General Car Talk Discussion Thread
Got to drive the current 5.0 for ~30 miles today. Sounds pretty good, looks pretty good, handling was pretty good. It was just missing "something" though. Still trying to figure out what it is. It was something the FRS I drove had, because the 5.0 just didn't thrill me as much. Both the FRS and 5.0 were 100% stock.
It's a fantastic facility. Kind of surreal since it's a dedicated F1 track. Most of the circuit is off limits for this event, but the paddock is a great place to see it from. Hard to imagine it's where multi million dollar race cars sit one weekend a year now.
I love it.. F1 is my annual retreat. I've been to the track for 8 events so far. If I had a car worthy of it, I'd do a track session. It's definitely not cheap.
If you want to see the track up close, there's at least one annual 5k there. Turn 1 is a total bitch.

I've been interested in going to Austin but from everything I've heard it's wayyyy more $$$$ than it ever used to be. I am hoping I will be able to afford it in the future. Indianapolis was such a convenience for us because we had a friend who lived in Chicago and his dad lived in Indy, so we would just trek down there and stay at his house. He lived pretty close to the track so we would wake up to the V10's - unforgettable.
we are not sure whether it's legit or if someone just had a motor out and dropped the LS in for a "shock and awe" pick. either way it's a mixture of
and
. There is also another theory that the GTR could have been stolen and it's engine removed and car abandoned, and they replaced it with a LS due to lower cost. If I hear anything else about it I will update.

They'll try to rape you on F1 weekend at COTA. For a decent seat at one of the bleachers, it's $350-375 for 3-days. Cool thing now is you can actually pick the seat you want for the upcoming season. For $100 I think you can get a GA pass and sit up at some cool turns too, but come Sunday, if you don't get there early you'll be SOL. You can also buy single day tickets after presale. Friday and Sat are pretty cheap if you just want the experience.
They charge $200 for a 3-day parking pass, fuck that, it's not worth it. A lot of property owners adjacent the track offer parking for the whole weekend for $40-50. This is better, because come Sunday, you might wait 2 hours just to get out of the COTA parking lot.
Food and beverages.. shiet. Bring a big ass water jug and cargo pants filled with food.
Second season was a lot better for fans than the first. More entertainment (Pitbull came for Sunday), live music throughout, more food trucks and options spread around the track which greatly reduced the lines. Even opened a biergarten with biermadens
Hotels are a lot better than the inaugural season. Hotels were booked out 6 months in advanced, people were holding signs at the airport renting out rooms in their house for $500/night. It has definitely calmed down, but hotel rooms will at least be $150 / night. I would book a flight / room / car early, just to secure a reasonable rate.

The hotel I'm staying at is offering me a discount if I want to stay that weekend, but the tickets aren't on sale yet & I'm not going to book the weekend without them in hand. Not even sure how much of a discount I actually get.

Neat read. Slicing at hairs at that level with each manufacturer trying to top the other...which is also really cool...competition begets more excellence. As of right now, this exclusive group also has to include the Ferrari Poopdick McFartington, Pagani Huayra, and Koenigsegg One:1...
And if you're some rich oil tycoon or billionaire, well...buy all 5.

Yeah, the discount might be bullshit. I will say that a nice hotel might be at least $250/night. Hyatt Regency in Lost Pines, east of track, is already booked. Any room not downtown is still low right now, < $100.
Seriously?

I wouldn't worry about getting tickets if you're interested. First season, you had to get them early. This past season, tickets were available up until raceday.

I wonder if company rates will be offered those weekends? Either way i find kayak to be just as cheap or cheaper than company rates. For my company at least, and another's rate code i know
Is he one of the guys usually in the automotive news area??? I dont go there really, to many trolls haha. That ssft... something. Is he still around?
Think of SSFTSX but with better English. And instead of riding Acura's pole, he slobs the Lexus knob. But he initially was all about Acura, until he got a Lexus, allegedly.
Lest we forget, SSFTSX once praised the qualities of Audi incessantly until he got a TSX. Or something.
Assuming that's bad lol. It was affordable, close to track, & one of the higher rated hotels.
I would have liked to stay downtown, but not for $200+ a night. The hotels I would have liked to stay at were also north of Downtown.

Omni is pricey.. so $280 isn't all that bad considering.. I'm sure it'll come close to doubling a month out. If you wanted to, I'm sure you could stay downtown for $150/nt if you book early.
