well kept about it? https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/d...7361/overview/
White car wasn't perfect, the black one was though...other than the black color but I could get over that.
Sam did want the Tesla though. That acceleration is intoxicating.

So...to throw a wrench into all this, the BMW dealership called me back and offered $2k more for my trade PLUS $2500 off the car which now makes the M3 cheaper than the Tesla, albeit not by a ton.
I'm going to put this out to you guys for your thoughts on what I should do.
BMW Pros:
- It's a M3, one of my all time dream cars
- Has three pedals
- Way nicer interior
- Winter tires (though not rims) included
- $3k cheaper now
BMW Cons:
- Not much left of warranty
- More expensive to insure and maintain
- Slower
- No tech features
- It's black which isn't an ideal color for me
Tesla Pros:
- Way faster
- Has all the tech features
- Easy to warm up for my short commute
- Cheaper to insure/maintain
- 4 year warranty
Tesla Cons
- Interior isn't nearly as nice though not as bad as some say
- It looks no different than a standard range
- Auto only (obv)
- Would have to buy new winter tires and wheels
- About $3k more expensive
What to do????

I think they're still close enough in price and practicality that you should go for the choice that excites you more. Both can make a good case for being the more exciting option.
Some other notes:
- The days of a 3-pedal daily are dwindling. In the future, you'll have less of an opportunity for cars like the M3 and more opportunity for cars like the Tesla.
- The Tesla is a brand-new car, the M3 is a used car. How important is that?

I'd say drive both back to back, which makes you happiest? That's your answer.
I'd like to say I'd go BMW as a 27 year BMWCCA member but can't honestly say I'd go BMW. The Tesla has many pros.

Tell the BMW people to lick balls. They had their chance and lost. Tell them Elon personally massaged your perineum and see what they're willing to do to get you back as a customer.

It's a g'dang toaster...
You're guaranteed to be able to get an electric vehicle later.
You won't be able to get an ICE with that sort of performance and a clutch pedal.
EV will only get cheaper and better and have more options...give the market some more time. Home fast charging will only get easier and smaller and cheaper.
Maybe even a used Taycan...or a 911 full EV when that becomes and option.
Tell them to throw in a fair price on extended warranty and get the damn M3.

And the last and most obvious reason
1 is already heavily depreciated because it's German.
The other one you're paying full price for.
I don't get why people are jumping on the bandwagon so quickly.
Yes it's fast and seems new age but what else? You're a car guy...
you don't want your car to feel like it has a soul?
And I technically lied, I've been in a 3P before and was wowed by the
acceleration being more violent than the CTS-V
That's not the only factor for driving enjoyment though for a true car
enthusiast.

In regards to new vs used, I don't really care. However, at this point the M3 is already 3.5 years old and will only continue to age. The Tesla is 0 years old and is consistently updated from a software standpoint.

If warranty is thrown in / can be negotiated, the M3 is an attractive option.
But really - what makes you look like more of a douche?
Model 3 Performance or BMW M3 ... that's a tough one! .

I did drive both back to back. To be honest, the EV put a bigger smile on my face. It's way less serious and a lot more "fun" about how it goes about doing things. That said, I'm not sure how much this is a novelty vs something I'd love 3 years from now.

Why wouldn't you go BMW?
I've already talked them down on price and trade, I can try on the warranty front and see what happens. I am inclined to agree though.

I just can't say having the choice that I would not take the Tesla but after the other guys responses I'd say get the M, enjoy it and the clutch.

In terms of cost, are you accounting for installing a charger at home? That tends to run around $1k, from what I've seen (probably heavily dependent on the area and the situation though).
I'd choose the M3 only because I personally don't believe Tesla is worth the cost at the moment and the infrastructure isn't where it needs to be (yet); plus there's a bunch of new EVs hitting the market that are looking enticing. And since it's an M car, resale won't be too crappy when you inevitably get an EV in a few years.

Do you lose anything from backing out of the Tesla order?
There are a lot of good points made here but it honestly seems like the Tesla excites you more.
What does the wife think?
The warranty would be on my mind. If you can score a good deal on that, I think it might be too difficult to pass up the M3.
You mentioned the Tesla offsetting the poor gas mileage in the rest of your fleet, but your commute is so short that for around town it wouldn't matter anyway.
What about longer trips or road trips? Would you take the Subaru or would the Tesla/BMW be the vehicle?
If you were to close your eyes and imagine on a warm summer day with the windows down, are you ripping through gears while hearing the twin turbos spool and exhaust pop? Or are you flooring the pedal and being blasted back into your seat with a huge grin on your face?

I'd lose the $100 order fee. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

For right now I'd agree, I'm worried how long that feeling would last.
What does the wife think?
She honestly likes the Tesla more but is supportive of either decision.

I'm working on this.

That was a joke. IDGAF about gas mileage given that I also own a lifted brick on 35's. I wouldn't be buying the Tesla for the environmental benefits, more so for the performance and features.
What about longer trips or road trips? Would you take the Subaru or would the Tesla/BMW be the vehicle?
Subaru/Jeep would be the long distance mode of transport if the kid was coming along. If it's just the wife and I for a weekend, it could be whatever.
If you were to close your eyes and imagine on a warm summer day with the windows down, are you ripping through gears while hearing the twin turbos spool and exhaust pop? Or are you flooring the pedal and being blasted back into your seat with a huge grin on your face?
Both! That's my problem and I'd like to avoid making an expensive mistake.

Only reason I'm considering it is because it's a special order "individual" azurite black metallic. Looks blue in the sunshine.

Gorgeous color, man...
trust me I get it. I was like hell to the NO and had never seen Moonlight Blue Metallic in person until we arrived in NC to pick up the S5.
I was SOOOO GLAD that in person it wasn't black even though it kinda photographs like it is.

It's black if it's not in the sun. It's black with blue/purple flake. Super pretty in person...unless it's inside or cloudy because then it just looks black. That said I'm sure it'll swirl and scratch like crazy. Inside is silverstone which will be interesting with the kiddo.
