Canon has had the things I listed for a long time, just not in the more affordable bodies, and it took them way too long to update the AF on the 5D line. I know their ISO capability hasn't been as good as Nikon's because they've been too hung up on MP's, but it's not like it's been crap, either.

I don't think you'll find many who will argue that they've been trailing behind Nikon for a while now, but "stone age" is maybe a wee bit of an exaggeration.

With the huge gap between the 7D and 5DIII now...they really need to position something to fill it.

dpreview's review states the 5D2 is "ALMOST" as good as the D700/D3

Almost

Yeah, I have to agree here, Jeff. Where did your objectivity go?

Mizouse 03-02-2012 02:35 PM

Yea bigger sensor?

They're both full frame.. :squint:

Never said anything was crap ;)

In the tech world 2 years is an very long time, hence I say stone age.

The 7D will most likely get an update soon enough...unless Canon is listening to the uproar right now and takes it back to the drawing board.

Not when it comes to the 5D2, it was nothing more than a 5D, with the 20D's auto focus system, which was six years old at that time. With some software tweaks to look better. It was Canon's video camera hypebol.

There is a huge difference between the sensor in the 5D and the 5D2...perhaps Jeff meant bigger MP.

The huge "mark" huh huh huh of the 5D2 was the inclusion of 1080p video.

But...that said the sensor they switched in that body did have a big overall improvement in resolution and low light vs. 5D.

Okay, okay...as long as you're not calling it crap. ;)

And if you saw the state of my television and sound system, you'd know the true definition of stone age. Truly paleolithic.

I'll be very curious to see what they do for the 7D. For now, I think I need to send my entire kit to Toshio for some calibration and keep on shooting.

After reading some comparisons, I see what you are saying. BUT, you can get similar results with the 5D2, if you know what you are doing.

Silent Shutter mode, wedding shooters will like that

Mizouse 03-02-2012 04:25 PM

Yea it's quite a difference too in the videos...

My 40D had a very silent shutter, but it only worked in live view :tomato:

Wasn't the MkII around 3k when it was first released? This is my take as a 7D user who has been patiently waiting for the MKIII- Once you are used to the awesome AF system on the 7D, it would almost be a downgrade using something not as robust. I am 99% positive I'll be picking up a 5D MKIII. The MKIII is like what the 5D MKII should have been and then some. Is it worth the price? Maybe not, but as my first FF, I won't have a problem with putting my pre-order in.

srika 03-02-2012 06:41 PM

It'll be a phenomenal camera.

synth19 03-02-2012 06:47 PM

Glad I didn't get that 5D classic last month. haha

JS + XES 03-02-2012 06:52 PM

Hopefully the price of 5D MK2 will come down quite a bit! I want oneeeee

More then the current price? There has to be some sort of control that it doesn't drop THAT much more.

Yes.

So was the D700..and now the D800

I believe the 5D was also 3k, as was the 5D2

jupitersolo 03-02-2012 07:34 PM

5D was $3299

Sarlacc 03-02-2012 07:35 PM

My friend just posted on Facebook:

"Thank you Canon, you just bought me a D800"

And people bitch that Nikon is more expensive???

Mizouse 03-02-2012 07:47 PM

Wasn't the 5D the first prosumer full frame camera?

I mean the only other body was the 1DS series right?

The 5D2 IIRC supposed to drop in price by $300(?) on march 4th.

They still whine and say it, but every item Canon has introduced in the last 18 months has been more expensive. Just look at their new 24 and 28 2.8 IS's, $850 for a consumer prime.

No it was the Nikon F from 1959,

Mizouse 03-02-2012 09:07 PM

you know what i mean :annoyed:

is300eater 03-02-2012 09:35 PM

Hmmmm, doesn't sync @ 1/250th, that's kinda weak

einsatz 03-02-2012 10:35 PM

Quite a few 5DII bodies are showing up on the local CL boards... going price seems to be $1900 - people are apparently looking to upgrade.

its the same as the 5D2 and classic.

whats interesting is that the 20-60D/7D does, but the rebel is 1/200th..

of course the 1D4 goes up to 1/300th with a EX series speedlight..

:dunno:

Mizouse 03-03-2012 01:19 AM

and the 1D classic went up to 1/500th, but thats due to the CCD sensor.

srika 03-03-2012 01:26 AM

D70 does 1/500th also.

And, do some reading on High Speed Sync (HSS)..

Mizouse 03-03-2012 01:27 AM

yes I know about HSS...

you should know this.

srika 03-03-2012 01:28 AM

I only learned about it in the past couple months, when I tried studio lighting.

Mizouse 03-03-2012 01:30 AM

why would you even need to shoot that fast in a studio?

almost all the times ive shot in a studio ive been at 1/125th @ F8 @ ISO 100

srika 03-03-2012 01:33 AM

if you're using lighting outside in daylight - HSS lets you light up the subjects and have the background look dark.. it's a different effect but I know a number of people who use it.

Mizouse 03-03-2012 01:36 AM

when you said studio lights, i thought you were implying shooting in a studio with like a white BG etc.

just depends on how much of the ambient light you want to "kill".

in this photo, the back wall wasn't THAT dark... but it was shot @1/250 thus making the room look much darker.
http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6098/6...c6266f8f_b.jpg

If it had been @1/200, then it wouldn't be as dark. It's just a matter of what you're going for. But nice to be able to sync at a higher speed when you need it

i know what he means now. and i get it.

but i was assuming he meant a studio situation like this.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1D2N4124_1.jpg

where i would control how light or dark the BG is by the lights
