$45K for a used (potentially new) performance sedan...what would you look at?
#241
Just my 0.02$ but I would stay very, very far away from kia/hyundai due to poor craftsmenship. Yeah they come loaded and actually do a good job copying the nicer cars on the road.
The kia I owned was loaded, then I had to replace an alternator at 48k miles, sliding door motor at 49,500 miles and replaced a few other items that crapped out before I took a tremendous upside down to trade it off.
4 years later and I am finally rightside on the vehicle I traded it for.
The interior panels that were removed for fixing the problem resulted in every tab that was the actual panel broke off. 7 out of 9 broke. not the removable piece but the actually tab molded into panel.
I was furious.
Summary: Hyundai - Kia = stay far away.

Rattles and squeaks as found in the 2G and 3G TL are a pain in the ass to track down and shut up for good.
Also, Hyundais/Kias notoriously have had poor resale value in the past... not sure how it is now though. Still, who cares. Just LOOK at the R-Spec. Plus, the OP is likely going to keep it until the end of time so that don't matter so much

Actually it proves more what I am saying. The Genesis Coupe is just an ok sporty car, not really an athlete like a 335i coupe. Of course, there is the price issue. When fun-to-drive is really a priority (unlike the OP), I'd bet most people will choose an used 335i coupe over a brand new Genesis Coupe 3.8.

Thanks for the link to the video. I hadn't paid attention to the release of the R-Spec in Chicago. Now it's squarely on my viewscreen. If I were in the market and the CTS-V were not in the picture, I'd buy an R-Spec, change the wheels, and be done with it. Hell, the base V6 Genesis sedan with a 30+ crank hp bump seems like an even better deal. I could live with 333 hp....though now, having owned a V8 car, it'd be hard to live without the instant torque.
It's almost like Hyundai reads Acurazine. Hey Pure Adrenaline, are you feeding Hyundai product ideas or something?

My dads Genesis sedan has 55k now on it. Had it for 600 miles the last 2 days. Not a creak, rattle, or any thing loose. The only thing he has had to change on the car is oil and tires (and NSXNEXT read this next part) The tires Hyundai decided to put on the car are probably one of the worst tires out there (not sure if the R spec uses the same). DO NOT drive them in snow, and dont expect more than 20k miles tops out of them. They are one of the largest complaints by hyundai owners. My dad has a set of snow tires and Mich pilot sport a/s tires. Both are quieter and handle better than the stock tires did. Maybe you can negotiate different tires in the purchase?

Funny Kris, I can't find what the stock tires are on the R-Spec. They offer Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 Summer Tires as an option for $1400.

He drove the genesis, liked it, had fun, thats good enough for him.
Sure a 335i may be more fun in the twisties, but unless OP decides to go onto canyon roads or tracks often, he wont need a great handling car that has trade offs of luxurious features which he would want more often
He wants fun to drive on a commute, and you get that from raw power, and the genesis r-spec, i'm sure has that
i was on your side in the beginning dude, but you just went overboard with this fun-to-drive thing,

now back to the thread
OP, do you start making a deal when the car gets to the dealership or can you start haggling right now?

According to C&D they are Dunlop SP Sport tires (235/50-18).
I think you guys are being a little hard on Saintor. Hes not saying too much that is wrong. Besides the 335i comments.
Most reviews even say the Genesis isnt a sports sedan but more of a cruiser. V6 model gets compared to cars like the Avalon, ES350, and even the 300c. As we know just adding a v8 isnt going to make it any sportier.
Also theres nothing wrong with that. Theres a huge market for it. Not everyone is aggressive behind the wheel.
I do however think Hyundai listens and answered the lack of sportiness with this Rspec. Reviews complained about numb steering but it seems this Rspec has a totally different steering ratio as well. My guess, it will handle as well as the TL does but not better.
Kinda shocked at this comparison to be honest. Maybe giving the 300c a whirl wouldnt be a bad idea either.

My prediction:
2012 Genesis R-Spec
MSRP: $47,350
Out the door price: $44K (incl sales tax, tags, etc.)
And don't worry Jesal, I've never throw $40K at anything without doing my due diligence.
In the end, if I can't get a good deal on an R-Spec, it will be the 4.6L G. Still an amazing vehicle.

If it weren't for all the age-related issues I'm having with my TL, I would continue driving it. To me it's one of the only cars built 10+ years ago that still has modern styling.

