Treat the S2000 more like an investment and keep it OEMish.
Prior to picking up the GP, I drove a couple of S2k's.... Almost joined the club actually. The ones overpriced were in great condition with low miles. Owners weren't budging from their asking prices.
The ones fairly priced were either in rough shape, rebuilt title, high miles, and or boosted with several parts to be replaced.
My search period was in 4 qtr (November) of 2014... not sure what the market is like now?
I agree with Phil, never get into something you can't get rid of relatively quickly.
I wouldn't say they are overpriced, that's the going rate for a low mileage, good condition S2000. Similarly, the cheaper ones are higher miles and the other issues you posted. It's the state of the market right now and prices are steadily going higher as more people crash theirs and/or rice them out.
It's funny, any car I've owned, when I went to change the cabin filter I always thought it was going to look like the horror pictures you see on the interwebz. Dark, cruddy, shit all mashed in between the filter, but no, when I pulled them out they were all relatively clean. Frankly I was kinda disappointed because then I felt like why the hell did I even waste money on a new filter, this one is perfectly fine.

Lets just say, my filter was what you'd see on the interwebz
