Okay, so I took her for a little spin at a horse show today. First impressions...let's see.

It's definitely bigger, duh. For someone like me with smallish hands, it's actually a bit of a stretch to reach some of the commonly used buttons. Both dials, ISO, AF*DRIVE, & the thumb buttons are fine, but the metering selection/WB & LCD light, as well as the Power switch, require me to adjust my grip on the camera to reach. No biggie - it just gives me a slight feeling of being a child playing with a grown-up's toy. The good new about the size, is my 70-200 no longer looks oversized on it.

I love everything else. The AF is a massive improvement. Very fast, and very accurate! Not one photo was out of focus, and I was shooting moving horses using AI Servo the entire time. Big

Also, 6.5 fps is a beautiful, beautiful thing. Beautiful. Here is a sample of what you can get from a moving horse at 6.5....

(Oh yeah...ZERO PP...just resized & converted to jpeg. I know they're ugly. :P

You can imagine that a frame rate of less than half (XT = 3fps) would make it a bit more difficult to get the "money shot." I can see that I'll need to purchase more memory, however. You can fill up a card pdq this way.

I love that I don't have to push a button while turning a dial to adjust my aperture. The back wheel is dedicated to the aperture...very very easy.

You can't adjust those WB correctly without looking at the LCD anyway, so this is not a big deal. for WB, assuming your left hand is holding the weight of the camera, just roll your right hand towards the front of the camera, and you can reach it.

I never touch the power switch. I leave it 'on' and let the camera sleep itself.

The second dial has always been one of the biggest differences between the Rebels & The #0D cameras. It makes it a lot easier to change settings 'on the fly', and you'll appreciate it more and more over time.

oh yeah, apparently Bibble, Silkypix support 40D raw files now.
There's a rumor lightroom will be updated to support RAW on thursday, but we'll see.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. I've shot at the 6.5 fps - see samples above of the horse jumping. I was impressed!

What do you mean by any ISO, though?

WOW, right above my head, totally forgot you posted those. Any ISO, as maybe tried at Polo? I let loose on that 1DMkIII today, at 10 fps. Man that thing was humming.

No prob.

Wow, as much as the 6.5 fps made me feel all giddy inside, I can't imagine the 10! Sweet!

No, I haven't been back to any polo matches, unfortunately. I did get to use it at a wedding this evening & played with the ISO some. Unfortunately, I'm still not feeling very well after my encounter w/ a horse on Thurs, so I didn't shoot much. Moving around makes me queasy.

Next week is another wedding, though, so I'll get to play more then. I'm playing with the few I took on my hike right now.

An unexpected advantage of the frame rate = handheld HDRs I decided to wait for the custom L bracket for my tripod, so was forced to resort to handheld w/ AEB...I'll post a couple up when I finish. :P

I didn't know about Thursday, hope you feel better. I've been very lucky that I haven't had vertigo in about 7 years or so. After getting jumped, I would get it a lot when my neck muscles would lock up.

As for the 10 fps, listen to this .....http://the-digital-picture.com/Sound...0fps-Burst.mp3

Yeah, I'm really glad you haven't had to deal with it anymore! I still get it when I drive in the rain (windshield wipers) or accelerate/decelerate too quickly. Also, I tried riding again last month - felt fine after about 30 minutes, but then the next 10 days or so, my threshold was really low again & I felt generally like ass. Guess I'll try again in another few months Anyway, this isn't my vertigo - got kicked in the lower abdomen & my intestines are just pissed I guess...

I'm on a trip to switzerland right now, so i'm putting the thing through its paces. I've been experimenting with turning on bracketing/burst, and it seems to be a fun combo. It still has to be a fairly still picture through - 6.5 fps is fast, but not THAT fast. Sucks that I totally forgot to install photoshop on my laptop, just lightroom.

I wish there was an easier way to cancel/restart burst mode. I have Burst mode in my 'my menu' now. Also you can pop the flash to abort it, but that's annoying.

I actually already used live view twice today: Both to hold the camera as far away from my body as possible. Once to try to avoid shooting my shadow, and once above my head, shooting downwards for a better angle. It does have it's uses.
It's a bit scary trying to hit the 'Af-on' button while holding the camera 1 handed though.

So far, in my 'my menu' i've stuck:
Live view - easy way to turn it on/off
AEF - quick turn on/turn off bracketing
Quality - quick swap to small jpeg for shooting signs for picture labeling later

I haven't made up my mind if I'm turning HTP on or not.

