Nikon: Rumor Thread
I have a D3000, and Not having "live view" and other features that D5000 has over it doesn't really bother me.
I'm not a professional, more of an avid amateur, so having good lenses are more important to me than a nice camera. (I used to money I saved from buying a D3000 over a D5000 to buy SB-600 External flash + nikkor 35mm f/1.8 AF-S prime lens)

Nikon D4 to support Light Peak/Thunderbolt?

I received a rumor that Nikon D4 will be the first DSLR to offer Light Peak connection (high speed optical cable interface offering 10 Gbit/s). The new MacBook Pro models that will be announced tomorrow are expected to have this technology (Apple calls it Thunderbolt).
I received this rumor few weeks ago and decided to post it today after I learned that the first computers with Light Peak are just around the corner. Intel is expecting Light Peak peripherals to become available in 2011:
“Light Peak components are expected to begin to become available to customers in late 2010, and Intel expects to see Light Peak in PCs and peripherals in 2011.”

Bryan Peterson posted this on his Facebook page, claiming to be from a reliable French “inside” friend:
“Two new Nikon’s-The D800, at 20MP, full frame, retail price of $2495.00 and Nikon DX-4, full frame at 19-20MP with a retail price of $5,000.00 and both will be announced by late September 2011!”
I am not sure what to think about this rumors – 19-20MP is a rather unusual size for a full frame sensor and the $5000 price tag of the D4 (I assume the DX-4 was a typo) means that it will be cheaper than the D3s (currently priced at $5200). I expect the new full frame DSLRs from Nikon to have a higher price tag than their predecessors.Read more on NikonRumors.com: http://nikonrumors.com/2011/07/08/an...#ixzz1TPn9UJnX

This is the email I received from a reader describing a recent Nikon event organized for major authorized dealers in a country I will not mention online in order not to get anyone in trouble:
They essentially explain what happened with Nikon since March 11th (earthquake, tsunami, Fukushima, etc.) and what major decisions have been taken since concerning the product plants situated in the area.
They told us that most of the machines have been moved to a new plant in Malaysia and most of the employees have been moved as well with some monetary compensation. Then, some photo slides of the Malaysian plant have been shown. The new facility is already producing cameras and lenses. Expect to see “Made in Malaysia” Nikon product very soon.
Now, as you can imagine, everybody asked for the D700 and D3 replacement schedule. Here is what the Nikon rep said: “Two new FX bodies will be announced by the end of August. Availability in Fall.” Even though the rep wasn’t explicit about which current cameras are going to be replaced, it was quite clear they were talking about “old body designs” (guess D700 and D3). Nevertheless, the two FX cameras will be aimed at different customers who have different needs: one camera for “expert” photographers, the other for “pro” photographers. Technical spec and form factors will be significantly different as well.
Could it be that the camera for the “expert” photographers is actually the previously rumored D400? In any case, the major announcement scheduled for the end of August seems to be on track and has not be delayed by the recent tragedy in Japan. All information so far points to the announcement of two new DSLR cameras. The Nikon Coolpix line will also be upgraded, probably somewhere in the middle of August. They told us that most of the machines have been moved to a new plant in Malaysia and most of the employees have been moved as well with some monetary compensation. There was a rumor that showed the mount and sensor.
Based off the pictures, people are speculating the sensor size to be slightly larger than 1/2.33" (which is a larger p&s size, the same iirc in a canon S95)

Picture of the mount and sensor of upcoming Nikon mirrorless camera named “X810″ leaked on the Chineses forum Xitek:
Brief translation (thanks B.): the new mirrorless demo machine is here, temperatly named X810. The user is not going to post pictures of the whole camera due to trade secret and he do not want to lost his job. but he did post a picture of the mount as requested by other users. As we can see it is not a F-mount and the senser size seems to be 1/2.3 or 2.5. many users seems to be disappointed with the small sensor it has.
The mount on the picture is similar to various, previously filed patentsfrom Nikon for a mirrorless camera:

Yeah I am waiting on the D400 I am going to be sad if there is no announcement at the same time about it. I have to much DX glass to switch to full frame even though I would love to do so.

Rumor: Nikon mirrorless camera will come with three lenses and 2.6x crop factor
By [NR] ADMIN | Published: MAY 5, 2011
Information about the Nikon mirrorless camera is so scattered, that when I receive anything from a reliable source, it is a big deal. The latest tip indicates that the sensor in the upcoming EVIL camera will have a 2.6x crop factor. Most of the previously filed patents also suggested a sensor with image diameter of 17 mm (diagonal) and a 2.5x crop factor – the difference between 2.5x and 2.6x is probably because of different rounding. If this turns out to be true, the Nikon mirrorless sensor will be smaller than the current m4/3rd format (diagonal: 21.6mm, 2x crop factor). On this diagram I added in yellow the approximate size of a 2.6x crop sensor:
According to the rumor, three new lenses will be introduced at the time of the mirrorless camera announcement: one wide pancake and two zooms. For reference, several mirrorless lens patents for different focal lengths were filed in the past. Note that Nikon may be obfuscating the designs and exact numbers in some of their patent applications.
There has been contradicting reports on whether the new Nikon mirrorless system will be targeted at professionals or not.

Sigh...in debates about listing my D3 for sale....but Nikon never seems to make announcements when rumored...been waiting to hear about a d700 replacement for over a year.
Then...the I LOVE the D3 in terms of ergonomics, size, etc....but a D800 would do everything I would need...
decisions.

Mostly people just start a thread asking for help. I suggest if you want Nikon, it would be the D5100 or a used D90.
Oh, it's good, but it's a little bare bones. If you grow into your camera, it could slow you down a little. But compare the features and see which feels best for you.
Also make sure you handle the camera before you buy, makes sure it's not too small. I have to use a large camera body because of the size of my hands.
