Nikon: Rumor Thread

Not an official announcement yet, but there is alot of reliable information floating around about it.

http://nikonrumors.com/2008/08/05/ni...-revealed.aspx

The replacement for the D80 will be called D90:

* Live View
* build in microphone
* HDMI and GPS connectors
* 12mp, ~4.5 fps
* video recording
* new lens 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR

For more info, just read the whole article @ bythom.com (from August 5th).

D90 + 18-105 = $1299?

http://nikonrumors.com/2008/08/11/ni...-order-it.aspx

that would be incredible.. I'd honestly be interested in it. I just want a smaller camera.

No but i read the whole freakin' photography page about 4 times. LOL. I knew that the D90 was coming out but everything I read didn't say exactly when. That's ok i'll prolly never use the D80 to half of it's potential.

Why the hell not? I think it'll be great, in fact I've been waiting for someone to do it. If it doesn't happen now, it will later. Wondering how they would implement it though. If they did it on the more "pro" lines of cameras yeah I would feel the same way as you.

I think they need to keep SLRs AS SLRs.

Or youre going to end up seeing on the pro models.

They can't do it well with p&s's, why start with DSLR's. I'm going back to film, if they do. A still camera is a still camera, a video camera is a video camera. I don't want video in my still camera, I want better sensors, better DR and more bits, before they start with this crap.

it's inevitable. but I don't see it ever happening to the more "serious" SLR's.

and I disagree, there are a few P&S's that take exemplary video, for their size.

The only P&S worth video is the Canon G9 and it's stuck at 1024. All the rest are BS, compared to a real video camera.

That's what I'm saying a video is for video and still for stills, I don't want a half nothing, the better tool for the right job.

I stopped carrying a video camera, it's SLR, I only take a video camera when I want to video.

i can see it being useful on occasion, but if you dont want it, then dont use it.

its not too hard to implement since there is live view already.

that's all I'm saying.

I am in line for the D90!!!!!!! would be nice if it has some ADR type thing(s) from the D300 too... but at that price, I kinda doubt it.

oh yeah high ISO performance ala D700/D3 would be nice too.. ok I need to go back to sleep.

Yes and no. Canon screwed the ergonomics of that thing up.

I think Live View is pretty stupid too, an SLR should be used as an SLR

I with everybody on the live view thing.

I honestly think it's dumb.

I've only had my D300 now for 3 weeks or so, and to be honest, I find it annoying. It takes like 3 extra click before the picture actually takes.

Call me picky, but it's annoying as (expletive)

I never use it.

I don't think mizouse's post was a joke.

Though that link I posted certainly was.

What, you don't think it will have Universal Vibration reduction?

Or have PhotoShop CS3 built in?

In an effort to avoid such distasteful events this time around, and ensure everybody can enjoy a D90, Nikon now supports the following storage formats...

* SD
* CF
* XD
* Memory Stick
* 3.5 inch floppy
* 5.25 inch floppy
* 8 inch floppy (in MB-D90b only)
* CD/DVD (in MB-D90b only)
* High-speed paper tape to maintain compatibility with Colossus
* Punch cards

Although VR built in would be interesting and a huge surprise.

I think Canon needs to come up with the goods and soon. And I agree that still cameras and video cameras should stay separate. The last thing I want on my SLR is vid capability.

Well if we all agree that vid should stay on vid camera and not still camera, what does Canon need to come up with.

Really, that was that only thing that could have a factor in this camera.

They need an answer to the D300, they need to get the 5D replacement out, and an answer to the D90, though there's not enough info on that yet. The XSi may be better than that already.

Canon never had an answer to the D80. The XTi was priced lower and the 30/40D higher. That won't change.

just like they won't really have an answer to the D300, on least on price.

I guess I'm hoping that will change with the success of the D300. We'll see.

I don't think there is much to worry about.

It's a see-saw is what it boils down to. Nikon is on the up side of it right now. Sooner or later Canon will respond pushing themselves back up and so on and so forth.

Curious, what exactly would you like to see from the 40D successor? While at the same time keeping the price point the same.

Or were you hoping the 40D moves up in price to compete more directly with the D300? Or an all new entry at that price from Canon?

The biggest thing would be to upgrade the LCD to D300 levels. The 40D's stinks (IMO) and takes away from the camera overall. The rest of the 40D is excellent, IMO, and I would prefer that Canon not increase the pixels anymore. I think they could do the LCD and keep the price close to where it is now. By most accounts, the new Nikon's also have superior high ISO performance, and I wouldn't turn that down. I'n not sure if that would push the price above current levels though.

As for wanting the 40D replacement to move up to the D300 price point, I'm kind of torn and I can see why Canon might not want to do that. I would strongly consider buying a Canon competitor to the D300 body, if only for the better sealing and high ISO performance. Maybe a new entry would be a good idea.

It's all moot anyway. I haven't even sniffed the full capabilites of the 40D anyway.

there are rumors that canon is going to announce a 50D at photokina.
the rumors suggest 14mp, 8fps and 11af points.
