Great meet! I bet that was fun! I wish I lived somewhere with more curvy roads.

Took this at my aunt's house yesterday

No kidding...I'm over there too, but there's no forum with the traffic and family feel like acurazine.

I think Acurazine will always be my forum "home." S2Ki is an awesome forum as well though...those Boston Mountain events that Andy (OG user here, Chopper) puts on are the best I've been on.

MX5 forum...lots of info, but not much community.

The Oregon group was fun!

We all stayed at the same hotel, drank craft beer together and played Cards Against Humanity

Cards against humanity...we bought it and played it twice this weekend. Had a ball! We already decided to order the expansion packs.

Yeah, I definitely dig S2KI...it's like you said, this is home...

This. I don't even own an Acura anymore, and this is still home. Like S2KI too, though. There's a fairly active Ohio group but I don't have time to hang with them offline. Work always gets in the way and the best drives are always on one of my call weekends.

I haven't met anyone on here. I'm shy almost met a few members.

But yeah this still has the best automotive and general discussion. I spend an insane amount of time on ft86club though. Went to a few meets, pretty fun. We play cards against humanity too!

So I've noticed in the mornings or after long periods of sitting idle, the push start will take 2 seperate pushes.

The first ones almost does half a turn over and the 2nd always starts as normal..

If the car is still warm or hasn't been sitting for several hours, it starts on the first try.
This is a new development in the last week or so.

Any history with these push buttons going bad? I'm gonna check my battery terminals in a bit to make sure they are secure. But other than that, I'm a little stumped lol

Sounds like the battery, to me...it would be the equivalent to turning the key and it being weak and not turning it right over and then having to go again and holding it until it starts. Also would jive with it being cold vs warm when the alternator just charged up the battery.

I notice that mine starts differently too, but mine is more of a sound, maybe the timing chain when it first turns on...sometimes it starts smoothly, sometimes it sounds like a loud vibration from an exhaust or something. Only when it first cranks.

Whoah...but was it planned?
I lost it going around a curve at 35mph, oversteer, car turned off and almost rolled back into the median. I'm keeping my crazy to only doing it from a standstill now.

25-35mph is a pretty comfortable drift speed for me - anything over that things start getting hairy because you'll most likely be in 2nd gear right as VTEC engages ... a sharp powerband = unpredictable if you're not ready.

I have a few spots where a 90° turn opens up into 3 lanes with plenty of room to get the ass end out - maybe I'll grab the GoPro and record a new one

Here's one a few from 3 months ago on my crappy AP1 tires .. notice how little revs it takes?

Here's another one in the rain ..

Unplanned but I am always prepared when driving this car.

I love Tyler T.

Also...I agree...I can do it, but I'm much more choosy WHEN I do it now...when I was younger I would have looked at every corner as an opportunity. My FAVORITE is looking at the people in the cars in the turning lane facing me as I go sideways, then correct and they just have this jaw open look on their face like...WTF

Speaking of prepared...drove home on the highway in heavy storm rain the other afternoon. It was brutal...the smooth parts of the highway I had to pay special attention and I stayed in 6th gear the whole time to ensure I was WAY far from vtec.

Thanks broseph - I think every S2K owner has the same grin :gheyhug:

While I agree it sounds good on camera, I feel there's work that needs to be done - exhaust drones like crazy from 3500-4500RPM (Basically the most used part of the powerband) and it drives me nuts.

Good excuse to put the top down though, totally drowns it out .

^^^Funny you say that...that soft top being up and nothing buffering that area and the sound beneath it does make it very loud and tinny and reverberates the sound sooooo effing well.

Every time I think that, I'm like...well you wouldn't love the car if it was smooth and soft and quiet. Hahaa...truth.

Hey dudes, looking for some advice here. So I drove a 2001 S2k over the weekend and it's going to end up costing me a lot of money...in the form of now I want an S2k...

Questions that I'm hoping you guys can help with:
1.) AP1 or AP2. I drove an AP1 and it has zero torque down low. You have to rev the nuts off of it to get it to really get going. I understand that this is part of the allure of the car and all but I want something with more down low torque. Will the AP2 and the 2.2L solve that for me?
2.) Any difference in driveability between AP1/AP2? I know there were some suspension changes and such through the years, curious as to if there is one that's better or worse than another and things to look out for.
3.) The sound system is atrocious in the AP1. Is the 2006+ sound system any better given the additional speakers? I plan on replacing the head unit anyway with something else for USB in to connect my phone.
4.) Mileage, less is better but how much is too much given that the car is well cared for? Or is this like any other Honda and as long as it's cared for it doesn't matter?
5.) Anything else to consider?

Thanks in advance!

1. yes AP2 has more torque down low. I'm so used to the lack of torque when starting out in my AP1 I don't even think about it. Of course, I have a CTS-V to make up for any lack of torque, so I personally don't care.
2. AP2 is less tail happy, but you should be OK from 2002 on up. I do not, and have never felt, my 2002 AP1 to be tail happy, and I drive it pretty assertively. I've driven both AP1 and AP2 and AP1 has a much more raw feeling to its handling. You really have to respect it. AP2 is more refined. Honestly, you can't go wrong either way
3. No
4. Mileage doesn't matter, these cars are like tanks as long as they are cared for. That said, my preference is always for the lowest mileage you can afford.
5. Look for signs of abuse/prior engine modding, i.e. anything else you would look for in a used car. I would absolutely not want a 2001 because of the plastic rear window, but that's just my preference (glass rear window 2002-up).

HTH!

^^^I agree wholeheartedly with Bob.

left is a converted AP1 and my AP2...
I've only ever driven mine, the torque...yeah, not very strong down low but gets going just fine for day to day chill driving and fun as heck when you kick it up to stay in vtec.

I too have only felt tail happy in my MY04 when I want it to be...

I added a Pioneer headunit and some door speakers in the panels behind the seat and a small spare tire subwoofer and I'm more than happy. I have some roll hoop brackets on the way to try out too...

Dunno if it's tire noise; my tires are not particularly worn. I've been doing some searching and found a possibility

One possibility is the bearings from the secondary shaft on the transmission.

Thread here:
http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/4096...whining-noise/

Anyone had this experience? Any other ideas? I'm planning on taking it to the dealer soon for them to take a look. I'd like to get this sorted before the driving season is too far underway.
Bringing this back. I figured the problem out on my own. I am a big dummy and I was reminded of rule #1 of owning an S2000: pay attention to your rear tires. Thankfully, I did not have to get into an accident to learn this.

As it turns out, the noise was my rear tires wearing out. With this particular tire, it appears they get noisy in their last 2-3k miles of life. The tread that looked passable when I took my S out of storage in April, was essentially bald last week. I found this out the hard way: a week ago, I took my S out in heavy rain and it was so unstable that I had to slow to 45 mph on the freeway. I looked at the tire tread when I arrived at my destination (safely) and the treads, especially at the center, had worn down, especially in the center, and the wear bars were almost completely exposed. The tires had 18k miles on them so not completely surprised. I do run my rears at 34-35 psi since I like firmness, so that's likely why mostly the center treads were worn (overinflation).

I therefore immediately purchased new rear tires, and immediately all untoward noise disappeared.

I post this as a reminder to all S2000 owners to check the tread of especially your rear tires on a regular basis. With this particular tire (Sumitomo HTRZ III), once I start hearing noise, it's time to replace even if there's tread left.
