First, thanks a lot for putting together the videos! Reps for that. A couple of impressions: As far as the difference in shutter sound it was hard to tell from the video the difference between the 20 and 40D, but I'll take your word that the new camera is quieter. That'll be nice given how noisy the 20D is (one of my few beefs with the camera).

Also, the burst rate in the new camera, both for RAW and JPeg, is crazy! That's a nice upgrade as well, and will really help when shooting sports and the like. I often seemed to come up a little short in high speed sequences, like the one I hot to get my avatar.

Also, as far as I could gather at the end of the last vid, the focusing speed is much quicker with the new camera, and that too is very nice. The focusing can be a little hit and miss with the 20D, so I hope accuracy is improved as well with the 40D. I'd be very interested to hear IQ impressions between the two cameras as well, high ISO, dynamic range, etc.

Thanks again.

Looks like this might be a future purchase, the AF is faster and the fps, may make this a buy while waiting for 5D replacement.

reps for vids

Chod, do you have a battery grip for your 20D? If so, does it fit the 40D?

the 20D and 30D grip should work. the new one only added extra weather sealing and the AF-ON button.

That's not what I read over at FM, a guy was told (by Canon Customer Service) that the BG-E2 would not fit the 40D, the new BG-E2N would and the new BG-E2N wouldn't fit the 20D or 30D.

interesting, on page 103 of the manual it says that you can disable the flash firing of the internal or external flash, meaning if you have a speedlite you can disable the flash from firing if you want to use only the af-assist beam

i wonder if that only works for specific flash units, like 580ex only etc. or if it will work with my 430ex

and nice that it has a PC connection.

Here's something surprising:

I was swapping lenses/card between the 20d & 40D to do some 20d/40D conparison shots.
I hit 'review pictures' on the 20D, and was able to look at the 40D RAW files! The picture & white balance looked right - most of the exif information was gone though.

Si. I called Ace this morning, they said they're expecting them in this week, but they don't know when. Checked my email about 10 min. later, & got a shipping notification from Amazon. Only strange thing is that the est. delivery date is 9/4-9/24? I'm thinking they've gotten so much flak and so many cancellations for switching dates around, that they don't want to change my original estimate of 9/24??

All I know is it should be here Wednesday. Good thing, since it looks like I'll be sending the XT out for service...

What carrier did they ship it with? If it happens to be the USPS, be aware that it's not uncommon for their tracking system to show a status of "delivered" when the package reaches the closest distribution point. My copy of Photoshop showed a status of delivered for two business days before it actually arrived. To make it even more worry-inducing, the zip code it showed delivered to was totally different than any I had on file with Amazon. I'm guessing it was the zip code for the nearest distribution hub. I can't imagine going through the same thing with a new camera.

Yikes! That would be so stressful!

Fortunately, it's via UPS. I do have a tracking number (yay!) which shows the carrier has been notified to pick up the package. Looks like they mean it.

Congrats - I'm sure you'll be pretty happy with it.

I took some pics with it this weekend. No real complaints yet.

Some second impressions:
Despite reports, I don't feel the viewfinder is any larger than the 20D's. It is brighter though, which is quite nice.

Highlight tone mode disables ISO 100, which is documented. It also shuts off ISO 3200, which isn't a big deal but interesting to note. For some reason I think it's hilarious that it uses tiny zeros if highlight mode is on. I.e. it says ISO 8oo instead of ISO800. It's like it's squinting in the bright light.

The 'show blown highlights' doesn't do anything if only 1 color (say green) is blown out. It seems RGB all need to be blown out for it to blink. This is kind of bad.

I was hoping for a better zoom when looking at previous pictures on the LCD.
It still just uses the tiny embeded picture in the RAW file, so focused pictures still look blurry at maximum zoom. In fact, since the LCD is bigger with the same resolution, it looks even worse than it did on the 20D. I expected this, but it's still dissapointing.

It is nice having plenty of room for the RGB histogram though.

I'm hoping some sort of adobe update is released before I go on vacation - I was hoping to work on pictures on the plane ride home.

I went through this conversation about 5 times:
Friend: Hey, can I see your camera?
Me: Sure
Friend: How come I can't see the picture on the LCD?
Me: You can't. Oh wait........

@ the coversation... Sadly, I'm sure that's what will impress my friends/family the most!

I, too, am hoping Adobe puts something out very quickly. I don't want to keep my friend waiting for her wedding pics, but I don't want to use DPP either.

Thanks for the update...all in all, it sounds like it will be quite the upgrade from my XT, and well worth the money. Even if the viewfinder is the same as the 20D, I'm looking forward to the step up in that capacity from my XT.

I was wondering what Reichmann's comments were going to be about Canon's MLU stance not really changing.

For the sake of full disclosure, one can also set the Mirror Lock-Up custom function to My Menu, which makes it quite accessible. So, are my complaints now no longer valid? Maybe, but I like bitching about it in the same way that Canon stubbornly refuses to give it a dedicated button, or at least build it into self-timer mode. And I'll conrtinue to do so until they do.

I think I'm going to wait for my 5, hopefully as like last year, Canon starts their rebates again middle of next month. A 300mm f/4L is in my targets as well.

Nice! Hey, I'm thinking of heading back to Rollingwood Farm to test out the new body when it arrives. You mentioned being interested in shooting B&W's there...If I get permission, do you want to bring your film body?

Cool...I think I've still got it. My usual availability is Sun, Tues, or Wed. I think my early a.m.'s are free for Sun or Tues this upcoming week. Could do Wed with a little finagling. I've got to give the owner a call & clear it...she may require you to sign an injury waiver, just because of the horses on the property.

Oh, and your boss rocks!

If you happen to think of it, let us know how Scott Kelby is as a speaker. He seems like a pretty entertaining guy in the interviews and other video segments I've seen him in.
