My 330i and sisters 325i lease is ending soon (3 payments left). I am going next week to the dealer to negotiate another package deal. Looking to finance a 328i sedan and 135i, what type of discount should I try for?

Hey guys, one of my friends is interested in the 330i, so I was wondering if there were any significant problems with them? Should he go for the 328i instead? Is that more reliable? What are the differences?
What transmission does the 330i have? Does it have a ZF auto like the 335i or is it the GM one in the 328i?
Any input on these two cars would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know there are really no mechanical differences in the 330i and the 328i. I don't think they added anything to the 328i when they brought it out and killed the 330i, so same engine, same transmission... someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Is there anything to look out for on the 330i? It seems there are a few that are CPO for under 25k which is a pretty good deal. There are also numerous 328is for low 20's but it's very hard to find one w/ the sports package which is a must.
Again thanks for any advice/feedback you can give. BTW if either car doesn't have IPOD integration, is there a kit you can buy for the 330/328i that'll give you integration, meaning you can control it through the cars audio system.

As far as problems, some early E90s had steering lock issues but those were taken care of for the most part. Some of the ones a little later had door lock issues, but those generally go bad early and are taken care of.

330s all have the same brake sizes regardless of package. But yes, they are bigger than the 328s.
Sport package is the same on both though.
Are you asking about the 328 or 325? I havent seen many 328s in the low 20s yet unless it had decent amount of mileage.
Ipod thing, not sure.

There are differences. The engines are different, a 330 makes about 260 hp where as a 328 makes 230hp. I think the brakes are different between the models, or the difference may come from the sport package, not entirely sure on that one. I know 16 inch wheels don't fit on a 330i with a sport package though so there is a difference in the brakes/suspension. Pretty sure transmissions are the same though, and not all 325s had GM transmissions.

I figured SeCsTaC was asking for info on reliability. AFAIK they are similar enough that there isn't much of a difference in terms of maintenance/reliability.
In terms of look/power/sound/brakes - the 330i has 25more hp, 12.8" front/12.6" rear brakes as opposed to 12.3/11.8 in the 328... The 330i's exhaust is slightly different.
I was wrong about the tranny; the 330i has a zf (not the same as the 335i) and the 328i has the gm tranny; but both have almost the same up and downshift times.

Thanks for all the info guys, i'll pass on the knowledge to my friend.
BTW Picus... you sure the ZF and GM trannys have the same shift speed? I always thought ZF made some of the baddest and quickest shifting slush boxes?

I haven't been in an auto 328i so I don't have personal experience with it. I searched on e90post.com and there is a thread about the two transmission, someone posted some specs (which they said were from BMW, but who knows really) that showed the relative shift times. The upshifts were the same, the downshifts on the zf were a little faster (like 1/10th of a second). I don't think either is slow. I've been in an auto 330i and I thought the auto was very smooth and pretty aggressive in DS mode. Compared to my auto 335i (which apparently has an entirely different zf tranny) I didn't notice a huge difference in upshifts. Downshifts were a little slower, but I don't think it'd bother me.

Btw, does the 330i rev match on down shifts like Infiniti?

We are going to need more info on the car, as you know a base 335i is 38K, with what options is the car spec'd? I believe that you can do better then 44k, I would think you could be able to do 44k OTD. I had a 3K discount on my 335 a year and a half ago when everything was going well for dealers and BMW.

44k doesn't sound good to me, even if it is a left over, it is a year old already, 09's have been out for a long time. Invoice on a 09 will prove to be a much cheaper car to own, not to mention having some subtle improvements in the car itself.

Hello, i didn't want to start a new thread since there is already a 3 series thread. my wife needs a new car and she is looking to get a 3 series, preferably an Xi. She has a budget of around 15K, but the only thing that i am finding is something around 01-04. and they usually have 70K-90K miles. i just wanted to hear what people think of cars like these.. i am kinda concerned getting her a car with that many miles due to costly repairs. Does anyone have any experience with those year cars or what to look out for.?? would you purchase a car with that many miles or should i convince her of something different. ?? your help would be greatly appreciated.

You negotiate down from the ED MSRP, which is an MSRP that is 5-10% lower than the normal MSRP depending on the car. On my 335i the ED MSRP was 7% lower than the regular MSRP, I got them down $1800 on top of that to cover shipping (which Canadians have to pay).

Should negotiate up from ED invoice since its pure profit for them. $500-1k over invoice is plenty since it doesnt even come out of their allocations. Granted you need to find a dealer who will do that but they are out there.
E90 M3: ED MSRP: $51,010; ED Wholesale: $46,930
E92 M3: ED MSRP: $53,800; ED Wholesale: $49,495
E93 M3: ED MSRP: $61,845; ED Wholesale: $56,895
Take that ED Wholesale price and add the options you want from this sheet.

Then add $1k for dealer profit and you have your total. Not including taxes or gas guzzler.

Sigh.
I might cancel or push back my M3 order. They want to only give me $27k for my 328i and thats too much of a hit. Especially since its actually a nice car and have no complaints with it. Hell only 5k miles on it!!