Some other random notes:
- I fit 85 raws on my 1 gig card. That's a shade under 12 megs/pic. And it goes -fast- when you start bursting for '1 click HDR'. I started thinking that Canon must leave some 'dead space'. What would happen say, if you had 10 shots left on your card, then went on a huge burst run? Raw sizes vary, and it'd be a disaster if you filled the card before you were able to totally flush your buffer.

- Highlight Alert will only blink if all three channels are overexposed. If you are only overexposing red & green, for example, it won't blink. So I'd suggest using RGB histogram by default. This probably the only real gripe I've had with the camera so far. [Edit: that's gripe #2. Gripe #1 is that checking for sharpness for RAWs is totally useless as it uses only the tiny embedded jpeg, which when blown up, looks blurry. Bleh]

- Apparently the BP-514 battery is compatible with the 40D. I didn't even know about it till I read the manual.

Re: handheld HDRs - This kind of ties into a thought that was discussed in a previous thread (i can't remember which and don't know what to search on) - why can't there be a one-shot HDR? Bracketing just uses various exposure times to capture more/less light, right? Now with larger/faster buffers, why couldn't this be done "all at once". What I mean is, lets say you're planning on shooting at 1/60, 1/125 and 1/250. I would only be one 1/60 shutter actuation to capture all three shots looking something like this:

start 1/60 >> start 1/125 >> start 1/250 >> end 1/250 >> end 1/125 >> end 1/60.

Now the CCD would have to do the time splitting and record the images on the buffer all during the one shutter actuation. Previously my thought was to just continually record exposure information, but Dan Martin correctly pointed out that would be WAY too much information. But with specific and finite times wanted, this is at least theoretically posible. Thoughts?

Very true. It requires not only a still subject, but ample light. The shutter speed still has to be hand-holdable/fast enough to allow the 6.5 fps to maximize its utility.

I was kind of being silly, b/c I wouldn't really use this for a photo that was important, but it did in a pinch to record some shots from a day that was important to me.

Here are a couple of quick & dirty examples. It was a bit windy out, so the trees had some motion.

I'm not very happy with the tonality of the second...I need to do some more reading...

Anyway. Just a little side-benny.

Your biggest problem is that the sensor simply doesn't have a fast enough readout.

One of the biggest reasons why there was no Live view or Movie mode in DSLRS for a long time is that DSLRS use CMOS sensors, not CCD sensors. CCDs in Point & shots have extra transitors that allow you to read the data out faster, line by line. CMOS instead have larger pixels and higher ISO/image quality, but the image is read out as a whole.

I'm not sure how live view works, but I'll bet that when you actually take the picture, the shutter closes, the sensor goes into 'record' mode, then the shutter blinks open at 1/250 second (or whatever).

We have live view now - but the sensor heats up like crazy, and it's a huge power drain. I wonder how Olympus' cameras do in this regard - it's NMos, sort of a cmos variant.

While I'm posting there's a pretty insightful white paper on the 40D:
Quite candid (never seen a white paper say 'this feature is the same as the previous camera', but provides greater detail on the improvements.

Random trivia - so far on this trip the smallest CR2 file was 8852K.
The largest was a whopping 20,160K. Does this mean the 1Ds mark III can hit
40+ meg raw files? Gad.

How are the new 40D owners feeling about high ISO noise on this camera? Are you guys satisfied with it? Chod, how does it compare to your 20D?

From what I've heard, ISO noise has stayed constant across 20D/30D/40D.
Although technically that means ISO noise has improved since the latter are higher MP.

I've turned off high ISO noise reduction actually, which is a new option, and intend to use
different utilities to remove noise if necessary.

I haven't gotten around to post processing any pics yet, so I can't say more offhand.

I haven't had the opportunity to shoot very much at high ISO's. From what I can see so far, it's light years better than my XT, though. (I posted one at 1250 on the previous page.) I haven't tried cleaning any up yet, but it's more subtle noise, and I suspect will clean better than the XT's also. Honestly, that noise at 1250 is comparable to what I would get at 400 on the XT. I'm stoked.

Ya, they have these at Best Buy here now, and I was in there fondling one the other day. Not a huge leap feel wise from my 20D, of course, but that's a good thing because I'm really comfortable with that model.

After I set the burst rate to max and pulled the trigger, though, it was all I could do to resist busting out the Visa card. Yeah, I'm that easy. Camera whore. Lol!