Dude F that noise, get the NSX!! I'm sure you can strap rumble seats over the midship!
lol but in all seriousness, the gen will be a good choice, if that's what you want. It has the things you want so do it. I personally wouldn't buy anything without a stick (after having owned a 2G all this time and not enough balls to convert it )
the only thing I would have suggested to Hyundai would have been to create an upmarket brand. seriously, every Japanese company did it to legitimize their luxury offerings, if the koreans were smart they'd see how fickle Americans are (and apparently Koreans as well, Genesis is its own brand there) and they'd eat up a cheaper new luxury brand. We saw it with Acura, Infiniti, Lexus, we know it's proven to work.
Sadly, I've driven the Equuis, and while it is absolutely fantastic, it's going to go the way of the Phaeton, 70k for what?!
and 10 bucks says that if the Genesis was it's own brand here, all the detractors that simply don't like it cuz it's a Hyundai would have totally been egging you on to buy it. We're materialistic people, it's how we roll.
FWIW, I convinced my dad to buy a Phaeton back in the day. He's had S-classes, an A8 and a Quattroporte since, the Quattroporte is in the garage right now, but guess what's next to it? Yep, The Phaeton. Says he'll never get rid of it it's that good

The brand doesn't bother me. My prediction is <5 years from now, Hyundai will be one of the benchmarked companies in terms of quality, design innovation, etc. Look at their rise. Quality surveys have them in top quadrants.

It's the man's money, the man's choice.
If it were my money, my choice, it wouldn't be the Rspec. Hyundai has come a long way, but not $47K for a car of theirs.
What would I get? I have no idea.

I don't think there's a lot of people here who actually track their cars...it's just that he mentioned performance..and I just think lap time is the best objective measure of a car's performance...it gives you a good idea about a car's acceleration, braking, and handling. It's certainly better than me saying, "oh yea it handles really well and it feels really fast..and when I step on the brakes hard the car stops really quickly..."

They completely re-did the entire suspension and steering ratio in all of those models.
I took a base model 2011 v6 300 through an autocross course and came away amazed at how well it handled and how little roll there was.
Where as the last gen was a bit sloppy. Hell, even the stock suspension on my 2010 Challenger was a bit floaty and soft before I changed it. The new 2011 are MUCH tighter and firmer. Much more confidence and the tighter steering ratio makes me jealous.

Im just going with what the auto journalist have said. I have not driven it.
What would you think the genesis is comparable to from your experience behind the wheel?
Also I know i brought up the deprecation aspect of the car and someone mentioned who cares if they plan to own it for 10+ years. Well, what if the car gets totaled and insurance needs to pay out on its market value. You most likely going to get hosed. Just something to keep in mind.

I can see that being something to consider when you trade cars often or put cars up for sale every few years, but not so important otherwise. Can't go around choosing your car under the assumption that you will total in soon after purchase, unless that a common thread in your life (not implying you).

It appears that the 1st reviews of the R-Spec should be hitting the web in the next few days.
And according to Autoguide, it appears that the 4.6 may disappear from the US (due to cost for certification).
http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2...an-lineup.html
I'm thinking a detuned version of the 5.0 is more likely as a replacement.
Also, I wouldn't worry too much about depreciation on the Genesis sedan.
While not quite as good as say for Lexus, it holds up well against the Infiniti M.
Or that, based on our post-test trade-in value (courtesy of Kelley Blue Book), our Genesis has the lowest percentage of depreciation out of the last 15 cars we’ve tested with the exception of the Audi R8.

They have, however, compared it to the Lexus GS or Mercedes E Class.
Not as sporty as the 5 Series or Infiniti M, but not anywhere close to the Avalon.
the only thing I would have suggested to Hyundai would have been to create an upmarket brand. seriously, every Japanese company did it to legitimize their luxury offerings, if the koreans were smart they'd see how fickle Americans are (and apparently Koreans as well, Genesis is its own brand there) and they'd eat up a cheaper new luxury brand. That money is better spent on Hyundai expanding its sales in the BRIC markets, not to mention Hyundai developing new luxury models.
A smaller RWD/AWD sedan is in the works, but I wouldn't be surprised if 1 or 2 luxury CUVs are in the planning stages as well.
Hyundai would be better served if they spent the $$ on product development.
A new brand can come along later when they have a fuller lineup.

In fact a couple of reviewers liked the GenCoupe's steering better than BMW's (tho, I think they go a bit far on that one, except when talking about the 5 or 7 Series).

Im a magazine racer so anything i say does have a link associated to it.
Its pretty cool that the Genesis can be compared to cars like the Avalon but then on another review be compared to a Lexus GS.
