rockstar143's VAG pounding S4 & S5 thread

normally on my way to work if I keep the mph down I get to about 24mpg...so far I've been getting 22.
Who knows...initially I didn't like the idea of mixing in 85 but I guess if it doesn't hurt anything it's fine.
I think the fuel in Florida is different...whenever I travel elsewhere I am able to get better gas mileage.
Probably the bath salts additive.

My Vagon sold for enough money to pay for the Odyssey and S4
Zero ragrets there.
And 20mpg is actually good for me...I have a lead food...I got the Volvo that was advertised as a 37 mpg car down to
like 25.
Caddy averaged 12.5 mpg for reference...13.5 if I was a good boy.
E85 burns hotter and faster so adding it actually lowers your efficiency...I'm testing to see how well I can do
while still enjoying the added power.

The Golf will do ~20mpg or worse in the city depending on how you drive it and 36mpg or better all highway in the summer. In the winter (because winter blend gas), it's ~3mpg worse on the highway.

there's no replacement for small displacement when it comes to good miles per gallon...
no matter what, you're filling 6 liters of space vs 3 vs 2...
pound for pound I guess for the amount of liters the bigger motor is actually more efficient if the numbers were extrapolated based on size.
thanks for the correction, Sam. I don't even know if what you said was any different than me but it sounded better the way you explained it.
I actually use this getupside app to get cash back on fuel fillups and the e85 station was like 3 miles from the good cash back premium gas station...
so I chanced adding the 3 gallons and then the additional 10 at the other station.

Well with FI engines, the displacement is less of a big thing. Power isn't free, all things the same you have to burn the same amount of gas to get a certain power output no matter what. Whether you add displacement to put more fuel in or add a turbo to cram more fuel into a smaller space, the amount of fuel burned is still the same. The advantage of FI motors is that when you're not on the boost, it burns way less fuel. On the boost, you get just as crappy of fuel economy out of a 300hp 2.0L turbo as you would out of a 300 hp 4.0L V8.

Higher grade fuel also seems to help. I finally used 94 and the car seems to have a nice further improvement on mileage.

E85 doesn't burn hotter or faster than gas, it just contains less energy content per unit volume but the benefit is that it's got a 105 octane rating so you can run more boost and advance the timing to get more power without getting engine knock. So, because you're both running more boost and the fuel has less energy content you burn way more of it and get way worse fuel economy. It does burn "cleaner" though which is good for the environment.

Are we talking about your 1.8T? My GTI could manage 34-35mpg highway, but the R can barely crack 30. In the winter I get ~25mpg highway. The difference between our cars could be gearing, but 6mpg is a pretty big difference, especially compared to the EPA ratings.

Yep, E85 contains less energy, but has a high octane rating. J isn't running any additional boost in his car though - for one, it's not tuned for it, and two, he hasn't swapped pulleys. E85 also burns "cooler", so it will lower combustion temps (good for engine and power, bad for mpg), which will pack more air molecules into the cylinder. Any gains in power and losses in mpg is strictly due to timing adjustments, less energy in the fuel, and his lead foot.

And yup, I can regularly get 35-36mpg on long highway jaunts. It surprised the hell out of me too. Just stick it on cruise at 70-75mph and let it go. In the winter time, I'm in the low 30's for longer trips. Maybe it's that extra gear.

Most likely. Cruising at 80 is ~3k rpm in 6th for me. Boost is constantly around -3 to +4psi. Part of the reason I want a larger turbo is to bump the threshold up a few hundred RPM to maintain vacuum at cruise.

I just want the best of both worlds...
decent fuel economy (in the 20's) AND 3 or 4 hunnid herspers.
Went to grab a slice with Pops and Z last night...she spotted a rainbow.
He is impressed with the car...he was like why would you want stick, this thing
is basically stick but also relaxed when you want.

Forgot to post this one of my cousin's ride too...
He's 10 years younger than me and has 2 brothers but he's the only one
that's really into cars. Over the years we've lowered his, put wheels on, put
intake and exhaust on. He tuned it with a stage 1...it's a real fun little driving
car.
Parked in front of him at my aunt's and thought it was a cool pic of some VAG.

Next time, for even better gas mileage, maybe don't turn on the launch mode, J?

sometimes the fastest way from A to B is over curbs and through trees. Ask @justnspace !
If it's any consolation, I curbed the shit out of my rear driver side wheel yesterday. I miscalculated
how far out the curb went. Rookie shit.

Crap. Not any consolation at all, dude. Sh*t...how bad is the damage? Mine is pretty bad...half the wheel will need refinishing/machining (or whatever the alloy repair shops do).
