Not necessarily. But I have a small personal project in the works and certain new features could prove helpful.

Especially if they upgrade to a D800 worth getting. I'd sell the D3, buy the "d800" and most likely walk away with a little cash to put towards the project in the form of some accessories or whatever.

I'm in for the "D8000" if it can get here in the next few months.

I decided not to hold out, I'm leaving the beginning of sept for 7 months and figured the d90 replacement wouldn't be out before then (or at least with enough time for me to get used to it before I travel with it)...so I bought a new D90 body for $750 off amazon. Hope I don't end up kicking myself.

so i guess nikon will be announcing something august 17-19th.

supposedly it will be 4 new lenses and a D3100

D3100 rumored specs
Rumors about a new entry level DSLR between the Nikon D3000 and the D5000 started few months ago. This new camera will not be called D4000 as previously expected, but Nikon D3100.

This is a break down of the main specs/features:

* continuous AF in video mode/live view (yes, that’s right – it seems that the continuous AF I mention earlier today will first be introduced in the upcoming Nikon D3100)
* new AF points configuration which should cover a very large portion of the viewfinder. Total of 11 or 12 AF points.
* 10 MP CMOS sensor
* HD video: 1080p/24 and 720p 30/24!
* AVCHD video codec
* In camera video editing capabilities
* 3fps (same as D3000)
* will be sold in a kit with the 18-55mm lens
* expected announcement in “few weeks”
* no swivel display
rumored lenses are
* Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.4G N – not sure about VR yet, but the Nano coating will be added to this lens (previous Nikon patent indicated VR on this lens).

* Nikkor 24-120 f/4 ED VR N – no surprise here either, except for the Nano coating (this lens was reported with 75% release probability back in February).

* Nikkor 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 ED VR – now this one is weird because it’s a… FX lens… yep, full frame! Previous rumors indicated a 28-300mm zoom, to compete directly with Canon, but it seems that Nikon decided to do this one differently (Nikon already has a 18-200mm lens for DX). Correct me if I am wrong, but I think this will be the first full frame 18-200mm lens in the world.

* Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 ED VR DX – this should be an upgrade of the current 55-200mm lens for DX format.

replacement D90 (D95/D7000/D8000) will arrive in the next few weeks. It's supposed to have a metal body, a better focus system, 14-16MP, 4-6 frames/sec, Full 1080p video, and better low light performance.

German magazine spills the beans about Nikon’s announcement next week
By [NR] admin | Published: August 13, 2010

In the September edition of the German photo magazine “Foto Digital”, which was sent to subscribers today, there is an article about the new Nikon D3100 and the four new lenses.

Nikon D3100 (updated):

* 14 MP CMOS Sensor (23.2 x 15.5 mm)
* Live View
* 3 inch Display
* 100 – 12800 ISO
* ISO setting manual or automatic
* 11 AF points
* full HD Video (1920 x 1080)
* price 650 €
* new EXPEED2 processor
* improved objects recognition for the AF control
* improved in-camera menu
* user can save picture profiles

And the 4 new lenses after the break:

* Nikkor AF-S DX 55-300/4,5-5,6 G ED VR (ca. 420 €)
* Nikkor AF-S 85/1,4 G with Nano coating (ca. 1650 €) – UPDATE: the new lens contains 10 lens elements in 9 groups (the old version has 9 elements in 8 groups)
* Nikkor AF-S 24-120/4 G ED VR with Nano coating (ca. 1220 €)
* Nikkor AF-S 28-300/3,5-5,6 G ED VR (ca. 1000 €) – UPDATE: it will contain 19 lens elements in 14 groups

Pictures coming soon. Everything is as previously expected. No big surprises, except that ISO range: 100-12800? Wow!
via nikon rumors.

Bodies, bodies, and more bodies.

If they're going to release bodies all the damn time, it'd be nice to see an occasional FF every now and then....

I got some info about the mystery switch on the Nikon D3100 – the body has two new controls:

* To the right of the mode dial is a sliding switch which arcs around it (similar to the Panasonic G1, GH1, G2) This selects drive modes between Single, Continuous, Self-timer and Quiet (which holds the mirror up until you let go of the shutter release after a shot).

* Above the multi-selector on the back and a bit further to the left towards the screen is a lever to activate live view, and inside the pivot point of the lever is a red button to start video recording.

And some more video details:

* Video options: 1080 24 fps, 720 30/25/24 fps, and 640×424 24 fps.

* The D3100 video is H.264, with 16 bit 24 KHz audio, in a .MOV container. The 24 fps is actually a proper 23.976 fps that video professionals expect.

* AVCHD video codec : the D3100 just stores a single .MOV file for each movie in the same directory as your still photos, so it is technically not AVCHD, but it uses the same technology.
.

im not a big fan of the 4 number classifications... I know they kinda ran out of numbers but I would have rather seen them come up with something else.. hell I would have rather seen them find a new naming system.

And trying to keep up with Canon's rebel line isn't insane? Everywhere but the US, it's a model number, here it's a name and different model number.

yeah, but thats other countries. do you keep track of other countries nomenclature? i sure as hell dont. I agree Canon's naming isn't exactly logical, but I think they can keep going with the lines for many more decades, without having any problem. 60D, 70D 80 90 100 110 whatever.. 3D 4D 6D 8D 9D 10D... see there you start having issue...

When dealing with camera forums that have people from all over the world, it's a pita sometimes.

Nikon has kept the same numbering system along the lines as you put forth for Canon. It's the entry line where both can't decided what to do.

I'd rather have a straight number than the one's Canon keep coming up for the Rebels.

D100, D200, D300...
D1, D2, D3...

Aside from the stupid rebel name in the US and kiss whatever name in japan, IMO canons naming is better thought out.

1D/1DS
5D
7D
10D-60D
300D-550D
1000D

D1-D3
D700
D100-300
D70-D90
D50-D60/D5000
D40/D3000/D3100

Is that all of them, and did I get it right??

Anyways.. Kind of wonder what they will do with the D7000

I'd like to hear that one as well. That's a step back in just about all directions, but it does take a nice image.
